Maybe they're looking at building further down 30 now with Elon's compound coming.

Not at all surprising to me. HEB does this all the time. Not to sound like Greg D but they made a lot of noise about bringing a Central Market here, then backed off.

This is unbelievably disappointing. We were so excited to have an HEB close. Now we are stuck with Kroger and the worst parking lot design in history.

The HEB on 21 doesn't measure up to the others in terms of quality and variety of items. Not even close.

I like how HEB is the greatest supermarket ever until it's not.

The City of Bryan is aware of recent media coverage reporting the cancellation of the H-E-B store project planned for Boonville Road.

As recently as Friday, July 31, the city has visited with the project developer who states the status of the project remains unchanged. Furthermore, no open issues exist with the City of Bryan.

As recently as Friday, July 31, the city has visited with the H-E-B point-of-contact, who states the status of the project remains unchanged. The point-of-contact is aware of the city's progress on public infrastructure, including traffic signals, and seems pleased with this progress. According to the point-of-contact, H-E-B projects are prioritized by the company and will be initiated based on their schedule.

The property in question is owned by HEB.

Citizens who have heard otherwise are encouraged to contact KBTX and inquire about their source of information.

I still enjoy KBTX news, great small town information source.

More From the KBTX article

Quote:

H-E-B Area Community Coordinator Diane Besosa told KBTX on Thursday that the company has not broken ground on any new Bryan-College Station location and that the site the community has focused on was never part of H-E-B's holdings. Historically, Besosa has spoken for H-E-B on new store openings and offerings in the area.

"We own property closer to University. The area everyone was excited about (across from Miramont) was not part of our purchase and was something the mayor of Bryan wanted to happen," Besosa told KBTX reporter Alex Weister. "It's unfortunate that narrative was promoted to the community by the city because that didn't come from us. Either way, no new stores are slated for additional BCS locations at this time."

Besosa followed up on Friday: "Just to be clear, we weren't the ones clearing that property either. That was done for other city work (and not by us). So we didn't pull out after doing that. But should we decide to clear land and build on any of our properties, we would be the ones to announce it to the community."

Did the city promote the idea that it was on that corner, or was it one of those TexAgs/MyBCS rumors?

Huh? That property has been owned by "HEB LP" since 12/23 according to Brazos CAD.

Simply a matter of wish-full thinking. It is interesting that a simple phone call to HEB administrator could have squashed this rumor a year ago. I guess Rusty/KBTX did not have HEBs phone number.

Rusty's source is full of crap. HEB owns the property across from Miramont.

I don't know why HEB would buy a parcel of property because of something the Mayor "wanted to happen."

I don't know exactly what's going on, besides a pissing match between the Mayor and the notoriously thin-skinned Rusty, but it sounds a lot like HEB at some point intended to develop that property and now may not go forward with it. The fact that their "spokesperson" would spout off something so easily refutable is odd to me, but the fact that KBTX didn't ask her - or publish - a follow up question regarding their ownership of that property isn't surprising.
MyNameIsJeff

It sounds like there may be some hair splitting going on over which exact parcel of land they're talking about. The biggest chunk over there is clearly owned by HEB.

And that piece of land was cleared sometime between 9/17 and 12/19 according to Google Earth imagery, which was before HEB purchased it in 2023.

The turn lane and entrances may have very likely been installed by the city, and HEB would take over from that point if/when they ever start construction.

I've got a feeling this is one of those "both things are true" scenarios, but the facts are being presented in a way to stir the pot and generate clicks.

Diane Besosa: Sure.

***snip***

Jay Socol: Okay. Your title with H-E-B is what?

Diane Besosa: Is Area Community Coordinator.

Jay Socol: What does that mean? What does that entail?

Diane Besosa: I handle donations, sponsorships, community and in store events for all five stores.

I have been speaking with construction and development personnel, not 501(c) coordinators, so therein may be the rub. If you call the front desk at my office and ask what jobs we are bidding you may not get an accurate answer, if you ask to speak with me or an estimator you will get a more accurate one.

It's fine if HEB buys property in consideration of future development then decides to shelve the project and sits on the investment. I'm sure that happens all the time, and it's probably what happened here.

But splitting hairs isn't what was done here. This source of theirs made it sound like the mayor just made up some project out of thin air and that they don't own property across from Miramont. That's a lie. It's a dumb thing for a business to lie like that and get involved in a public dispute with the city.

Either that or KBTX edited the comments in a way that would make one draw that conclusion, which is pretty unethical.

You're probably right. I was just thinking maybe the property she's referring to as being "closer to University" is the parcel they own and the "clearing" was done on the parcel that borders it to the north. Idk, not sure why something misleading like that would be said.

My money is on the source not really being in the know, kinda like Elite said above.
Belton Ag
How long do you want to ignore this user?

Yeah you're probably right that she was trying to play lawyer by saying they own property "closer to University" rather than just saying "the parcel next door to the site that was cleared."

She should get her hand slapped for that one.
AgLaw09
How long do you want to ignore this user?
That's a rather disingenuous characterization of her role. She's an HEB employee, not a 501(c) coordinator. In the interview you cited, the very next Q&A section was her talking about an upcoming store (the one at Jones Crossing 8 years ago) and later discussed HEB's strategy for the store and location.

I don't know whether she's speaking out of turn or not in this case. If she is, then I would expect HEB would put out some corporate-speak statement saying as much. But she has at least put her name to her words. When asked for who they spoke to, CoB's response was "we'll get back to you."

Knowing that KBTX had a named source and what she'd told KBTX, why wouldn't CoB ask their sources before releasing their Friday night statement, especially their HEB POC, about the accuracy of her comments and whether she was authorized to speak on the matter so that they could put out something definitive. It's not like the CoB was up against some looming deadline and needed to get a statement out. Rusty had reported the story 24 hours earlier. Instead, they went with a vague "status of the project remains unchanged" statement. Great! What's the status of the project?

The public silence from HEB since Thursday night's story is deafening. CoB has an opportunity to put up or shut up with their, so far, unnamed sources and directly counter the report that there is no HEB slated for the Booneville location. We'll see, but this is looking more and more like a situation where the CoB overpromised and will underdeliver.

What's disingenuous is her characterization of the property owned by the company for which she speaks is "closer to university." That's pathetic and comes across as some kind of effort to conceal the facts.
AgLaw09
How long do you want to ignore this user?
What are the facts that you believe are being concealed? She didn't deny HEB owns property there. KBTX's article says as much, too.

A named HEB employee says the Boonville HEB isn't happening. All the CoB's two unnamed sources will say is that the "status of the project remains unchanged." If CoB's HEB POC is the better source, then why haven't we heard something more definitive.

Whether Besosa knows what she's talking about regarding whether an HEB is happening on Booneville or is even authorized to comment publicly about it is yet to be answered. What we do know is that the CoB could have answered both but 12+ hours later still hasn't. And again, the public silence from HEB is deafening.
