Let this serve as a PSA for those using Optimum and paying out the wazoo. They used to charge me $112/month just for internet. I spent $100 with a third party company called Trim who was able to negotiate the bill down to $82/month.
Two days ago my internet service went down even though there was no outage in my area. I had some very timely work that needed to get done and the customer service rep said he would set up a technician to come the next day (yesterday) between 8-11 AM. He suggested in the meantime that I could take my router into the Optimum store and switch it out to see if that fixed the problem.
I did that but it didn't work. So I waited around yesterday for a technician and then realized that the moron I talked to scheduled the tech for March 6th, not February 6th. So I had to call them again and demand they get a technician over immediately and they said nobody would be available until today.
Coincidentally, Brazos WiFi was just recently installed literally in my front yard. So I walked out to the street and called the number on their sign and they got someone over here within less than an hour who got me instantly set up with internet and for only $20/month for the next year and then an increase after that to $75/month.
When I called Optimum to cancel my service they asked who I switched to and how much am I paying. I told them and suddenly Optimum offers me the same $20/month for the next TWO years. I politely declined.
TL;DR If you are paying Optimum too much call them and tell them you are canceling. You'll save a ton of money in the process.
