Its ok...I was not thinking after that it was the greatest thing I had ever eaten as far as Mexican food goes...It was good though...

Tex-Mex is judged by the cheese enchilada and crispy beef taco combo - so I would have to go with Maudie's. Jorge's isn't bad either. After that, go to east Austin.

FSM is an incredible restaurant, even though their head chef left / is in the process of leaving. It's definitely not Tex-Mex, it's very similar stuff to what Rick Bayless cooks on his show. I tend to save it for special events though, especially the Sunday buffet, which is extremely pricey.

I'll third that motion. Fonda isn't Texmex at all.

It isn't Tex Mex. It is way too expensive. Mexican food shouldn't cost that much. I have never seen duck on a menu in Merida or Guadalajara.

If you want TexMex, I will second Trudy's. Fonda is like someone else said earlier, Interior Mexican. It is okay, but I find it a bit over-priced for what you get.

Polvo's is another good Interior choice.

I agree that Fonda is generally overpriced. I do enjoy their Christmas brunch though. I think I ate about a hundred quail.

I would vote for Maudies (greate prices and good locations) and agree with the fact that Fonda San Miguel is not Tex-Mex.

I am not impressed with Maudies at all. there isn't anything there that would specifically bring me back to try again.

My favorite ( I know it is a chain) is Chuy's. I think the food is terrific and you definately get more for your money than Maudies.

I do miss Pappasitos in Houston though.

There is a Pappasito's on I-35, just to the north of 290.

I'm starting to think Fonda might not be Tex-Mex. Does anyone have an opinion on this?

Why do so many people recommend Trudy's? It isn't very good IMO.

I was thinking the same thing. And then I realized they were drunk when they were eating the food.

Trudy's fried avacado is good, nothing else. I just tried Angie's on East 7th today. It was pretty good. I'll have to go back and try more stuff on their menu.

Actually Hecubus, I forgot about the avocado plate. That is one of the impressive dishes they have. I do like the flaquities too... but again, I'm usually drunk and what drunk doesn't love queso?
