You may have seen my post about Fostering a dog this past weekend. While I got that taken care of, I am still in the situation that we have not been able to find the owners. We aren't in a position to keep this dog with our family right now. I am hesitant to take it to the shelter because I know ultimately it has a strong chance of being put down.

My buddy kept it this weekend at his house and kept telling me how good of a dog it was. I have noticed it as well. The dog has been trained some, is very mild tempered and has played with both his dog and mine which are much older than it is with zero signs of aggression. It's a good dog that deserves a good owner but again, I am afraid that's just not going to be us right now. I hate to see this dog not get a shot at a good home because it is going to be a good dog for someone.

Any thoughts? Minus the "it's a dog crowd" get rid of it etc. That's not me and not something I would entertain. The LAST draw I will do is take it to a shelter and hope that someone adopts it but I don't want to do that yet.

How much energy does it have? Does it bark a lot? How old?

He's a puppy so he has puppy energy. Wants to play. First night I kept him in my laundry room that has a dog door and he chewed a little on like the trash bag box and stuff. But hasn't done anything else since then.

He's somewhere around anyway is my guess. Vet could have a better chance at identifying than I would. Has whimpered only a handful of times, usually when I have to shut the door to keep him outside but stops pretty quickly after that.

He wants to be loved on, sits on command most of the time and doesn't shy away from contact. When I drove him back and forth to my buddies house he hopped in the backseat and laid down and rode.

Contact Urgent Animals of Hearne. We've adopted two dogs from there. They basically foster the dogs and hold adoption events around town. They're pretty good at finding them homes. And they don't put dogs down that they can't find homes for. They just stay with their fosters.

That's a good looking dog and sounds like he's even better than he looks. As mentioned above, Urgent Animals of Hearne is at least a starting point. We have adopted one from there and it was a great process. I'd bet this guy finds a home pretty quickly.

Understanding your desire to find a good home for the dog....My only advice is that if someone contacts you about interest in taking the dog....and their email prefix is KNoem....don't do it.

I called the person listed on the Facebook page but they are not accepting animals right now.

I know you posted before but I don't remember: have you checked for a microchip? Posted in the Brazos Lost/Found Pets group on Facebook? Or Nextdoor? I see a lot of lost/found animals on those sites and I haven't seen this pup.

This pup looks similar to "Tigger," a dog that was dumped in my old neighborhood many years ago. I called him Tigger because he would bounce across my and my neighbors' yards just like Tigger from Winnie the Pooh. He just showed up one day. He was also *really* interested in a neighbor's child's 4-H rabbits, so he went to Brazos Animal Shelter (that's how long ago it was).

I really hope this pup is just lost, not dumped.

My neighbor found a dog that looked well cared for. Had animal control (not in BCS) check for a microchip, didn't find one. After a month, he took it to the vet for shots and other things. He didn't want a dog, but didn't want anything bad to happen to it.

The vet scanned for a chip and found it. The dog was reunited with its elderly owner that day. It was also much further from home that expected.

Yes we had it scanned. I might take it to my vet and have them scan it again. Just in case.

I have posted on Nextdoor. Will look into posting on the Brazos Valley page as well. Thanks.

Did you find this dog in Normangee? Cause that's where you're picture is taken.

If so, have you asked in the various community Facebook groups in that area?

Yea, my wife works at the school. Some of the kids of parents played with it for like 3 days before we decided to go have it checked. It was staying at the school.

I have posted in the Nextdoor app IN Normangee, posted in the Talk of Normangee Facebook group and had multiple co workers post on their pages to find local people.

Trying to find someone around there.

Is there a local hangout/tavern/bar that people frequent? I had two pups show up at my place with no chips or collars. After trying every option I could think of I posted pics at the local bar and got a call the next day from the owner. Good luck.

No, it's not. Guy took in a stray, now, apparently it's his problem. The lesson I'm learning through all this is to not bring home strays we're not prepared to keep permanently.

Your wife can ask around at Tia's or either of the feed stores. People tend to know other's business.

Yes I still have him. I have a friend who is "debating" but he hasn't committed to taking him.

I'm at the point where I just don't see me taking him to a shelter. Will wait it out until I can get him into a no kill place or someone takes him.

My wife and I have been considering getting another dog (we have one dog who's very sweet, but starting to get a little older). We'd be interested to at least meet this puppy, if that's agreeable to you.

Hey there. So I spoke to my friend again today and it seems like he's getting more serious about taking him. I'm actually taking the dog to his current vet where he has his other dog seen tomorrow. Want to try and see if they will scan him one more time just to make sure, give him a wellness check and start him on his shots.

If for some reason my buddy backs out I'll get back with you. I really appreciate you even thinking about it.

I figured it was worth saying something. Certainly let me know if anything changes, but I hope it works out with your friend!

For those who posted and were curious, my friend has taken him. He currently has a 3 year old Catahoula/Pit (he believes) that has taken to the new dog as well. Ultimately, I had decided I wasn't going to get rid of him to a shelter and keep him as long as I needed, but couldn't be happier that he is where he is.

Thanks for all the suggestions throughout. It was really appreciated.

"What to do with a stray dog" is a question that is phrased incredibly poorly. Either adopt him as your own or take him to a shelter, both of which seemed to be nixed from the get-go. When you take out those choices, your options for "what to do with a stray" look a lot more grim.

For an example, if you look on Google, limit your search to TexAgs and "what do with" in quotes, all throughout the first page you get threads like "what do with pork stomach", "what to do with beef stew meat", "what to do with kingfish", "what to do with roasted hatch or green chilies", "what to do with beef roasts", "what to do with chili pequin", and "what to do with beef chuck short ribs". Only one of the nine threads do not have to deal with food.

Like I said, phrased very poorly.

Well I guess you'll be happy to know the dog was taken care of for two weeks before finding its new forever home so, yeah.

Okay. That's normal. All I said was the question made it sound worse than the rather mundane problem it posed.
