The City of College Station is currently in the process of constructing 3 new baseball fields, including a championship field, all adjacent to the existing 5 softball fields at Veteran's Park, with soccer fields across the street also on park property.

As one member of council, I do not want us to build these fields only to look back and think 'why oh why didn't we just do ______!'

Understanding that we cannot accommodate everything everyone wants, I would still like to hear from baseball aficionados as to what you think is important in this project.

Bob,

You know me - act in the short term so as to affect the long term

The truth is COCS needs to find a 3rd party PRIVATE market solution.

There are organizations out there with p&l's to show that this can work and *gasp* the city makes some kinda ROI

Those that have submitted that information need to have their full public hearing so citizens actually know what the full range of options are.

Enough of this "know better than thee" stuff. And I'm not talking about you of course

But there are those that have heard of other choices on things but only let the public know about the ones that they actually want to see gain support.

Turf the fields (at least the infield area). Avoid grass/dirt infields.

Howdy Craig,

Three councils ago a promise was made about Texas Independence Ballpark. That fell through due to poor soil conditions. We heard loud and clear that citizens wanted the ball fields. So, we repurposed TIP and looked for an alternative location for ball fields. Veterans had open land, parking, lighting, streets and additional infrastructure- so we chose that location. It has the benefit of being centrally located for municipal cooperation with CoB. These ball fields are approved after multiple open meetings and will be built.

I'm simply asking folks in the know, public feedback, on what features they feel are important.

Plans change. There were originally going to be four more softball fields on that location.

To me, and I don't know if there is room, but if the city would make a space somewhere around the perimeter of the park for locals businesses who have food trucks to be able to set up and serve the visitors to the park especially during tournaments a wide range of food options.

Make one of the fields big enough/nice enough to get a team like the bombers to come play there either exhibition or long term. Travis field in Bryan is a dump; and it's still constantly busy because of lack of similar spaces.

Are these being used for Little Leagie fields primarily or for tournament teams? If for LL, do NOT do what Bryan did to the United fields by Bomber Stadium. They have a private company running them and have completely destroyed the community feel of them. We thought we were getting nice fields for our local leagues. What we got was a restricted game and practice schedule, crazy expensive concessions, and a completely fenced off property which can not be accessed easily by our local teams.

Even if they are primarily for tournament ball, please find a way to give priority to local teams with availability and pricing. Also, some batting cages and bullpens open to the public (when not being used for practices or games) would be awesome!

Thanks for this feedback. Are you referring to the Travis Fields? If so, my understanding is they are packed and well utilized. No? Is your feedback because you would rather have a quiet place for local kids, rather than a big tournament and tourism draw? And if that's so, how do you get both? I thought tournament play was only a short, specific and limited time during the year, with local play the rest of the time. Please explain further.

My suggestion would be to visit complexes that host tournaments andthis is importantvisit while there is a large tournament going on. See what works and what is lacking. Lots of ballparks look really nice until they host a large event.

Here are some things to consider, although I realize space and cost are factors:

Ample parking, especially when one round of games is going and another is about to start
Warmup areas
Batting cages
Bullpens (screened to contain errant throws)
Shade for spectators
Adequate restrooms and changing facilities
Good drainage on fields and concourses
Concession areas that handle crowds (including lines, ingress and egress)
Covered areas for rain delays
Comfortable seating and areas for lawn chairs
Enough room between fields (so foul balls don't always go into adjacent fields) and/or adequate netting
Equipment rooms, including baseball equipment such as pitching machines, portable mounds, etc, and groundskeeping equipment
Umpire rooms
Space for tournament officials
Space for scorer's tables, announcers

This community also needs more full-size ballparks.

As a family who has been involved with gourmet/travel baseball for several years now, yes, we need these and others in this city to draw tournaments on a regular basis. We all have to go to Waco, Houston, Franklin and other surrounding areas now to make this happen. Never understood why B/CS could not have a nice complex to draw some of these tournies?? These other towns and cities are getting all of our money that we are spending and instead, B/CS could reap that reward.

Travel baseball has ballooned big time over the last handful of years and it's not going anywhere. We are in the middle, so to speak, of all of the cities and towns listed above and would be a good central location to draw them here instead. All of the hotel, gas, food and any other money that is spent would be great. Even places like Academy would reap the rewards. I can't tell you how many times we have been somewhere like Conroe, or Houston or Waco and have to lookup a place like Academt because my son needed a new pair of socks, or batting gloves or whatever.

As far as what features, I agree with good batting cages, accessible restrooms, maybe a shade overhead on each of the stands? If I can think of any others, I will add to the post

As a current youth baseball parent the fields are desperately needed. This is a HUGE baseball town, and little league gets first dibs at the City fields. Travel teams get the off days and some weekends.

Right now with Bachmann fields unavailable, it's even harder to get practices/games set at decent times for some of the younger kids.

The Travis Fields in Bryan are nice and well laid out. However, the parking is extremely limited, so it's rough on tournament weekends. I'm not sure who manages them, but they are constantly busy and working to bring in travel ball tournaments year round. (This is probably why a previous poster mentioned the lack of community use. It's busy and usually reserved for travel teams. (I'm not sure if Bryan little league uses it or not.))

So yes, more baseball fields are needed! They also need to be flexible in sizing so that bases/pitching mounds can be adjusted for different age groups. The Travis fields have movable mounds and bases that allow them to be used for baseball and softball of multiple age groups.

That is a great list. Hopefully these are full size fields and artificial turf. Easy enough to move the bases and mounds and install a temp fence for younger teams as needed.

I will add I am not sure if the area allows it but I don't like the layout drawn. If it was possible fit three properly oriented fields in that space it would be a more popular place to play. If not they definitely need ample space between them

There's no doubt the batter's boxes at Veterans (and probably everywhere else in town) suck but plenty of places manage to keep their fields in better shape. The real question is does the maintenance cost outweigh the cost of turf?

This is a great list. I suggest you visit Franklin to see one of the best ballparks in the state.

Please build HS fields. The Bachman fields 5&6 are too small for HS players. Fences are 300. These fields are 13 and 14 year old fields. You probably need another 4 Plex of little league fields too.

I feel like that layout is locked in but I'm not sure. It looks to me like space is at a premium. Thanks for the feedback.

If you are talking about Bombers Field, not sure that's a fair example. It seems like the Bombers owner was responsible for that upkeep and didn't ever do it. I love having the Bombers, but that park is a train wreck.

Anyhow, all dirt & grass fields pretty well suck when the city doesn't take of them how they are supposed to. Take a look at Bachmann fields.

I'm not sure who manages them, but they are constantly busy and working to bring in travel ball tournaments year round. (This is probably why a previous poster mentioned the lack of community use. It's busy and usually reserved for travel teams. (I'm not sure if Bryan little league uses it or not.))

So yes, more baseball fields are needed! They also need to be flexible in sizing so that bases/pitching mounds can be adjusted for different age groups. The Travis fields have movable mounds and bases that allow them to be used for baseball and softball of multiple age groups.

Sir- I would not build baseball and softball field at Veterans Park. I would remove all of the soccer fields from Bachmann Park, and make that the youth baseball district. Alternatively, I would add soccer fields to Veterans Park, and make that the soccer district.

Central Park would be the youth softball district.
