FYI
Water restrictions went into effect Monday south of CS. We are even last numbers address, so Tuesday & Friday watering days. Odd numbers are Monday & Thursday.

I have no idea if or how this is enforced.

If there is no set water time window on your days set your irrigation for 2 start times on those days once in morning and second late pm.

I'm not really a fan of us all watering our yards just to have 90% of it evaporate away. That's going to contribute heavily to real future water shortages. As populations in Texas increase, something will have to give.

But, for the time being, you'd think the local water companies could make a plan that would handle the needs of summer. It comes every year. Nothing new.

After the long hot summer a few years ago I reseeded with common Bermuda. Kept the zoysia in shaded areas.

Went to a two day schedule back in July. Yard is keeping up fairly well, still have 'hot spots' and brown grass in some areas. Likely will reseed in common next year in some of the areas that don't recover.

My front yard was re-sodded with St Augustine palmetto which is super tough and handles drought well. Back yard is regular St Augustine and looks like crap.

Wellborn SUD is likely the most inept water provider with which I have ever dealt. Infrastructure problems. Horrible planning. Overcharges. And apparently nothing can be done and nothing changes.

Judging by my neighbor's watering habits that don't change during restrictions, it's not enforced at all. She waters every afternoon, enough that it runs off into the street.

A huge part of the problem is the stinking builders using select fill to level yards rather than actual top soil. Look at the neighborhoods built in the 80s and earlier. Their st Augustine lives with little to no watering. Dig a hole in the yard and all you find is good brown soil. Dig a hole in a newer yard and its sandy red clay.

Soil health is an important part of turf health. I notice when I do irrigation checkups that St. Augustine in the older neighborhoods does just fine.

To clarify - Wellborn SUD has enacted Stage 2 of their Drought Contingency Plan and Wickson has enacted Stage 1, but the TL; DR is 2 days a week based on address, within certain hours.

Wickson's schedule allows for sixteen hours a week and Wellborn's allows for twenty hours. That's a lot of time to water, but if your irrigation system is inefficient and doesn't have good coverage you can water all day every day and still not have a green lawn.

Ideally, everyone would follow a two day per week irrigation schedule, just picking the days that work for them. Deep, infrequent irrigation promotes deep root growth. If you irrigate daily for a short time, turf gets fried in weather like this.

Sure! Basically, getting the soil wet down to a depth of about six inches. In heavy clay soils like we have here, that's done using a "cycle and soak" approach.

Instead of running a rotor zone for thirty minutes, you split that into three or more intervals.

Here's how to program that:

On your controller, reduce the run time for the thirty-minute zone down to ten minutes. Then using the Start Time function on your controller, you're going to add two more start times. For example, instead of one start time at 3:00 AM, you could have one at 3:00 AM, one at 4:00 AM, and a third at 5:00 AM. This allows the water to soak in between cycles.

Some controllers do this automatically. I have a Rachio and it automatically adjusts run times based on sprinkler type, sun exposure, and slope.

Unfortunately, the supply line inadequacy for many homes on both suppliers systems limits the systems to a small number of heads per zone. So with a relatively large yard, one can't do deep watering of all their zones within the 16 hr limit.

Fairly decent? Or rather at least better then the previous grass. It still needs at least filtered sun I think. I had the tree canopy opened up in my front yard which helped a lot.

16 hours of watering time isn't enough? No wonder there's a water shortage every summer.

I've got a fairly large yard and it's mixed grasses currently. As my St. Augustine dies off, I'm letting my Bermuda take it over. The St. Augustine takes too much water and tends to get diseased more often, especially in late summer when it gets hot. My Bermuda can turn brown and go dormant and as soon as it starts raining again, it greens back up and looks great. I water some but with the way the grass bounces back after a drought period, it's not worth the money to me to keep it green. I go to church with a couple who lives out in King Oaks and their water bill in the summer is around $1,000/month in the summer. Never been to their house but I can only imagine the jungle they must be growing to need that much water.

If they have a half acre irrigated (front and back yard) it doesn't take much. They charge out the wazoo once you pass a pretty low total in the summer. So your $1000 doesn't go far.

It ate up the filters on my RO on my kitchen faucet in less than 6 months. A system that should have lasted at a minimum for a year could barely do half that.

I'm thinking of a whole house one, but their crappy water would probably kill it too far earlier than advertised.

I've lived in College Station, Bryan and now have Wickson water. I can't say any of them have a great taste. They all taste like a swimming pool. Guess I was spoiled growing up as we had well water that had zero taste.

That being said, I've been running a RO system on my Wickson Water for the past 5 years. I change my charcoal filters every 6 months and the other 2 filters yearly and my system has run great. reminds me, i need to change all my filters pretty soon.

I water at 3-4 AM to decrease evaporation and so my husky won't go run through the sprinklers and make a mess in the house. Props to them if they are patrolling at that time.

I'm curious as to why people aren't following the irrigation schedule. Perhaps they don't know, or don't care, or don't think their actions will make a difference. College Station and Bryan aren't on a defined irrigation schedule as of now, but water demand is very high with those systems as well.

With the exception of a small part of Wellborn's system, all the water systems around here are groundwater based. It's not like a reservoir drying up - the water is there, and other than extreme periods like this, they keep up fairly well. But there is great potential for savings with more efficient irrigation.
