Seafood - Le petit Cochon's bouillabaisse or Iwon's Hot pot. Catfish or cajun is NOT seafood..

Steak - Republic but I do actually like Sodalacks

Sushi - Naked Fish

Mexican - Taqueria El Sol De Mexico - Seafood soup!

Chinese - Imperial

Korean - Ohana

Pho - Nam cafe

Pizza - Still Mr G's...

BBQ - C&J's

Soul food - Shannons Cafe on 21... Oxtails yum!!!

Asian Noodles - Twisted Noodle Cafe

Cajun - Remnant of Nawlins

If cajun cant be seafood then those definitely aren't hole's in the wall.

Burger - Overall, Koppe Bridge but I love the jalapeño cream cheese burger at Harvey Washbangers

Sushi - Blue Fin

Soul food - Lamar & Nikki's

Chicken fried steak - Marfa

Coco Loco on Welch.

Yankee's Tavern in Carlos is typically known for their burgers but their Friday catfish is the best seasoned fried fish I've ever had.

Carneys is best bar in town by a good mile IMO.

Food is also very good.

I think "hole in the wall" merits some refinement here beyond "not a chain."

My wife and I have been to Le Petite Cochon twice. The food is good, but not good enough to warrant a third trip anytime soon.

Margie's grill downtown Bryan is the best burger in town. I regret posting this because once you try it, it will be even more packed than usual.

Hullabaloo. Great portions, they make their own beer, and they're always friendly.

To me "hole in the wall" means just that. It is in an older building with worn floors, age and faded walls, single pane and old windows. Mismatched old chairs amd aged tables, etc. Maybe old brick and stone inside. Not in a shopping center...somewhat off the beaten path? Margie's, Martins BBQ, Top of the HIll, Carney's, maybe Shannons, Casa Rod, etc.

Not many of these left.

I agree. Taz, RX, and Messina Hof are not hole-in-the-wall places.

I guess Fish is gonna be its own category

Chinese: Shun de Mom Express closed their doors this week. I would not have called it a hole in the wall. The location in the old Kmart store in CS might be considered one. Best Chinese food in the county.

I didn't realize they had a second location in Northgate. I've always been to the one on Texas Avenue (definitely a hole in the wall). Sorry to hear they're closed.

When you start off asking about 'hole in the wall' and then your first listing is Le Petit Cochon...I think I have a vastly different idea of a hole in the wall. The Cow Hop was a hole in the wall. Los Nortenos was a hole in the wall.

Burger - Top of the Hill/ (while technically a chain, Mr Hamburger is pretty good)

Steak - Feed Barn

Fast Food Mexican - Pepe's

Breakfast Taco: Jesse's or Cameron Ranch Exxon

Thai - Kluay Kluay

Pizza - The Wild Garlic

BBQ - Moes (in Sommerville)

Catfish - New Baden Store

I think location was a factor for a lot of people. Not talking about distance, but "out of sight, out of mind."

When many persons think about where to eat especially lunch-time, they think University Dr and Texas Avenue from University Drive down to 2818. To me Mr. Hamburger wasn't anything special that would cause me to necessarily think if it.

That was the issue for me. It was good, but I'm not in that part of B/CS on a regular basis.

It wasn't that much better than other places for me to make a special trip across town to eat there.

The Feed Barn has burgers and chicken fried steak that are good enough that I will make a trip to go there.

Oh the Feed Barn def qualifies. First time I went with my boss he said to me "Huh…this looks like a place someone would meet to have an illicit affair in."

I recall the food being good, the folks being nice, and the place dimly lit with a kind of David Lynch feel to it.
