The Texan isn't there anymore, but I believe the Black Forest Inn is still open (been a few years since I've talked to anyone who went there, though.)

The Country Kitchen was a joint venture between my dad & uncle.

Man, I miss that place. I was so sad when it burned.

Mom's for sure-that place was awesome. I was 12 years old the first time we went to Mom's. My oldest brother had just started at A&M and Mom's was all the rage. If I remember correctly you paid about $4 for a complete home cooked meal. They(about 4 or 5 grandma types) kept bringing out the food as long as you were hungry. I still remember the rolls and mashed potatoes-yum!! Man I wish that place was still around-what a great "old" Aggie memory. Everytime we came in from Midland to visit my brother or to see a game Mom's was always on the list as a "must do" for the weekend!!

The Triangle (before Chicken Oil) and The Texan were car-hopping drive-ins in the 50s.

Mom's was located in Bryan on about 26th or 27th street a couple of blocks east of Texas Ave.

Arhopolus' Restaurant was the only place to eat at North Gate in the '50s. I don't think anyone in the place spoke English.

Second on Mom's. All you could eat for $1.00.

Tom's BBQ in the original cinder block shack; on paper. Best BBQ ever, anywhere.

Der Weinerschnitzel...still there.

The Texan...if I wanted to get lucky.

I used to like Momma's Pizza there were Cazodres is next to Layne's but that may be more 80's. Also the Flying Tomato where Fitz is now was pretty good.

How about the Cow Hop on Northgate? Cowpie and fries with a drink for under $3. I also fondly remember 3C BBQ.

In about 1977 or 78 I was having lunch at the old 3C at the old tin barn location in Bryan. Wes Gideon joined us. In conversation Wes mentioned he had played football for Trinity University in the mid-50s. I asked Wes if he remembered a game in 1957 between Trinity and U of Mississippi. (By chance I had attended that game.) Wes was shocked that he would ever run anyone that saw that game. Ole Miss that year was a MNC contender with about 120 guys on the traveling squad ... Trinity suited up maybe 25 including the trainers. Actually the score wasn't that bad ... 44-0 ... but he and I agreed it could well have been very very bad. Good times, good guy.

Someone mentioned Beatles Bar-B-Cue in downtown Bryan. The Beatles building was a tin shack attached to the north side of a building just west of the Brazos County Courthouse.

That building, before Beatles cleaned it up a bit and turned it into an eating establishment, had been the vehicle maintenance shop for Bryan Coca Cola Bottling Company.

I knew your dad and grandad of Country Kitchen fame ... both good fellows ... and served great meals.

And I probably saw you as a youngster hanging out around Little League parks when your dad coached. He was an excellent coach.

Oh, PS. Ate at Mom's all through HS...good, lots of food, but mostly from a can. But, there was a time you just put what you could afford in a jar and left. That stopped when guys started taking it out instead of putting it in.

Forgot about the Cow Hop. One summer school with little money, I ate there everyday at about two and made a big salad from the fixings bar. I believe a cow pie and fries was $1.35. Got me through the summer that year.

edit: just saw that this was the 70s instead of the 80s (I'm getting old)

La Taqueria (I think its long gone now, but house/building is still there... behind Delux Burger).

Also was a big fan of Archie's. Archie Burgers @ $0.39 each was SOP Sunday evenings... would buy 5 burgers and fries... then park my auto in the Fish lot... trek back to Law Hall and chow down... good times).

The bakery in Snook. Those ladies made the best kolaches and bread ANYWHERE! Used to drive over on Sunday and stock up for the week.

For what its worth. The McD across from Zach. was the highest volume McD in the US for a few years. You could not get in the place at lunch during the week. It was the first McD I ever set foot in. Thanks to the McDonald family who owned Princes Hamburgers in Houston, there were few if any McD in Houston in the 60's and early 70's we only had Jack-In The Box and Burger King. I went to Mcd for the first ime as a fish and hated it with a passion. How in the name of food could anybody call that crap food! I don't think I have been in one of those places more than 6 times in the 30 years since.

One of the side notes about MOMS was that you had to be careful what you gave the elderly lady at the door. She could not see worth a darn and would give you change for a $5 or a $10 even no matter what you gave her. GREAT food served family style. I believe it was there for 30 years or longer. My dad thought it was there right after the war!
