I have finally gotten around to organizing our garage, and the first thing on my list of "to do's" is to get rid of a bunch of old paint and stain cans that the previous owners left here.

Does anyone know the best way to dispose of old paint? Is there an environmental fee I'm going to have to pay?

your best bet is to wait until the Brazos valley does their hazmat disposal day.

if it is water based latex paint and there is a small/minimal amount in there
1. then you can let the paint dry(by keeping the lid off)
2. put cat litter in it
3. put saran wrap over the can.
4.hammer the lid back on
5. then double bag it
6. then dispose of it in your normal garbage.

anything oil based, or any chemicals like paint thinner, or paint remover need to be disposed of via hazmat.

The solution is to dilute with lots and lots of water!

College Station does have a hazardous waste collection twice a year. The next one is in October. http://www.cstx.gov/home/index.asp?page=917

I do not know about College Station, but some communities allow you to pour paint on plywood and dispose of it that way. Don't do this unless they allow it.
