I was thinking about this because of the Christmas parade and other threads discussing businesses being hurt.

Why can't the citizens rise up and force a measure on the ballot? Pretty sure everyone votes to get rid of them, similar to how red light cameras were voted out in many municipalities.

Good luck with fighting the state.

And most places took down the red light cameras because other cities were losing lawsuits over them.

Since it is TXDOT constructing most of the medians, and given this is Texas, the proper way to address this is by getting a constitutional amendment placed on the ballot.

Only half-joking.

Maybe vote out the local elected officials that pursued this? Or the MPO?

Not quite the same situation. Ours are permanent.

But bottom line: Medians improve safety for everyone on the road even considering the u-turns made because of them.

Quit being babies about the medians. They have a purpose and there's enough traffic in this town to warrant them. You may be the perfect driver and would never cause a crash while turning left over multiple lanes, but you forget about the tens of thousands of young drivers in our area as well as the numerous incompetent townies. It's part of the price of living within proximity to other humans.

i propose collective civil disobedience

a couple 1000 of us run interference while others with heavy equipment, jack hammers, scrape and break them down flush. Have a finishing crew redo the asphalt. Just tons of cars and people between the machines doing the work and the "man" trying to keep us down!

I wonder how many businesses are losing customers and revenue that do not admit it.

I can't speak for all businesses, because I'm just a customer and my biggest complaint is the Harvey medians because that's where I normally enter off the hwy on my way to campus.

If I wanted to get donuts at Krispy Kreme or Tacos at Rudy's for my team on the way to work, I'm now stuck with no simple way to get headed back on Harvey towards Texas. For example, when you exit the Krispy Kreme parking lot and you want to head back towards Texas, you cant just U-turn at any opening/light. You pretty much have to turn around in the mall parking lot otherwise you are stuck going into neighborhoods or you end up on the other side of the highway. It's a little easier at Rudy's because there are lights where I can turn and go by the greek houses and end up on george bush (still not ideal and probably annoying to those neighborhoods). STILL NOT OK.

So that being said, it definitely reduces the temptation to stop in on the way to work and give them business.

And these are giant chains dealing with it. I know it's got to be hurting others worse.

maybe, instead, we could stop fleecing the taxpayers, enriching contractors, and preaching to adults from an ivory tower while trying to "save us from ourselves."

Medians are stupid

From roundabouts? Zero

From medians? All of them on the other side.

They aren't saving you from yourself. They're protecting drivers from other drivers. I guess we need to get rid of all roadway safety measures from the last 100 years.

It might be easier to leave the medians and add curb ramps.

What about those motorcycle-rider slicers they've installed on the interstates?

I don't feel protected when people are randomly slowing and accelerating while trying to figure out how to get where they need to be. nevermind seeing someone go into the wrong way turn-lane cut out of the medians. yikes.

Two terms come to mind: "Unintended consequences", and "Return on investment".....it's line drawing on the latter, trying to accurately describe the actual safety increases, versus the costs to businesses, and were different hazards created?

And "Unintended consequences" are a routine part of government "problem solving".

or did you, per chance, design the diamond intersection at 28818 and 60?

a "solution" to a problem that could have been resolved by a couple of protected left turn lights. Instead, we spend millions for.... what?

I wish I had. That thing is a lot of fun. I appreciate how it prioritizes turning traffic which I think constitutes the majority of vehicles coming through it.

I do not like the medians - not easy to see in the dark, by the time you see the intersection you are past the cut out.

Last night I traveled from north Bryan to mid-CS and watch 4 cars try to make u turns. The first one not making it in one try I could understand since it was a large Ford. It simply did not have the turning radius. But the other 3 were not large trucks - I think some of the medians are too far into the intersection to make an easy U turn. Lots of curb scraping going on.

That might be true for limited parts of the day, but not true for the much of the day. Lots of Hwy 47 & FM60 traffic. It is/was overkill, for a resolution of previous problems. TX DoT never tried reduced speed limits, or closing the idiotic exit, that required turning (no light) across traffic.

There's a big No U-turn sign on eastbound Boonville at Austin's Colony Parkway. People still make u-turns there all the time.

Roundabouts are great because they keep accidents down. They put them in areas where people run stop signs most often. The medians will go away eventually. We just have to rise up collectively and fight it.

These medians are going in all over the state under the guise of safety. However, after the install in my town, the idiocy that occurs with u-turns if off the charts. I can't imagine how it will be with a bunch of college students in the mix.

The environmental argument....

People now have to drive additional miles to reach their destination. Collectively, I am sure it is a staggering number. The environmental impact from the massive increase in greenhouse gas emissions will cause ecological collapse in the next 10 years.

Those medians are there so that other drivers have a lower chance of taking you out while they're texting from the driver seat of their Suburban rolling down the opposite side of the road. Be thankful.

Shouldn't happen often. All the ones in town have Opticom systems that turn the traffic light green in the direction they're headed.

I wish we had driver education matching what you can find in parts of Europe. It's normal there to pull to the outsides of the road in stopped traffic for emergency vehicles to have a path.
