Do not believe the rumor about the city buying it to keep it from becoming a storage facility. Many comments are bring made by current council and staff to save face after what was a terrible decision.

Before the city's acquisition, two private entities were actively pursuing the building for development of a new entertainment center use.

The city, however, outbid them, overpaying by several million dollars for the Macy's property. This costly decision has proven to be a mistake, as evidenced by the recent RFP that failed to attract a single bid.

Mayor John Nichols and City Manager Bryan Woods bear full responsibility for this financial debacle.

That makes much more sense, because the storage center story gives an air of nobility for not permanently ruining the mall.

The problem is that the "e-sports arena" plan wasn't a good one that actually integrated it with the mall itself (I don't see how it would've connected it with the mall and the outside) and had they really wanted to prevent the storage center there would be some grander plan to work with CBL & Associates to revitalize the property somehow.

Seems like years now (it has been) I have been trying to get peoples attention to the fact that College Station is "one party rule".

This is the type of thing that happens over and over again.

Softball fields
Macy's
the new ~$26m park in old softball fields
Now - Smith Track which will be a money pit beyond counting

** I watched with my own eyes - in person - council members falling asleep during hearings on water rights that instead of offering some limp response in a press release would have been the moment to fight but instead we now have to pony up $90,000,000 for water wells.**

You get people who raise your taxes, do nothing for quality of life (aside from being active on social media to put a gloss on it) and there are no electoral consequences.

You can try and spin me all you want but I ain't movin'

COCS is being run into the ground before our eyes but that's ok because we can always put something cute on facebook.

Administrative Excellence has been throw to the ground in the name of "parks and folly"

Everyone on staff and former members of staff know this. Time we do too.

And why did you pull out from running for council?

Simple

Voters deserved a clear choice in the election.

Not the same 3 way to a run off we have seen for years.

I stood by it then and I do now. This wasn't a vanity trip for myself nor should it be for anyone.

Thoughts?

PS - we have had more 3 way races in COCS in the past 6 years than all of Brazos county/bryan combined

Should kinda tell the tale of what is actually happening

This.

Corner of Harvey and 6

I was at the parks and rec meeting where they gave out the first of the plans to convert this into a"park"

It is nearly 90% flood plain and the flood remediation alone will be between $6-7m roughly

Sorry small edit -

Not to mention the increased flooding downstream which will take place due to all the flood migration that takes place upriver

The water has to go somewhere

Yea… I don't believe in trashing anyone by name. I think the policy speaks for itself.

It is the results or lack thereof that people should focus on.

Never had the pleasure of speaking with her though.

You dont understand

Its not really a usable space

Remember the robot in Lost In Space He would be saying those words if he walked into Macys

Again from what I have been told from a big time realtor

So, they spent $7.3 M (plus monthly common area maintenance fees) for a piece of property that is not useable?

That seems par for the course.
It is useable by a person needing the space. The problem is is all the support posts are obstructions for many uses and also all the flooring was removed after the first floor flood from the freeze damage that occured just before the city bought it. I have been in it two times since the flood.

Not a lot of demand for 103,000 square feet of CHVAC area that would need a multiple hundred thousands of reno $$$ to use.
Too bad we don't need a City Hall.

So I could have bid $1 and bought the old Macy's property??? Dang it. Missed opportunity.

From that KBTX article: "The City recognizes the property's critical importance and potential as a transformative catalyst for economic growth and revitalization in the surrounding area. We're committed to pursuing all viable opportunities while ensuring a process that maximizes the property's potential and aligns with the long-term vision for the community," the city said in its most recent remarks.

Critical importance. Transformative catalyst. Maximizing potential. Long term vision for the community....

Wow! I am so proud. I'd like to know who wrote this so I know who to credit when I see "The City".

I didn't write that, and I don't altogether disagree with it. However, the Macy's alone would be hard pressed to serve as a catalyst for transformative change for the surrounding area. That kind of transformation would require the unanimous agreement of all 5 owners of the mall.

The whole matter raises significant questions regarding the proper role of government, both in the decision to acquire the property without proper due diligence, the lack of transparency in what led up to the acquisition, and the amount of time it's now sat vacant.

Malls require foot traffic, and an empty anchor that once was the main entrance to the mall being shuttered hurts the businesses currently located there.

For all that, I'm extremely motivated to find an answer, have two potential solutions I'm formulating, and really want to artfully extract ourselves from it in a way that benefits the taxpayers.

Respectfully

Bob, how about selling it to a church. Oh wait, that is what got the city in this mess. Never mind.
