Sergeant Mark Butler of the Navasota Police Department died in the line of duty yesterday.

Please pray for his wife, fellow officers, first responders and witnesses to the horrific needless wreck.

Several witnesses to the incident tell KBTX that Sgt. Butler prevented the Jeep from hitting their vehicles and labeled him as a hero who sacrificed his life to save the lives of others.

Hero is a term I do not use regularly, in this case, a true Hero... T&P

What's the best way to reliably support his family? The Houston 100 Club Survivors Fund?

Rest In Peace, Sergeant Butler.

It makes me sick that a life was so needlessly taken, but, at the same time, so thankful for and appreciative of those that willingly put themselves in harm's way to protect us.

Between this tragedy and the fatal shooting of a Sheriff's Deputy and near fatal shooting of a K9 in Houston/Brazoria yesterday, it was a really difficult day for law enforcement. Heroes everywhere were lost.

I was coming through Navasota to CS not long after this happened. Northbound traffic diverted to 3090/Piedmont. I went back across the highway to cut over to business 6, and there were a ton of emergency vehicles. Didn't know what it was at the time, but knew it had to be bad

Friend of mine was at the convenience store in Navasota, and saw him run out and jump in his car right before it happened.

From the City of Navasota's FB page regarding the candlelight vigil this evening:

"Candlelight Vigil to Honor Sergeant Mark Butler

This evening, a Candlelight Vigil will be held at Navasota City Hall near the Frank Hamer Statue at 6:00 PM to honor the life and service of Sergeant Mark Butler. Mayor Bert Miller and Chief Michael Mize will offer remarks at the beginning of the vigil. The vigil will be come-and-go, allowing our community to gather in reflection and support for Sergeant Butler's wife, family, and the Navasota Police Department during this difficult time. Please join us in remembering Sergeant Butler and his dedication to our community."

I read about this in The Eagle this morning. I'm confused how both the officer and the perp were killed. I thought I also saw that it was a head on collision. Did the perp turn around and play a game of chicken?

RIP to the officer.

The perp was traveling southbound in the northbound lanes of Highway 6. Sgt. Butler was in the northbound lane.

Probably delay notifying next of kin before they publicly release her name.

While I am sure that is right, she died after committing one crime and while committing a second in fleeing from the police. Part of me thinks you have lost the basic cover of time and privacy in situations like this. Victim absolutely. Criminal? Not so much.

Guy is a hero. So grateful that we have men and women still willing to do this, and thankful to God I survived 28 years of it.

Unbelievably sad.

That doesn't make her family criminal. They deserve to learn in a humane way not by reading a news story on Facebook.

Was coming back to College Station after taking a friend to her doctors appointment in Houston when we came to a standstill on 6 yesterday, so sad to hear an officer lost his life.

I believe The Houston 100 Club Survivors Fund is a general fund for fallen officers.

According to KBTX, they're still trying to ID her. Apparently the only ID she had was the fake one she used to try to pass the forged check.

From the100club.org:

Quote:

NOTIFICATION
The 100 Club is notified and requested to assist with a line-of-duty death or serious injury of a local peace officer or firefighter.

IMMEDIATE ASSISTANCE
The 100 Club provides $20,000 immediately upon the line of duty death of a fallen hero.

ADDITIONAL SUPPORT
The 100 Club provides further in depth financial support as needed to our heroes and their dependent families. This support includes relieving the financial burden of mortgages, vehicle loans, and assisting with future educational needs of any children. Averaging over $300,000 per family.

SURVIVORS FUND
The Survivors Fund is activated to raise and provide funds for the fallen hero's dependent family. Donations are accepted from members and the community alike. 100% of all donated funds are used for fallen and seriously-injured heroes and their dependent families.

As dubi posted, if a donation to the survivors fund is made in memory of a specific fallen hero, 100% of those funds will go to that person / their family. Donations not in honor/in memory go to the general survivors fund.

The 100 club never solicits for donations by phone (but they will by mail). They do not sell or share donor personal information.
