new or renewal? Friend recently renewed his using the new online system and received the passport in the mail in less than two weeks.

I can't speak to other options, but back in the spring we did ours at the courthouse in Franklin. Dropped them off and had the new ones back in about 2 weeks. We did not expedite.
Just completed a renewal, amazing efficiency for a gov't agency, new one arrived 16 days after submittal, standard processing.

+1 We went through them last Summer (we'd let the old ones expired). Quick service, and I got my new passport and border card in under 3 weekskraut said:

+2, we renewed our three kids last summer had similar experience. Less than a month.
If you absolutely have to have one quick, and have a travel itinerary, go to the passport office in Houston.

+3 for us. Did it for the wife and kiddo.
Fast options are available if you meet certain criteria. They have life or death appointments, urgent travel appointments, etc in Houston. They used to be able to do it same day, but I'm not sure anymore, and they say no walk ins now.

If you get really pinched on time you should buy a refundable flight to Mexico or wherever. You can get an emergency rush on your passport as long as you bring proof of your flight (travel and deadline). They'll rush it and then you just refund the flight
I had great results going to the big PO in Bryan. Had my renewed passsport in a couple of weeks.
