Chilliest cancelled for mud? Only reason I'm still walking this earth is because we had couches to burn so we didn't freeze to death in 03-05ish.

If the county was the driving force behind the cancellation, the government has overstepped its bounds.

BCSO showed us that no one gets away with joking about the Snook cemetery and gets away with it.

Sorry folks, Chilifest is closed. The sheriff's deputy out front should have told you.

I don't think the attendees (aka Generation) were the ones who cancelled it.

This was the subject of a lively convo with friends at BWD today, several of them Chilifest veterans.

Unrelated I just realized how long it's been since I had a really, really good bowl of chili and now I'm mildly sad.

I posted this on the other thread also. Muddy road and parking area could have been fixed Saturday morning with loads of stabilized sand and a tractor. I assumed they would have this set up as a contingency plan with the rain forecasted all week. I'm not familiar with the local politicians out there but I would assume the county commissioners/ county judge and road department would know this.

You do know that field is privately owned by a cattle rancher and chilifest rents it, right ? Maybe he wouldn't allow them to lay gravel, road base, or sand in his pasture that he runs cattle in. Maybe the county judge wouldn't allow the production to go on. Or maybe they just made a good decision and canceled the event because of true safety concerns. Either way, if we weren't going to be the ones responsible for people's safety at the event (and most likely the one sued if something had gone wrong) then the Monday morning quarterbacking is getting a little wild…

Maybe, maybe, maybe. I can't answer them.

Or maybe he would have appreciated having a stabilized road base. I've done the same on some of my dirt ranch roads which lead to irrigation wells I need to drive to even after a rain. It's a long term road improvement and much cheaper than rocking the road.

One truck once in a while is not the same as hundreds of trucks/cars all at once. Maybe the rancher wanted a field he could use the other 364 days and he/she could not stop the event due to a contractual agreement.

They aren't driving on pre-existing roads leading to oil pads. It's a cow pasture. This isn't the first year for rain. I'm sure in the 25+ years chilifest has been doing this, if the rancher wanted roads put in for inclement weather driving he could've negotiated it and the roads would exist. Apparently, he didn't want roads, hence them not currently existing.

The people complaining about it being shut down were obviously not out there. It needed to happen. Whether a bunch of Old Ags who can't get over the "in my day we walked through the mud" mentality like it or not, in the litigious society we currently live in, the same people complaining it got shut down would be the same people calling for Chilifest to be sued had something bad happened.

I think your last paragraph hit the nail on the head. Is this generation soft, maybe. But you can bet that if someone got hurt and couldn't get EMS or if there was a wreck on 60 caused by mud, Chilifest would be sued into oblivion.

I drove Uber some this weekend, and I can tell you all the frat bros were absolutely pissed it got canceled. They didn't want it to be canceled at all. Also, I didn't think it should be canceled until I saw the photo of the St. Joe medical tent. That is what sold me that it was probably a good call.

Yes this photo was crazy. They can't be safe for anyone. And apparently lot of the mud was being tracked in the main road (60?) and they had to shut it down to clean it off.

Also there was so much mud on 60 that the Snook VFD was out there until 3am spraying and clearing it off. If they had to do that, then there was legit safety concern with the amount of mud in and around the area.

It is pretty crazy how people will fly off the handle without knowing all of the details. And if they did know all of the details and said it still needed to go on, then I'm not sure what to think.

In regards to the frats being pissed, I'm sure they were. They are 18-20 year olds who had one, maybe two things on their mind and only one night of it got to happen. Yes, a lot of work went into what all they built and put together, but there was always the chance that something could come along and cancel the event. Common sense

(Edit: JMac didn't see your response until I posted)
