Someday one of these electric scooters will run someone over on the TAMU campus.
I do not see a way to police them effectively, its the wild west all over again.

Someday?

Pretty sure it's already happened.

Stupid people do stupid things and then sue the manufacturer and get rich. Stupid people shouldn't be rewarded for stupidity.

Maybe some smart person here can calculate the odds of being run over by a car here vs. an electric scooter.

Hell I'd be willing to bet being attacked by a pack of feral hogs is more likely than a scooter massacre.

Other than more lanes that isn't uncommon on Dexter or Bizzell in the morning or evenings. Not only scooters but one wheels. Both like the center of the street or smoother car lanes rather than the bike lanes on Bizzell.

It's been that way with the bikes for many, many years when running all the red lights and stop signs. We had a gal that was hit by a car a block from my house turning at a stop sign when she went through the stop sign straight and she hit the front right side of the car. She wasn't injured but her bike was basically toast.

I think they are likely manufactured by a cabal of personal injury lawyers and orthopedic surgeons.

Transportation code 551.352:

Quote:

(a) A motor-assisted scooter may be operated only on a street or highway for which the posted speed limit is 35 miles per hour or less. The motor-assisted scooter may cross a road or street at an intersection where the road or street has a posted speed limit of more than 35 miles per hour.
(b) A county or municipality may prohibit the operation of a motor-assisted scooter on a street, highway, or sidewalk if the governing body of the county or municipality determines that the prohibition is necessary in the interest of safety.
(c) The department may prohibit the operation of a motor-assisted scooter on a highway if it determines that the prohibition is necessary in the interest of safety.
(d) A person may operate a motor-assisted scooter on a path set aside for the exclusive operation of bicycles or on a sidewalk. Except as otherwise provided by this section, a provision of this title applicable to the operation of a bicycle applies to the operation of a motor-assisted scooter.
(e) A provision of this title applicable to a motor vehicle does not apply to a motor-assisted scooter.

So, yes, they're allowed to be in the roadway on Dexter and Bizell. According to the letter of the law, they can do it on University going through campus between South College and the tracks, as well as the 35 mph zone on Wellborn, although doing so would be ill-advised, IMO.

I have never seen an issue with scooters, bikes, or every the guy that has the Onewheel on Dexter and West Dexter and I drive it two to three times a day most days. Probably more risk of two cars hitting due to many drivers driving too fast on the narrow street.

When the council gets a break from investing in real estate maybe they can discuss it.

I have no problem with electric scooters when (and if) they obey traffic laws.. 9/10 they do not.
FYI it is suicidal to ride an electric scooter on a busy street, even if it is legal.

As an ambulatory disabled person, I fully expect to be run over by a scooter as I cross the street to my church in Northgate.

I'm retired and I get them too. I kept my NetID and email address. Makes it easier to log into Workday for benefits stuff and request journal articles from the library.

Not if the University wants to comply with Federal law and avoid big fines. Unfortunately, the Feds say an electric scooter is a "motor vehicle" even thought the Texas Penal Code does not.
