well this thread has sure gone down a nice path...

anyway, back to the point (if there really is one). the simple truth is that in these pet stores you pay an outrageous amount of money for the priviledge of getting an animal that has just as much of a chance of being from a bad blood line as it is being the good line pure breed that they might claim. the logic that "they need to be adopted too" is just plain idiotic. so...you go out of your way to pay an insane amount of money for this dog that has been bred FOR THIS VERY REASON. like has already been brought up, this only perpetuates the problem. if no one buys, then no one breeds. simple as that. if no one breeds, then people might adopt from the shelter. and then the numbers of dead dogs goes down. but instead more dogs are euthenized than would otherwise. oh, and you get to spend a lot of money for that priviledge.

if you're going to spend a lot of money on a dog then do some research. go find a reputable breeder (as already mentioned), not from the puppy mills that "supply" pet stores, and look closely into the blood line. there are some terrible quality lines that are AKC registered out there.
in my opinion, mutts are better dogs than purebreds if only for the resessive genetic problems that purebreds entail. you will have less medical problems and probably a smarter dog as well.
but if you want to spend your extra cash, then go for it...

Deats99, people don't have to agree with me. However, people like Blair, me, and Alpha have a lot of experience with animals and pet trade. Our opinions have substance because they are backed by experience.

Digging up some idiotic thread about abortion bears no significance since many of my posts are trolls or dripping with sarcasm.

Judges are always right.

Aggies are always honest, good people.

Your post isn't weird in the least.

If your wife didn't have you by the balls, maybe you could think clearer. (cue laugh)

It's refreshing to see your posts, WoMD

did you say at one time that you work at the vet school?
Deats99
How long do you want to ignore this user?
No, really though, I am tired of people being rude because they are hiding behind a computer. I would not put up with being called "ignorant" in person, no suggestion of violence intended, so why would I here.
Would it be OK if you said "Hello" to me and I kicked you in the Bauls?
No, just like there is no need to refer to anyone as ignorant.

It's the internet

So you don't give a damn about what is said here and are full of sh*t.

There are certain things that I do care about being said, and they are few

Someone calling you ignorant isn't worth going on and on about

when did ignorant become an insult?

There are definitely subjects in which I will readily admit my ignorance (dog breeding, etc. being one of them).

Its just impossible to be a know-it-all in a every subject so you have to remain ignorant in some of them.

Anyway back to the topic at hand, my mom got a dog from the Puppy Store or whatever it is called. I know, I know, breed factory, animal abuse encouraging and all of that stuff, but she had been wanting a dog for months and my grandma was very sick in the hospital in College Station so we went to the mall just to look at puppies to make her feel better.

She fell in love with one and definitely overpaid, but it has been the best dog she could ask for. I can't think of anything that has made my mom happier than that little puppy (now a two year old dog).

So while I personally probably won't go out and buy a puppy from the pet store because there is a lot of merit in what the anti-pet shop people are saying, you can actually get good dogs from that store, but you will overpay.

you can get good dogs at the shelter too. i've spayed a couple real nice ones with great dispositions. however, there are two sides to the coin. you MUST get it checked out at a vet before settling it into your family (this goes for pet stores as well). there is nothing more disheartening than finding out that your new puppy has an illness of some sort. just note it for any new pet, especially if you have a few pets already.

I saw a "boston terrier" there for 450 bucks. It had a 5 inch tail...I would seriously be suspect of their dogs and said pedigrees.

Wow, I love how anytime there is an argument about animals, abortion gets brought into it and we like animals more than babies. blah blah blah. Get over it. Abortion does not have relevance in every conversation.

AD is not talking out of her a**. She knows what is going on because she spends a lot of time dealing with animals. I'm also quite sure that she would be that tough in real life. Actually I have seen it, I know.

By the way, there are tons of pure breeds in shelters and rescues across the country so you can look there as well. I have had several pure breeds as my fosters.

If I want to pay lots of money for a pet, it's my choice. I chose to buy from the puppy store because I fell in love with the puppy I saw. It's no different than someone buying a fur coat, there are those who think it is wrong, but the product is still going to be out there. I also purchased the 90 day warranty the store offered and I also have pet insurance for my puppies. I made the decision to get the puppies and I will keep them no matter what.

What about the students who get a pet while they are in school from the shelter or other places. You have alot of them who do not take the pet with them when they leave, so the pet goes right back to the shelter.

i have never met a student who rents a pet the way you claim (not saying it doesnt happen).
warranty? wow, it's like buying a car.

pet shops aim for the impulsive buyer. and it works. more power to em.

I am leery of people that sell dogs and cats who offer financing. It encourages those impulse buyers who do not have the money to support an animal. It is hard to find a vet clinic that offers financing or payment plans, particularly emergency clinics, and adopting an animal without being financially able to afford a medical emergency is irresponsible.
