I was thinking about this the other day and it really made me sad. Austin's "Keep Austin beautiful" city-wide litter avoidance campaign and attitude in the 1980s, when contrasted to the 180 degree attitude of "Trash out whatever you want, with no consequences", today. Austin used to be an amazing place to call home and people from here, were proud of it.
I don't know any who are proud, anymore. I now try to avoid the eyesore of a city as often as I can. It's not going to get better. I only see it getting worse. I cannot believe I am considering leaving the area in the next 5 years. That is hard for me to admit, as I have a lot of ancestry in the Northwest Austin, Round Rock, Cedar Park, Leander area going back to the early 1830s. But it is not something I want to be subjected to any longer.
The millions of imports from other states, with no major identity in the area, could care less what happens to Austin, or to Texas. That's the sad part to me. Our culture of hard work, self-sacrifice, integrity, friendliness, and decency, is being washed out.
I hope something changes. But if you look at who is repeatedly being voted into office in Austin, you can see where many of the problems stem from.
