I have not seen much about this publicly, but there is currently a process underway to approve plans to expand/rebuild the runway at Easterwood, and the 30 day comment period goes through 9/25:

This is kind of a personal rant, but my property is nearby, and frankly I am pretty upset that several of the "alternatives" they proposed would have resulted in the destruction of my home, property, and neighborhood. It seems they ruled out those options, but even the two final proposals still move the runway about 50% closer to my house, and it still says they will have to "acquire" about 45 acres from *someone*. It's just a crappy feeling to be told out of nowhere "We thought about taking your home but decided against it" and even if it's not me, I don't like knowing that someone will be losing their land to the university for this purpose.

Hey those 3 flights a day have to land somewhere!

I bet in 5-10 years we'll have an international airport.
I hope I did not offend anybody with this post. If I did, please come see me at my address in my profile so we can talk.

What a weird thing to be upset about. Someone had an idea and realized it was a bad one? Also nobody is "losing" their land if they voluntarily sell it at a price that is agreeable to them.

Elon needs it for his larger aircraft.

I don't disagree that it's weird, but it's a hard thing not to take personally. RE: "losing" their land, is this type of land acquisition not going to be via eminent domain? I am not an expert but if that's the case it seems more like they're being voluntold.
EFR

Of course they are being voluntold. On the flip side of that eminent domain proceedings are after negotiations have been attempted, and it is almost always easier/better to end up paying over market (sometimes significantly so) than let a single landowner tie up a project like this in court.

I'd rather see Easterwood converted to a train depot for rail travel to IAH, Hobby and Bernstein.

Bernstein? You mean Bergstrom?

So instead of them stealing a little bit of land to extend the runway, you'd rather them take the land of a ton of different people to make a railroad that won't get used?

If we don't expand, Elon will build his own. I don't care either way. I don't want people's land taken from them but it's getting to the point where it's inevitable in BCS and Abilene.

Yeah he'll probably have to. I'd like a real airport but it's not that big of a deal to me.

Wishful thinking. With IAH so close to Terrafab (69 miles) and Easterwood 25.6 miles from Terrafab, I can see no reason for us to have an international airport. Drive time per google maps would be 68 minutes vs 37 minutes. I don't think that's a meaningful enough time savings to drive change. And I don't see any other reason for us to have an international airport besides Terrafab.

If it's just for Terafab sure. If the BCS area grows in the same fashion Austin did, then we'd get an airport. That's a big if. I think SA and Austin's airports are closer to each other than us and IAH. Austin didn't expand until after Dell took off.

If you read both links in the original post you will understand it's not about Terafab. Runway end of life. Can we afford to have no commercial or high end private service for several yrs? If the answer is no, then the 8k ft parallel runway is the answer.

Easterwood should expand. I'm curious why both of their final options close the crosswind runway.

IMO, we should move Easterwood to the runways at RELLIS.

Easterwood does not have enough private hangar space available. Winning the lottery my have the same odds as getting a spot before you are too old to fly your own plane.

I could see Elon getting a spot with his own hangar and having room for a jet and helicopter to take him to/from TerraFab. I am sure there would be a nice donation to A&M.

Jokes aside, Easterwood needs more private hangar space.

When they opened the Bush Library, they brought the records and such in on a C-5. How much bigger aircraft do you want?

They are building an airport as part of Starbase Louisiana. I can virtually guarantee there will be one at Terrafab.

Only question I have is:
Was it your land before or after the airport was built?

If before, then I see potential for a legitimate complaint.
If after, then you chose to be by an airport and they sometimes need to expand or grow.

With the increase in tech and business, even though it is I only 1-1.5 hours from IAH and AUS, money is time, and if people can get flights to where they need to be i stead of having flights and 1+ hour drives, that is often what business people will take.
So will alumni from out of state.

The argument that BCS is already served by other cities airports denies potential for growth.
Look at the LA or SanFran area..... or even Seattle.

Yes there is a major (or 2) airports right around, but if I'm going to Redlands, or elsewhere in the Imland Empire, I'm flying to Ontario.

And an 8k foot runway isn't that large, so you wont be getting long haul flights, but it can open up to more options than just IAH or DFW.

And the EOL point is key on this.
If the single runway goes down, even the few flights now will stop for well over a year. Once that happens its doubtful any airline will return.
Thus potential area business growth will decline.

Just my 3 cents as a frequent business flyer.

Who is old enough to remember when they had to take the fence down at the end of the runway for certain football team charters because the calculations when the plane took off said the landing gear might hit the fence?

It's just a house, don't take it personal.

Also, you probably got a good deal on the property because of it's proximity to the airport. This is one of the reasons.

If we just had a dam flight to ATL……

We are still not a real SEC town without a DL flight to ATL and a Waffle House. Manor got one and Hillsboro got one B4 us.

Or he could pull out his checkbook from the Bank of I Have FU Money and build his own runway and not waste any time (which is, especially for him, the most valuable asset) commuting from IAH, AUS, DFW, Love, or CLL.

Hooks Airport in Spring is only an hour from Terrfab and all 4 of those can land and take off from there.
