Maybe State City and County would address roads and highways in the county that are already here would help.

6 should have been expanded years ago, yet nothing besides plans for the future. Should have planned for the future a long time ago. Harvey road from hwy 6 to 158 should have been 4 lanes many years ago. But you get more and more businesses, veterans park, 3 to 4 apartment complexes and still nothing. This is like this all throughout BCS. An extra lane to turn right for maybe several hundred feet on the feeder roads at intersections would help as well. Countless other items. Fix the other problems first rather than wasting money on something like this is my thought.

So you want officials from the past to plan ahead but are against current officials for planning ahead? Got it.

So, I would caution local officials to not fall into the same trap that Austin did years ago. The area will continue to grow as prices remain high for housing, and this is a desirable place to live.

If those folks want to continue their rural lifestyle, surely there's property in Grimes County or Robertson County available? Sell at a substantial profit, and relocate.

With the growth, if we do not put in the infrastructure, one day, we'll wake up, and have a nightmare on our hands.

Everyone wants Trader Joe's, Waffle House, and Buc-ee's. What will bring them is growth.

Did you watch the video? We're not growing anywhere near the percentage we've seen the local elected officials state.

I did watch most of it. Arguing the growth rate isn't that high is a moot argument. Here's why: It doesn't pass the eye test.

For example:
When I was a young kid, College Station stopped at 2818.
Texas Avenue was two lanes.
The Bush Library was a swine barn.
Post Oak Mall was brand new.
Texas World Speedway had races and 4th of July picnics.

When I was going to college, Texas A&M was around 40,000 students, Blinn was in the shopping center off Harvey where the old Double Dave's was. Now the big school has 75,000 and Blinn has a nice campus where the dollar movies used to be.

I don't know about you, but that's tremendous growth over my lifetime. Growth that I think is greatly hindered by the fact that Navasota ISD controls the south part of Brazos County. I think if folks wanted to press that, CS would grow south, but because people don't want their kid going to school in Navasota, the only way they can grow is east and west.

nope, saying that we need to fix first the problems that have been an issue for many years now and are getting worse and not have construction on every road in the county to try to alleviate congestion.

then start on the other

Not me. I wish the growth would slow way down. I think we have about all we need and if we don't we are within an hour or so of everything not here.

I commented to the Austin city friends back in the mid to late 1970s that they better watch out or they will have traffic issues and they do. They have the issue that there aren't many major roads going west or around Austin on the west side due to the hills and the cost of construction out there.

What we need is Musk to bore a road tunnel from Navasota to Hearne for the commercial trucks and other traffic that is just traveling through Brazos County.

That was my point. If they don't get ahead of it, we'll have I-35 type traffic on the bypass.

Stopping the east loop puts even more pressure on the bypass.

Maybe CS should have taken Bryan's approach with 2818, but here we are.

Have you ever driven down 30 from 6 to fitch from 7-8 am or 5 to 6 pm ?

Hardly any traffic at all compared to 6 at these times yet you want to convince me people will drive even further out from 6 to follow the same direction ?

Why would they place an "outer loop" less than 5 miles from Hwy 6?

They are probably trying to stay out of some of the low flood plain lands?

They should consider putting it about half way between Wixon Valley and Kurten and connect back into Hwy 6 at OSR rather than 2818. It should be started just south of Hwy 159/Peach Creek Road and extend out wide to the east asap.

Since it's going to be a decade or so being built, you should plan its location on the projected population two to three decades from now.

When 2818 was built in CS it was out of the main part of the city. When the Church of Christ was moved from Church Street to the location across from CoSol, a lot of member were against the move as it was so far for them to go to church. The city basically stopped on Texas Ave South where the city cemetary is.

But if you built east of highway 30, you should have known this would happen some day.

I get it, but, if College Station made 2818 a limited access freeway like they did in Bryan, and not a stoplight filled parking lot, we could have avoided another loop, but that is definitely *not* the case.

I did a little research on growth. Taking the B/CS Metro Statistical Area, using 1960 as a baseline. Here it is -

1960
44,895
(base)

1970
57,978
29.1%

1980
93,588
61.4%

1990
121,862
30.2%

2000
184,885
51.7%

2010
228,660
23.7%

2020
268,248
17.3%

Taking those numbers, average growth in any 10 year span since 1960 is 35.56%

What growth rate is permissible for building a new road? 40%? 50%? Serious question.

I don't.

After graduating from TAMU (in 1987), I turned down several job offers in Dallas, Houston, Austin & other major cities and chose to stay here BECAUSE this was a small town with a strong rural atmosphere. I do not want growth. I do not want new businesses moving here. I don't want migrants from big cities or Kalifornia moving here.

Those businesses you mention - as well as virtually ALL of the businesses that come in with new development - are owned by people who do not live here. This HURTS local businesses. It absolutely baffles me that the BCS Chamber of Commerce recruits businesses to move here. Nor does bringing in outside businesses help employment (this area already has one of the lowest unemployment rates in the nation).

We need to protect rural, undeveloped property. They ain't making any more of it. Once a farm or ranch is paved over and developed, it is gone forever.

Sure, they could.

But the point is not the number of homes that get destroyed. The point is that the RURAL LIFESTYLE is destroyed.

and that will happen regardless of where the road is built. Which is why the name of the group is NO east loop.
Meaning - don't build it AT ALL.

Quite honestly, if the road is built - I WANT it to go through the middle of my living room. That way they at least have to pay me to move somewhere the won't get developed. Maybe I could actually see stars at night again.

The "propaganda" on the other side (pushing the project) is being paid $11 million dollars. The video even shows the names of who donated money to the PAC (and how much) to pay for the advertising for the bond proposals.

Who do you think has more propoganda?

So, I just browsed some of the old threads on the Wellborn annexation. I didn't see these same posters advocating for their rural lifestyle back then. I know several folks who sold their places and moved to surrounding counties.

Dissidents are only vocal when it directly affects them.

franchiseed businesses are owned by people who are local.
Texas Roadhouse is a good example of a chain owned by two very LOCAL successful people

the argument that any businesses built along the new route would only benefit people or corporations outside of B/CS is not true and easily proven false.

Hopefully that is specific enough.

Don't Austin my BCS.

It is really hard to translate respect through a message board, but I hope you know I respond with the utmost. 1987 was almost 40 years ago. This is not anywhere close to the same B/CS, not even close to the same Texas, and hasn't been for a while. Aggieland and Texas are going to remain in the crosshairs of growth. Texas is about to become the 7th largest economy in the world. Our state policies towards business, taxes, and innovation will continue to exacerbate growth. Harsh reality, but it's coming whether we like it or not. The big and very tough decisions about the future of this area (like the Loop) simply cannot take into account the desires of today more so than the genuine needs of tomorrow. Sorry it isn't the same place you chose to stay way back then, sometimes I wish it was still that way too, but the only thing constant in our world is change. Still plenty of great places not far from here for you to see the stars. God bless!
