I was at a popular university drive restaurant on its grand opening in 2000, bartenders wage 2 bucks an hour plus tips. last week stopped by and the bartender said he is making 2 bucks plus tips

There's only two restaurants that fit that description and I think I know which one you're referring to (even if it's a 50% chance I'm wrong). Why are you so cagey about naming it?

really not
it is Cheddars and they have a great business model from the first owners to the current owners Darden group, and it is my understanding they are the number 1 cheddars in the chain

just trying to point out you have college educated folks that take care of you vs many of their locations that only you can imagine the level of help

I mean, minimum wage hasn't gone up in Texas (or at least only like 0.25). But I bet tips are better now than they were 20 years ago. (I know i tip more now than I did 20 years ago- prices have gone up)

Should I tip them more based on their level of education? Maybe ask for a transcript?

The minimum wage in Texas for tipped employees has been $2.13/hr since 2009. But employers are supposed to ensure their pay is at least $7.25/hr. Which is still not a livable wage, no matter your level of education. At least with the increased cost of everything, tips are probably better than what they were 26 years ago (when Cheddars opened).

This is such a transitional market where bartenders/servers often come and go. If I frequent a place with a regular server that provides great service, who actually considers this place their home, I tip A LOT. If it's you run-of-the-mill college student who provides good service, 20+% is normal for me.

Tips are based on price of the item. Assuming the same percentage in tips, your average bartender is going to getting far more hour than 25 years ago unless Cheddar's has never increased prices on their drinks.

Bartending and waiting tables is not supposed to be a livable income career. It's supposed to provide part time employment to those who want it.

It was in the 1960's. Better than average in some cases.

It really depends on the business model, the individual, and the time of year/events. In my venues servers can make $15/hr in tips on a slow lunch to bartenders making north of $1,000 on a gameday double shift at The Backyard. All of the mentioned folks at $2.13/hr. Most of the time, it's pretty common for servers to make $35-$55/hr. and bartenders at the busier spots to make $75/hr.

It's important for consumers to keep in mind that if that $2.13/hr is mandated to increase, that the increase will almost assuredly have to be passed on to the customer.

Techno Ag is of course correct in that most cases these jobs are part time or transitional, but there are outliers. In the large metros there are professional servers and bartenders, and the customers get professional service in exchange.

What I try to teach my staff is to never count it by the shift, but to always look at what you made by the end of the week. By the shift is like watching your stocks by the minute, counterproductive to the big picture my view. These staff would be hard pressed to have a more convenient and lucrative way to make more $ by the hour during their time in school.

When I started pizza cooking at Cafe Eccell in august of 1990, I made $4.25/hr. I never went the tipped route, but I also intended to make it my career to become an entrepreneur. I wasn't thinking that I was waiting there for a "real job' after school. That was my real job, I just needed to focus on learning and moving up.

Very well said! I waited tables and bartended during college and it was a great way to make good money, for college, in a shorter period of time. I always said that if I got in a bind financially, I would go and work part time as a waiter or bartender. You're correct that in larger cities that there are professional waiters and bartenders that make damn good money.

The term "Minimum Wage" needs to be officially changed to "Beginning Wage" or "Starter Wage"

I think minimum wage went away ever since Covid. Target starts at $15 no experience. Chic fila I think is $14. Believe McDonald's is 14-15 as well. When I was 16 there was a lot of labor supply for minimum wage jobs that paid $4.25.

Yes and you could buy, a home, and a car on one income and feed your family. [/Gen Z]
