Yes, the Texan was one of the finest eating places anywhere. And back in the 50's/60's when it was still a drive in made a great chicken honey butter basket.

The old Triangle drive-in where J. Cody's is today made a decent burger and was the first place in town to have ordering by speaker

dc77AG...are you referring to "The S1ut Hut"...known for the high school girls with hickies who worked as waitresses?

EDIT **Apparently, the editor doesn't appreciate the word "sl*t" (rhymes with "hut"**

Dead Solid Perfect was THE cheap, greasy hamburger joint on Northgate before The Cow Hop. It was located behind The S1ut Hut. I had not thought of DSP until this thread came up.

Restaurant choices were certainly limited from 1975-1979........ here are the ones I liked:

The Texan
Youngbloods
Monterey House (not much choice for Tex-Mex back then)-- El Chico was OK.
Tokyo Steakhouse (this place was great!)
Taco Villa (fast food)
Captain's Table (pretty good seafood)

Sparkey's had decent pizza, but we always went for the $1 pitchers of beer........ I met my wife at Sparkey's (28 years ago)........!

This sounds gross, but back in the '80s, people from all over town would come to the MSC cafeteria on Wednesdays for the Chicken Fried Steak. It was huge.

More blue hairs than Luby's.

Then the MSC food service went all corporate and it went to crap-people stopped coming. Probably the parking nazis had a role to play in this too.

I grew up here and this certainly brings back some memories!

Wehrman's Restaurant on hwy21 west .... near where 2818 would eventualy come through.

FWIW (which isn't much since it's gone), Wehrmann's wasn't on 21 or near 2818. It was on West 25th Street (now West William Joel Bryan Parkway), just past where Bryan Marine and the Boys Club are, except on the north side of the street. (Very close to the current location of Taqueria La Perla Tapatia.) Great place. Definitely old school. As a kid I loved their rice pudding.

Youngblood's: Yes, it was where Carney's is, and everyone in Bryan was there on Friday night. Anyone remember the photographs of the local countryside they put in the menus? They changed them every month.

Another place that was all the rage in the day was Ken Martin's Steak House. I'm talking about the original one, which was somewhere around the intersection of Texas Avenue and Avondale Drive (near the Beta Theta Pi house) and across the street from Sears (now the closed Albertson's).

Food was great. As a kid I remember being enthralled by the "wave machine" you had to pass as you stood in line. (Child of grace, do you remember it?)

Zarape was over on Chimney Hill (near where the Hilton is). It was way out in the sticks, and to get to it, you had to take a red gravel road with all these trees hanging over it. I remember being scared driving down that road as a kid.

WJB (West 25th) and Hwy 21 West merge at Callaway Lumber yard. I thought Wehrmann's was located just west of where they ran together. Oh well, it is long gone now and it was an old time eatery that would still be popular today if it had remained.

Anybody remember the Farmer's Market or The Grapevine? They were great for sandwiches, muffalettas, etc.

The Grapevine has re-opened...

How about Fort Shiloh and Julie's Place (later Bomaby bicycle)

My favorites in the 70s were Danver's on Harvey Road, Captain's Table in Bryan, and Fisherman's Wharf on Texas at SW Parkway in CS.

Did you know that in the '50s that the Fort Shiloh Steakhouse building was Shiloh Hall, a country dancehall not welcoming to Aggies.

The Grapevine closed again?? THat's a bummer -- my husband and I had our first date there so I was glad to see it re-open.

Sorry to hear The Grapevine closed again. When we were at A&M my wife got their recipe for sangria. During the summer we drink alot of it---even had some at our tailgate after the Tech game. The younger Ags who were at our party really liked it, too.

OFTEN! lol KMSH was actually in the middle of the block between the building that was FatBurger and the rental car place. 1700 Texas Avenue South to be exact. EMBLAZONED IN MY MEMORY. Thanks for thinking of it, EVA3.

BTW, I just met a chef who worked at Grapevine. He has joined the staff at Safari Grille. I'm holding out for twice baked potatoes! Just thought some of you might like to know.

**EVA3** Saw you at our old stomping grounds last Friday night.

I was too poor to eat out much during my college days, but the good places I remember are:

Cain Hall (I worked here and they kept me well fed).

DSP was pretty good.

Zarapes

There was this chinese restaurant up on College in Bryan, but I can't remember the name of that dive.

Even Whataburger was a treat back then

I remember when Ft Shiloh was a big deal - but I never went there.

had my 1st fast food experiences in Bryan from Zeider Zee(now Fatburger) Alfies Fish and Chips(Farmer's Market) and Burger Chef(Car dealership across from old Kroger on Texas Ave.). Later, enjoyed A&M Root Beer(now a Motel), Peppers(now Harvey Washanger), Danvers, Pepe's and Archies 39 cent hamburgers and Fort Shiloh....oh and JT McCord's.

Never went to Fish Richards, but I met the owners late wife and know the story behind the name of the restaurant.

There was a real nice steakhouse out east of campus either on 30 or one of the other eastbound routes. Has that been mentioned ? Anyone remember the name ? Swiss something, maybe ?? Again, dead brain cells...

Anybody remember Fontana's Restaurant, just south of Eastgate on Texas? Great Italian food, but I swear, to this day, the slowest service I've ever experienced.

Lots of great memories from this post.... Ken Martin still has a place in Bryan I believe, on E 29th....

yep. Once they took away all the parking around the MSC the townies stopped going. Dinner at the MSC Cafeteria used to be big thing.

Mom's was great! I heard that the healt dept. shut them down after the laws changed on serving family style. I used to love their pork chops, mashed potatoes and gravy - made what I am today, a fat, old white boy!

I also used to like the brisket burger at the Interurban - a big burger with slices of brisket, slaw and sauce - man that was good.

Or, for the occasional treat, a trip to Hill's Seafood off of 29th. I knew a guy who put himself through school waiting tables their on game days. Seriously.
