Austin isn't so alluring anymore, which is good and bad...

Quote:

The latest example: U.S. News & World Report's new list of the best cities to live in America ranks Austin No. 13. It's an enviable ranking for most, but here in Austin a city that ranked No. 5 last year, No. 3 in 2020 and No. 1 from 2017 to 2019 it's a bit of a blow, from a public relations perspective.

Now consider 2008, when the housing market roiled America. We were sitting pretty in Austin, with the median home price around $184,000. It's above $600,000 now. We've become one of those "other markets."

I can't believe that the median home price in Austin was around $184K back in 2008. How things have changed!

Housing prices is probably part of it, but you have to believe word is getting out that this city is run by absolute imbeciles.

I think a big part of the allure for many was how cheap the city was. We have some great things to do and used to have a good bit of character, but it's also blazing hot 5 months of the year and we don't really have much at all in the way of infrastructure compared to many cities.
It is a lot easier for people to trade some amenities or tolerate the heat when it's cheap to live here, but when it costs just as much or more than other cities, fewer and fewer people are willing to make those trade offs. I still enjoy Austin, but I can certainly see why many don't or wouldn't be enticed to move here now.

Austin has always been behind the 8 ball with regards to roads & traffic has sucked as long as I've been here. 25-30 years ago there were no flyovers at I-35/Ben White, Mopac/Ben White, I-35/183, etc. 183 was stoplights all the way to Cedar Park. It was a freaking beatdown then & it's a beatdown now.

I think this is by far the biggest factor. We're lucky and bought our house ~ 15 years ago so we can afford to stay here as long as we're working. But if you want to retire before 65 (when school taxes are frozen), is it really worth it to pay outrageous property taxes to stay here? My brother lives in Denver - his house is worth about 1/2 what ours is, and his property taxes are about 1/4 of ours. Yes, I know they have an income tax and some other high taxes (i.e. car registration fees), but those are much more within your control than a tax on your home.

Detroit is on this list. ***king Detroit. Yes I know they've been really trying the past decade but just because you put a Wendy's in hearne doesn't make it awesome. List is bs and suspiciously has a high number of Michigan cities on it.

I moved in 2018. I love this city and everything it has to offer but I think I'm in the accepting phase where I know I ain't ever going to be able to own a house here.

Just looked over the list.
It has San Francisco (Land of the cold summers, sky high rents, & public defecation) ranked ahead of Austin.
Maybe the reason is because you can brazenly steal up to $950.00 worth of stuff & it's only a misdemeanor?

Also ahead of Austin: Ann Arbor Michigan. What? Maybe the person making the list visited Austin & Ann Arbor in late July & made the call. They certainly didn't visit those cities in January.

FWIW, this is just an arbitrary list that gets published every year. They have to mix it up or people just ignore them. It's kind of like football recruiting rankings.
