How did us Texans get duped into thinking indoor malls needed to be abandoned in favor of outdoor concrete hellscapes called "outlet malls"?

I can't think of a worse experience than walking between stores in the blazing sun getting drenched with sweat and then needing to try on clothes.
The problem is that malls with AC attract loiterers that are just there for the AC and don't buy anything. With the outlet malls, stores can kick the trouble-makers out and they go somewhere else instead of sitting in the heat all day. If Dillard's kicks kids out of their store, they just go hang around the public side of the mall and annoy the actual shoppers, tear stuff up, etc. Nicest indoor malls in the nicest areas of the nicest cities in the US have this problem since it's very easy to drive across town to those areas.

Last indoor mall in the US was built in 2014. Last one built before that was 2009.

Harvey Road is a dead zone as it relates to economic development. It has been for decades. It will never happen, so what I will say next is a waste of time, but all of those "old" apartment complexes from the 80's need to be razed.
Unfortunately there will be pushback to that idea. You see it in Bryan where they have been quietly buying up 80 year old decrepit houses and one or two individuals make a big stink. If you tried to raze the old apartment complexes you'd see much hand wringing about the lack of affordable housing that will result, etc. But agreed, this needs to happen.

I was in Concord, NC last week and checked out the Concord Mills Mall. I wish we had something like that. It was VERY nice and clean, and it was remarkably crowded for a Friday morning. I know, we don't have the population of Charlotte to support it.

They still hang around. At the open air outlet mall in Round Rock, they congregate in the food court if it's too hot. If it's at all seasonable, they are at the benches and other gathering places between stores.

That's an outlet mall like Katy Mills and Grapevine Mills, isn't it?

I can't imagine something like that being built here with our proximity to other outlet malls.

In the late 1990s and early 2000s, Harvey Road got lots of new development, with a new OfficeMax, Rudy's BBQ, Johnny Carino's, Kona Ranch (the latter two being owned by the same company), Fazoli's...but with some of those retailers now changed hands (Toys R Us now Ollie's, Circuit City now Guitar Center, OfficeMax now a church), and the vacancies from restaurants, that's not the same thing anymore...but you are right in that Post Oak Mall was built in a position where development never really materialized east of Highway 6 due to the massive floodplains.

Me, neither. But I can still wish we had something like it.

I spent about a year going back and forth to Charlotte / Concord for work. That mall is also propped up by the proximity to the racetrack, NASCAR hall of fame, and the Great Wolf Lodge nearby. Also, the Charlotte-Concord-Gastonia metro is about 2.7m people.

The Mills malls combined entertainment venues with other stores, and Grapevine Mills opened with a lot of big box stores as well (not exclusively outlets)--Burlington Coat Factory, Bed Bath & Beyond, and Sports Authority. Obviously, the latter two won't be happening due to them being gone (and Burlington Coat Factory has much smaller stores than what they had in the 1990s and 2000s).

There were a few malls that tried similar things, but their success had been mixed. Trying to shoehorn that into a relatively small mall like Post Oak Mall would probably even have worse results.

Would be an excellent location for the convention center. The city already owns Macy's. Lots of parking. Right off the bypass.

Honest question. It's been in the news...the Bealls (Gordmans, if only for a matter of weeks) is still vacant, the mall is now 40...and of course the Macy's building is owned by the city.

It seems like it could be better utilized, but for what, exactly? Seems like the city should coax more retail into the center of town instead of little "islands" around town....or at least use more "non-traditional" tenants like Fieldhouse USA.
I absolutely hate how malls are dying. I remember how they used to be a hangout for teens and young adults, and how going to the mall was fun and vibrant. I'm just realizing how much 2000s culture I missed out on simply because I didn't have any friends to go do those things with at the time, and how much I miss the way things used to be.

When I was a kid, my mom would drive my sister and me to Memorial City for our Christmas shopping. Having lunch at Picadilly Cafeteria was so much fun for a kid in the 1970's.

Quiptars arcade in the early 80's was the place to be. Right next to the Army recruiting store. 10 tokens for a dollar! I dominated Donkey Kong Jr. ....

I thought it was Quiptars. Remember that big carpeted sunken area? Mom would tell us to meet her at the pit in an hour or whatever. I loved that sears had the little candy counter inside. I lived at Memorial city as a teen.

Burlington is coming to CS. It's not going into the mall, though. It's taking the place of Bed, Bath, and Beyond.
