Been going on Thursdays for the bbq porkchop for many years.

Hate it for Alan. He is a good dude.

some of the best bbq in Texas is found in humble gas stations…many of which have not been discovered yet by Texas Monthly and their ilk.

yeah, no. Unless you fall in the category of people who call chopped beef sandwiches "best bbq," then sure...
I think this is the personal arbitrary line that I draw between good and great BBQ. I enjoy Rudy's and C&J, but I'm generally going to get a sandwich at places like that. I'm not getting a sandwich from a high-level BBQ place (the exception being Stanley's in Tyler; if you know, you know).

To copy and paste my post from the food board:

Fargo's was my introduction to really good barbecue when I was in college. 2012 or so when they were carry out only near the co-op.

Then they moved a little further south down Texas, and quality seemed to drop a little. Then they moved to their last location. Quality definitely seemed to suffer, along with what I would expect to be significantly increased operating costs due to a much larger building (a building that presented a very strange atmosphere for a barbecue joint).

I hate to see it go, but I honestly hadn't gone much in the last several years. And it seemed like that was the case for a lot of people, as their parking lot was usually empty at lunch time when I drive by.

That's fair. My point was that good bbq can be found in out of the way places, and while I wouldn't get a sandwich at a high end bbq place, I would at a place that does only that, and does it very well.

Also I will miss those rib tips and chicken from Fargos bigly. Sigh…

I was never impressed by Fargo's, even at the old location. Brisket is always dry.

BCS continues to be a black hole for good BBQ. 1776 is the closest thing we have
Same, pre- and post-move.

They're closing because you can get equal-to-better BBQ at Rudy's, which is more affordable and easier to get to (for CS folk).

These days, bbq out, especially for a family, is too expensive to eat with much regularity.

Anywhere out is too expensive for a family. We cut our restaurant budget to zero!

Was Fargos the only African-American run BBQ place here? I only ask because they seem to represent a distinct style, esp with respect to the sauce (some places in East Texas like that gospel place come to mind). Often it's also cooking techniques and particular items like rib tips.

What's Tha Deal Bbq on Hwy 21 has very good Bbq. I really like their beans.

Can you share what and where those gas stations are?

For tacos get the Pastor at Taqueria Poblana. It's in the gas station on Boonville & Briarcrest.

Go early because they run out. And they make agua fresca out of fresh fruit not a mix

No. What's Tha Deal Bbq on Hwy 21 fits that bill and is very good.

A comment from Fargo's FB page: "Please keep us posted about the food truck."

Ok that comment has been deleted. Weird…

Hopefully they'll divulge more details, but glad to at least have a hope they'll still be around in come capacity.

Same here. While there is definitely some stiff competition around here now, they still have the best pork rib in the area, in my opinion.

Seems like other BBQ places are doing ok (C&J's), and I've been noticing business dropping off at Fargo's for some time. Had heard anecdotes about the quality slipping since the last move. In reality, who knows. Maybe the local market is BBQ saturated too?
better than okay. What's Tha Deal opened a new place on 21 out by Coulter a few months ago. I was never a big fan of Fargo's, What's Tha Deal is legit though.

I went to Fargo's once or twice. Was never impressed. I know they were in Texas Monthly but that was many years ago and at their old location.

I honestly miss Lew's/DBQ BBQ the most. Remember that place? Little red trailer on Walton Drive?

Fargo's was really good around 2012 or so. They had a peppery sausage that was great.

Hopefully lower overhead will help fargos if they go the food trailer route.

Speaking of black owned bbq locally - Mr Johnny's bbq off woodville was delicious. He was a gem to talk too! Wish he was still around!

What's the deal bbq - never been! Need to try them out. Should I try the food truck or restaurant?

- how would they rank here in the Brazos valley compared to c&j, 1775, coopers etc

I remember Lew's. He also set up at Kyle Field at lunch time during the renovation. I moved away for a few years, and he was gone when I got back.

Gonna miss that place. People say it was better before they moved to the location on TX, how so? To me they had the best ribs I've ever eaten. Brisket and sides weren't the best I've ever had, but were still very good.

I think all the food was better at the previous locations, brisket especially.

I also think part of it was the atmosphere. Their old carry out location was just one of those places that you could tell was going to be some badass barbecue. Contrast with their most recent location that had the funky stained glass light fixtures and stuff like that that really threw off the ambience. No, that didn't directly impact the taste of the food, but I thought it impacted the perception.

All this said, I loved Fargo's. Alan is one of those guys that the 15 second interaction with him as you walked in made you feel like you'd known him your whole life. I hate to see them go, and I hope they regroup and come back in another format.

Mr. Alan did say that there would be another venture. Probably a food truck. After some much needed rest.

Not many folks would have sold out on Saturday and offered to cook on Sunday. That's when we picked up ours. Ate my last rib last night for dinner

Can't wait see what he has in store, and yes he certainly deserves a rest.
