Saint Louis Cemetery in northern Grimes County recently had a Texas Historical Marker dedication ceremony and installation. There is still a portion of the cemetery, with some burial sites, in need of recovery from growth of brush and vegetation.

Wondering whether there might be someone in the Aggie network that is knowledgeable in the careful and proper manner of respectfully removing such overgrowth from a cemetery, and/or has willingness to utilize his/her physical capacity to do so.

Please respond through this thread, or email me at

I am merely a former Iola High School classmate, and lifelong friend of relatives of those currently buried in this cemetery, trying to assist my classmates in their efforts. A fellow Aggie is also a descendant/related to some interned therein.

I would call the city of Bryan and maybe the African American Museum and see who did the same with the old cemetary near the corner of Hwy 21 and hwy 6 that's on the east side of the access road going north. It was totally overgrown and they cleaned it up and put a nice fence around it.

You might want to get an estimate of the cost to do so as the first thing

Then folks know what we're looking at

Contact one of the 2 TDCJ-ID prisons in Grimes County. I believe they still do community projects. Free PR for them and I don't believe it costs anything.

Were I to do it, I'd first hit it with herbicide to kill as much junk as possible.

But it does sound like a perfect project for prisoners. Doing something selfless is good therapy.

There might be a Boy Scout troop looking for an Eagle Scout project - when I was a lot younger and in Connecticut we cleaned up a grave yard that was dated to the 1700's. A lot of trimming, weedeating and cutting and we cleaned and straightened the gravestones that we could. Uncovered a lot of buried gravestones as well and once we found the burial line they were easy enough to find.

Cleaned with water and toothbrush until the experts came along.

theres a pretty large group that just cleared the Canaan cemetery out by Rellis. Might look into that, not real sure who to contact though.

I don't think Big Event goes outside BCS city limits.

Sounds like a good Boy Scouts project

Edit-I see whoop1995 already had the same idea.

Thank you all for your responses. I have shared the link to this thread with my friends from high school so they can read your responses themselves.
I can put any who are interested in touch with them.

I wish you success in this endeavor!

Slight correction, your first link was mangled, but the unmangled URL appears to be about a different St. Louis Cemetery for the Parish of St. Louis Catholic Church in Castroville, not the one for the St. Louis Missionary Baptist Church in Iola.
