Left uturn on red arrow after stop?

Twice in the past week on Texas Ave I have been behind a person making a left uturn at intersections after stopping at a red arrow. In one instance late this morning the person going through the intersection almost hit the gal doing the uturn.

Has the law changed or are people just not caring to follow traffic laws?

Not caring. Red is stop, except can turn right after yielding. Cannot turn left or u-turn on red. To avoid EXACTLY the situation you're describing.

I thought the medians were going to protect us from all this? Not cause more issues?

Im seeing drivers do all kinds of crazy stuff. Think a lot of people are just fed up with the medians, excessive redlights, and over governance.

The only time you can make a left turn on a red light is if you're on a one-way street, turning onto another one-way street.

Every year the State of Texas takes 70K+ of the worst drivers in the state and concentrates them in one small area. CoCS needs additional resources to cope.

Or maybe they're just bad drivers. I doubt red light runners are protesting anything.

I saw someone get pulled over for disobeying the new lights for right hand turns from south holleman onto 2818. The sign says "no right turn on red" but people in the far right lane still think it is ok. The cop was in the far left a couple cars over waiting and the driver never even saw them.

I see those right turn people every time I'm on 2818. They don't understand the process or don't care.

CSPD could patrol there, Texas/Harvey, Texas/Bush, and Texas/University and write ticket after ticket all day and all night.

Maybe, and I'm just spitballing here, but maybe the local councilman could suggest that as a revenue stream instead of charging people to park in front of their homes or bumping up taxes.

Ok. I just didn't realize that being fed up is protesting. Either way, people who doing left uturns on red lights, are risking their lives with on-coming traffic. I hope they all get tickets.

That already is, as far as I can tell, the primary function of the PD motorcycle units.

That, and football team bus escort on game day.

Since this is the traffic expert thread, they put up a new sign at 29th and Briarcrest. Turn lane turning right onto Briarcrest from 29th, it says "Right Turn Signal." So what are they trying to say? There wasn't anything there before.

U-turns should be illegal period. I hate being behind people that do it and have nearly ran into the back of several because I'm expecting them to just turn but instead they do a 180.

The problem is, all the medians has made such a mess of things, U-turns are the "easiest" way to get to where you're going.

I believe it's a right on red, or protected right signal, when westbound Briarcrest is turning left onto 29th.

It's just calling your attention to the fact that the signal lamp immediately above the sign is for the right turn lane.

I see this at least weekly on Texas at Deacon. Traffic headed north on Texas coming off 6 will make a u turn at Deacon to head south on the 6 access road (or back up the ramp). I think they think it's legal as long as they start turning before they technically make it to the line marking the intersection, but I have seen them almost hit/get hit by cross traffic turning onto 6.

Re: motor units writing tickets, yes. That's why they exist. Its official term is the Traffic Safety Unit. The entire purpose of motorcycle units everywhere is traffic enforcement and escort duties.

I don't know how old the Google Street View of that intersection is, but right now it doesn't show any No U-Turn sign there, so a U-turn would be legal there.

What's NOT legal is crossing that solid yellow line. So to make a legal U-turn there, you have to go all the way up to the limit line and make the turn in the intersection when there's a green arrow or flashing yellow when clear.

It's illegal to cross a solid yellow line? Aren't most turn lanes solid yellow? What's the difference at this intersection and a U-turn?

And how about Hwy 40 and Eagle Ave? It's solid yellow lines with yellow crossmarks (Gore zone?, which should be treated as a flush median). But I see vehicles, even school buses, turn left there all the time.

If people don't get in a hurry and know who has the right of way, U-turns are a great way to move traffice through intersections.

Streets in BCS are either too narrow (e,g Bryan Texas av.) or too busy. There is only two solutions, no U turns anywhere or no turn right on red, everywhere. (#3 remove medians, which will not happen). The current situation is just too dangerous.

But they are making this u turn when the light is green for people turning left from the deacon exit on Business 6. Those people are making their left turn while a person is trying to make a u turn to occupy that same lane. Or there is a green light for people turning right from Deacon onto the HW6 ramp. But these people making the u turn ignore that their light is red and make the u turn anyway.

They are. But there is no median at the intersection, so the medians provide no help for the bad driving at the intersections. Maybe we need more medians, through the intersections.

Yep.

Everyone knew that was going to happen.

Except the people that made the decision to put them in.

I'll admit, I am one of them. I make a lot more questionable (but legal I think?) u-turns now that there are multiple shopping centers in town that you can't get to otherwise. Multiple times have almost been hit by people turning right on red and not looking for u-turners. My hope is that they'll do a study in a few years and figure out the medians cause more problems than they solved.

I saw what I'm guessing was a college student high center a Prius on said median a while back.

What problem did that solve, exactly?

Would rather see someone turn right then uturn than basically force a left turn in ****ty traffic

If people don't get in a hurry and know who has the right of way, U-turns are a great way to move traffice through intersections.
So, at Briarcrest and Hwy 6 red light, heading towards Target side from Bryan High side, in the turn lane, you think it is "a great way to move traffic through an intersection" (a very busy intersection mind you) to have someone making a U-turn there (both directions are green) backing up the turn lane that is already backed up to Sonic, waiting on a clear space to go the opposite direction (provided there is an opening)? Similar situation at Texas and Hollemon I believe. No, it is supremely selfish and could easily cause an accident because that action is so inconceivably dumb that most motorists would never expect someone to be that out of touch.

Why would anyone need to make a u-turn at those locations?
