Newly released FBI crime data ranks the small town of Calvert as the most burglarized city in the state, but city officials and long-time residents insist it doesn't paint an accurate picture of their quiet community.
A SafeWise analysis of 2023 data identified Calvert as the most burglarized city in Texas, a finding derived from examining FBI burglary numbers in conjunction with population size.
With a population of just 969 residents and a total of 16 burglaries in 2023, it's this per-capita figure that propelled Calvert to the top of the list.

Not exactly fair. In a town of 969 people, one or two bad apples can do a lot of damage. The report does not state that.

The data is from 2003, as well.

When we were running fiber through Calvert, there were definitely some "bad apples" but I understand that Calvert PD has been working on cleaning things up in the last couple of years.

I seem to recall a quasi famous high end restaurant there, where maybe the chef got very ill or even died and it was kind of a big deal. This was maybe 1-2 years before Covid. At the time I made a mental note that it seemed like a reason enough to visit Calvert.

cocoamoda.com . Chef Ken had (has) a traumatic brain injury from a fall. They moved to Waco. The wife still makes a few chocolates, but it's nothing like it used to be. Sad situation. The chocolates can be purchased at a coffee shop and I think a winery in Waco.

On a more positive note, I stopped at a local coffee shop in Calvert recently. I think they told me they've been open eight years now? I don't get through Calvert often these days.

I like Calvert, I just wish TxDOT would start construction on the Highway 6 by pass around both Hearne and Calvert.

FYI The "red hill" is an interesting geological feature between Hearne and Calvert. The "ironstone soil" in this region is a upwelling of ochre (Fe2O3). The Native Americans would camp near the hill to collect the ochre. I have been told an old Indian encampment can be found near the cemetery on Red Hill road.

Only 16 burglaries? That's wayyyyy less than what I would've guessed.

Out of 969 people total. This is why Calvert's ranking (in this piece) is truly "fake news" or "lies, damned lies and statistics"
