Was at HEB this morning and had a flashback to the time of Covid panic buying of paper products. The toilet paper and paper towel aisle was nearly empty. Rusty posted a photo from Sam's Club of shoppers' carts filled up with paper products.

I'm assuming this is due to the port strikes. I'm wondering what else will be affected?

People are stupid. Something like 95% of toilet paper and paper towels are made domestically. They are moved by truck and rail.

Bananas are probably going to be the first thing we notice.

Hard to tell. We don't import paper towels from countries shipping to the east coast and gulf, right? Seems people are running the old COVID playbook.

Maybe hand sanitizer is next?

Yep. It will be a self-fulfilling prophecy. People will go buy up the paper goods thinking there is going to be a shortage, and in doing so, they'll cause a shortage.

Oh no. Now my wife won't be able buy bananas, let them ripen on our counter, and shove them in our freezer with all the other ones she's collected for all that banana bread she is never going to make.

Walmart remained the most extensive US importer on the top 100 list by volume and is approaching one million-TEU, ( 20 foot container equivalent unit) moving over 7.3X the capacity of Amazon that ranked 12.

The leading retail importers, Walmart, Target, Home Depot, and Lowe's collectively imported nearly 2.3 million TEU, accounting for almost one out of every 10 US import TEU.

Our baby formula is a pretty popular brand and it says in the container it's imported from Europe. It's already hard to find and yes I'm sure it's becoming a self fulfilling prophecy.

But nonetheless, the supply chain issues this will cause will be a disaster. Not to mention more inflation and eventually unemployment. There are lots of peripheral jobs associated with port shipping that are not included in this strike (warehouse workers, truck and rail workers, customs, etc). All those jobs will be in jeopardy as time goes on. Not to mention all the people that work for companies and small businesses across the nation that rely on imports to stock their shelves.

This situation is terrible for the economy.

There will be shortages. In the natural course, it wouldn't happen so quickly as it takes time for issues to work itself through the supply chain. But there absolutely will be shortages. Panic buying pulls it forward, but, hard to blame people when there doesn't seem to be much optimism for the strike right now.

Well, stock in companies that build bidets are up....Plus demand for cheese will likely decrease.

One thing I learned during Covid was to not limit your shopping to the one store you might have a membership at. Never had trouble finding TP.

This is so funny. I was at HEB Caprock today & was amazed by the TP rush. USA supplies almost all of the raw materials that makes TP, why would the strike impact TP production? Makes no sense.

I live alone. I go through a 2-pack of paper towels each month. I had to make my monthly paper-towel purchase on Tuesday and there was one lonely 8-pack sitting on the shelf in the entire aisle at the grocery store. So now I have enough paper towels to last until 2025.

I apologize to everyone for being part of the problem.
