After 35 years of cable (Myriad, Cox, Suddenlink, Optimum), I am finally cutting the cord. Frontier completed their installation this afternoon. We have several pieces of equipment to return. Can I go to the local Optimum store to both cancel my service and return the equipment? Or do I have to call to cancel? Either way, I am looking forward to it.

Yes, drop all the crap off at their store next to total wine and buy a bottle of Champaigne to celebrate

I will be doing the same in June

You have to call to cancel, but they have a drop box for the equipment.

We dumped Optimum and switched to Frontier fiber 3 years ago and never looked back. There are plenty of streaming options to cover the loss of cable tv.

It is a hassle and they won't want to do it but give the equipment to an employee. Have them give you a receipt for returning it. Unreturned equipment is very common from the dropbox. All it takes is someone not entering it in and then you have a mess on your hands.

Congratulations! This was a glorious milestone event in our lives as well as yours! I will never forget my conversation with them when I told them I was leaving after 27 years! HAHAHA

Also, take pictures of you dropping the equipment off with the serial numbers visible.

I had an older cousin that worked for Midwest Cable back in the day. Really makes you think.

It's done! When we dropped off the equipment, they gave us the number to call and cancel. Of course, it took FOREVER to get them to finally cancel our services. Went through several retention folks that couldn't comprehend why a 3+ decade customer would be canceling.

I have photos of all the equipment and serial numbers and a receipt for their drop off. Fingers crossed I don't receive a surprise bill for any of it.

Just for future reference (for anyone coming across this thread later on), the way to avoid Optimum dragging out the cancellation for-ever, is to just tell them you are moving out of the country, and the first rep will process your cancellation right away!

Couldn't agree more. During one of our waits while being transferred to yet another person, I told my husband we should have said we are canceling because we are leaving the USA due to the current political upheaval.

It's crazy that it's still what they do. I had to called them out 15 YEARS AGO with the nice ladies name who took my equipment and they still argued.

What kind of prices is Frontier charging for the install? I heard you have to have an electrician come out and install a box or some such thing in the house?

I am completely down for switching over, but the cost could really be an issue for our family. Our internet went out for 20 hours last weekend and to say Optimum DGAF about the issues it caused me trying to work for home is an understatement. I can't wait to dump them, but price definitely comes into the equation and we are only paying $45 per month for Optimum for 500 Mpbs.

When I did this a few months ago, I asked for a receipt for the equipment drop-off. He reluctantly gave me one and the equipment was logged in at that time.

No issue with "You did not return the equipment" message from them.

By the way, I also took a picture of the it on site.

I had frontier fiber installed 2 plus years ago and the tech they sent installed the exterior and interior service box himself.

Installation was free. They have the fiber going to a small box on the exterior of the house and then run up and inside to an ONT box inside (looks like a modem). They then set up 2 wireless routers to make sure we are covered everywhere, including our back porch and garage. It only took a couple of hours for the installation.

It's been a couple of days and everything is working great. No issues.

No charge for the installation at all.

By the way, Optimum said I could have 1Gig speed for $39/mo locked for 3 years. Frontier had already had things up and running or I might have taken them up on the offer.

My Frontier installation is tomorrow. Can't wait..

I knew it was coming, but the call to Optimum/Suddenlink/Cox took forever. So many free months they were able to offer, etc. Here's an idea: Why didn't you give me these rates all along? Why do I have to play the game every year threatening to cancel instead of just having a good rate?

Honestly, I'm sure Frontier's initial rates will increase after a year as well- but damn I was tired of playing the rate game. At least there's competition now.

But then you'd still be with Optimum. They pulled out all the offers when I canceled as well. And while I will say at the current house I live at, SL/Optimum was the best it had been across various places i've lived in the brazos valley, we still had issues from time to time. Issues were fewer when I bought my own modem/router but still had em.

My fiber has been perfect. Never had issues in a couple years of having it now. One time a city worker cut a line up the block that knocked out our neighborhood (no fault of Frontier) and we were back up within a couple hours and humming.

I am confident Optimum's acquisition of SL has increased the quality and now having fiber also will too, but as I told every retention person during the process, they lost my business over an almost 20 year duration of horrendous quality and customer service. It wasn't and isn't what's coming up around the corner, and there was nothing a retention specialist could do about that.

Speaking of Optimum…yes, they are a nightmare. I cancelled/handled my MILs stuff about a little over a week ago. Got pics of the items returned and also a receipt showing the serial #s, and all was good. Couldn't believe it went so smooth. I knew it was too good to be true….Low and behold she gets an email a couple days ago saying she still has an outstanding item and that if it isn't turned in, she will be on the hook for $100.

So I went down there and asked what this was, and explained that all items were turned in and that the items in the pic match the receipt they gave. She said "oh, the one in the email is a customer owned item. You are fine. There is no charge". Are you kidding me??? Then why in the he!l did she get an email? I know the person who helped me was just doing her job, and I'm fine with that….no ill will there. But Optimum as a whole, is just the absolute worst!

Similar experience, along with several of us on here. SL/SubOptimum/Altice/WhateverTheyAreThisWeek are crooks, plain and simple.

I have a friend who worked for them locally, and he got another job with one of the local fiber providers. He gave Optimum three weeks notice, as he was in the middle of a couple big projects. They fired him on the spot, and tried to screw him out of his last check.

TL;DR - they are Turrible.

I have been an Optimum/Suddenlink customer for 20+ years.
Cable TV service was cancelled several years ago, but I kept them as the ISP, along with an @suddenlink.net email address.
If I cancel the cable internet component and go with fiber, is it possible to retain the @suddenlink.net email address?

We cancelled everything and set up a new Gmail account, but our suddenlink.net email still works 3 years later.

After reading a post from Brazos Wifi about how most homes only ever use 200 mbps, we checked to see if we were eligible for T Mobile, Verizon, and AT&T home internet. We found out the T mobile tower is pretty close to our house, so we switched.

We have had very few problems and the price is locked in at $55 a month. When the Metronet door knocker salesman came by, we told him we had T mobile and he just walked away.

Man I wish. I live in Navasota, Optimum is the only internet provider outside of Starlink. I can't stomach spending double on my internet just to stick it to them.
