The Republic's chicken fried filet mignon ain't bad. Ditto chicken fried oysters.

Some years back I gave the chicken fried filet mignon a shot after all the hype. Suffice to say it holds the record for the greatest entree disappointment I've ever had at any restaurant.

CFS veteran of 5 decades.

- Believe it or not, IMO Jose's Mexican Restaurant had the best CFS in town a few years ago. Haven't been in awhile so not sure if it still does.

- Had the Marfa CFS about a half dozen times. Very good and unique, but Jose's was a tad better IMO

- As mentioned, The Republic chicken fried medallions are off the chart. But not true CFS. Do yourself a favor and order them sometime, though.

- Neither of the above are better that Youngblood's or Wehrman's back in the day.

- Expanding out of town for reference, NONE of the above are better than the old (1970s and 80s) Threadgill's in Austin, Varsity Inn in Seguin, or Tip Top and Albert's in San Antonio. I'm afraid true greatness is gone forever, and vets like me have known this for awhile.

Have you tried Legends Steakhouse in Madisonville? I had theirs a couple of years ago, and it was very good.

Also, Freiheit Country Store in New Braunfels is great.

The CFS at the Pony Express in Hearne is fantastic. I try to get it every time I am in Hearne.

Salt Grass has a pretty decent chicken fried steak.

I know where not to get a CFS. Was in the Woodlands today running an errand and decided to have a CFS at the Republic Grille. It covered more than half the plate. The meat inside was about the size of my tea glass and thick and chewy as could be. All hat and no cattle.

Crazy. I've recommended it to lots of people scared to go there because of the price and I've yet to hear they didn't like it. It's what most people I know get when they go. For a restaurant as pricy as that one is, $28 for chicken fried fillet medallions with two sides included is a hell of a deal.

I concur the conventional wisdom would suggest so. Without being facetious I honestly would rather have had cotton patch or something. It was a joke at the table: I wasn't the only one who had it.

Been some years since I lived there but the last time I went to the Feed Barn was probably late 2022 and I also thought school cafeteria. Pretty sure it was frozen out of a box.

It is frozen out of a box. I know the owner as he's a cousin of some of my in-laws. Great guy with tons of attention to detail in his restaurant, but he will tell you straight up that's how it is. They just dont have time to do a scratch-made one in house with everything else they do. They did switch over to a higher quality 44 farms branded one, that was still pre-breaded and frozen that was better, but their distributor stopped carrying them and so they went back to the original one.

With lots of other stuff that is made in house there, I've asked him before why he still carries it and he says they still have plenty of regulars that order it. And as evidenced by this thread and every other "best CFS" threads that this board seems to have a couple of times a year, there are people who genuinely enjoy it.

For me: Ronin ($$$), Longhorn, and Sodolaks are my favorites. Havent had Marfa yet but need to try it out with all the positive recommendations.

It is hard to beat Cotton Patch with Jalapeños gravy and 2 sides on Monday for $9.99. But Marta is still my favorite by a mile. Wife and I usually share and then split a dessert with the savings.

Tried Sodolaks last night based on early recommendations in this thread. Pretty good and you certainly can't beat the price

In the old days, I would have said the Somerville Steakhouse, or that place in Snook that Chip Howard used to promote.

I loved Somerville Steakhouse….that's a place I forgot about. When did it close?

Can't remember exactly but it has probably been 8-10 years ago at least. Used to eat there every evening after a day on the lake.

I had a schnitzel at the Bavarian Brauhaus that was honestly way more like cfs than actual schnitzel. It was good.

This thread has inspired me to revisit some local CFS options. So far...

Marfa: 7/10
Saltgrass: 7/10
Sodolak's: 9/10
Koppe Bridge: 2/10

A VI reference! You, sir, are indeed a CFS veteran.

According to this thread, I need to try out Marfa's. (Yikes! $22, maybe I'll wait)
How long has it been since you ate a CFS at the Feed Barn? I was there several months ago and their CFS was just like the "cutlets" we used to get served in the cafeteria in high school.

Marfa's is my favorite. It's big. One is enough for my husband and I to share.
Nix the Feed Barn, They have CFS from Cisco or other pre-made source. May of been made in house once upon a time but not anymore.

Sodolaks in Snook. The large comes on its own plate.
Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.

The CF pork chop from Jack Allen's is one of the best dishes in Austin. My buddy is a well-known chef in that city and he thinks Jack Allen's is the best for your money.

Had the Republic CFS medallions only one time and there was no crunch or texture to it. Almost tasted like it had been heated up from day before . Honestly The Republic has disappointed me way more than satisfied me over the years.

CFS at Republic was a huge letdown several years ago. Will never roll the dice on it again. On another note, I added a rating for the CFS at Saltgrass to my earlier post. It was OK but nothing to write home about. On-par with Marfa. Sodolak's still holds the title for me.

I don't get why size matters so much....
FlyRod
How long do you want to ignore this user?
It's not the size of your CFS, it's how you handle it and make as enjoyable as possible.

yes, it was a play on words but the best CFS I've ever had was about half the size of typical CFS.

Neinast Mexican Grill & Steakhouse in Lyons. Good portions. The Gravy is good but if you're feeling wild you can substitute Queso.
