Blacks Barbeque is stellar. I also like Herbert's Taco Hut. It's been there since I was in college 30+ years ago.

Hays City Store.

About a 30 minute drive but worth it.

Grins is Great! If you want BBQ, you just drive S of Austin (30 min.) or SE from SM (15 min.) to Lockhart, Texas.!!!! You have the Original Blacks BBQ just right off the Square, Smitty's (where the Original Kreuz building was-the sister got the building and she and her husband opened up on that location. Located off 183 across from Firestone). It is a real favorite and they have some side dishes. Kreuz off 183 under the overpass, and Chisholm Trail further south on 183. CT offers a lot of sides and they serve other dishes on certain days. Lockhart was named the BBQ Capital of Tx!!!

I second the vote for Hays County BBQ when in San Marcos. I stop every time I am passing through. I usually take some cold rings with me, and cook them a week or so later on my pit.

Same for Chisholm Trail in Lockhart. If they are closed, I may venture to Blacks or Smitty's, otherwise, keep rolling on.
