My son is freshman engineering major. Currently living on campus and looking to move off campus. Although he and his roommates are conducting a search on their own, their search isn't necessarily grounded in reality so I want to educate myself.

I have recommended they look at apartments due to amenities and proximity to bus routes.

I've looked around a little, but it has only consisted of looking up properties that I recognize by name and location. So my searches haven't been very fruitful. We're looking at $700-800 per month budget if possible. Is an AgShacks type place accessible at that budget? Any apartment properties specifically I should look into?

I've heard good things about uCentre or the Rise, but it looks like we are priced out of those places. I don't really want him living in the places I lived when I was a student bc they weren't nice in the late 90s and they're even less nice now.

My kid stays at the apartments above world of beers at Texas and university and it fits your price range. Within walking distance and on bus route.
I collect ticket stubs! looking for a 1944 orange bowl and 1981 independence bowl ticket stub as well as Aggie vs tu stubs - 1926 and below, 1935-1937, 1939-1944, 1946-1948, 1950, 1953, 1956-1957, 1959, 1960, 1963-1966, 1969-1970, 1973, 1974, 1980, 1984, 1990, 2004, 2008, 2010

You should be able to find something easily because of people flunking out, moving on, etc. Lots of apartments around Holleman.

Check out the woodlands, they have bigger rooms than most of the apartment places and were a good balance of reasonable price/amenities for me. Currently in a duplex with my own yard which I much prefer but it's further from campus.

Edit: the traffic off of 2818 by the cottages/junction is horrendous and would avoid if at all possible

If I was looking, I would look at the rentals back behind La Quinta off of Univ and Nimitz street all the way down to behind the new city hall. . Close enough to take the bus, ride a bike, or walk to Zackery and the other engineering buildings and a couple of dozen restaurants.

We used Aggieland Apartment Finders when we were looking at student housing. They really are free with no catch. They get paid by the people where you sign a lease.

We told them the budget and they did the work. Just took us on a couple of tours of houses that were in our budget.

Easy.

How many students?

We used the Stack one year. It was around $900, but that includes everything. Utilities, basic cable, internet, etc...
I think that we paid an extra $20 / month to get covered parking.

I would avoid anything on or near 2818, traffic is a nightmare.
My daughter lives at the Standard, it's $800 including parking, utilities are like $25 a month.
I'd rate it 4 out of 5.

He got really embarrassed when I asked him what the charge was for a keg line up to the room.

No different than living behind Northgate back in the day, except the beer was a lot cheaper.

I've got a 2/2.5 condo available early February at Dartmouth and Harvey at the Woodbrook Condominiums.
