I moved to Castlegate this summer and the mosquitos at my house are BAD. Mosquito Joe has come out twice but no real difference. Does anyone else in Castlegate have this problem?

I live in Castlegate II and no problem here, but mosquito's tend to not like me. Truth and a blessing. Make sure you have no standing water around your property.

They've been pretty bad in our backyard this summer in Castlegate. Been fogging once a week and it seems to help a bit.

I live in Castlegate and the mosquitos are terrible. We do back up to green space with a creek though. They were pretty non existent until the rains last month. I also remember them being really bad early last summer when we had frequent rains as well.

We are new to Castlegate as well and the mosquito problem is extreme. We have been working hard to clear out some of the brush (yaupon, etc) and ensuring we have good drainage everywhere. It has gotten better, but we also back to a greenspace and creek. Next is to clean up that area, but waiting for the mosquitos to clear so I can survive.

Permithren 36.8% or higher (not the 10%). Mix as directed in a 1 or 2 gallon pump sprayer and follow directions. Tends to work well for about 3 weeks. Keeping up with around your porches will help a lot with keeping them out of the house.

Unfortunately you're also at the mercy of neighbors directly around you being as diligent of preventing mosquitoes from breeding and/or hanging around. You can have a well treated yard but if there's a source 5 ft over the fence they'll still fly over and get you.
Over watering of yards with standing or saturated areas are a big culprit. Poorly designed yard/french drain, gutter flex tubes can hold water esp if not angled downward the whole way. Really any item at all (in ground/above ground) capable of holding water in the yard can breed mosquitoes. The list can be extensive when you really look around hard.. A bottlecap of water is enough. Whether kept filled by rain or regular sprinkler use.
Dirty plugged up gutters that won't let water drain onto the down spouts is a culprit during rainy times. HTH.

Take a trip down to Clute, home of the Great Texas Mosquito Festival! Their mascot is a 20' inflatable mosquito named Willie Manchew.

When you return to Castlegate you will realize the mosquito population here is pretty sparse.

Is this available locally? I normally hesitate to spray poison in our back yard as we have dogs and some sensitive landscaping but we are getting eaten alive this year. Never had mosquitos this bad - we can't even go outside right now. We're in Woodlake, and on the lake, so I get it, but this is ridiculous.

The weaker stuff is at Tractor Supply for sure. Might have to go to Amazon or one of the DIY pest control sites for the stronger stuff.

Be careful with Permetherin, I would wear non absorbent gloves. We use it in the 5% cream for scabies. 36% is pretty strong and can lead to nerve irritation with extended contact.

This site is a great resource and place to buy pesticides from.

I use Bifen XTS with NyGaurd IGR in my yard. Once bifen dries, it is ok for pets to be around it. Permethrin does not work as well in the yard. Most people use that to treat clothing, tents, and other fabrics.

Bifen IT mixed with Pivot 10 IGR. Spray about 3 gallons of finished mix per 1000 square feet on lawn, bushes, & shrubs. Repeat about once a month to to stay mosquito free.

Mosquito are bad everywhere. Quit spraying pesticides and deal with it. You are not only killing mosquitos, you are killing every other creature that pollenates our plants. The next thing you'll gripe about about is that you can't find any honey.

Getting closer to that time of year again. Has anyone used a mosquito misting system in their yard? Does it help? Would you recommend based on the effectiveness/cost?

We spend a lot of time outside in the summer and am just trying to find some solutions that help with the mosquito infestation.

I researched some of the advice earlier in this thread. Thanks in advance.

Get the Spartan Mosquito control product. I've used it for 4 years and can't say enough about it's efficacy when used the entire season. Producers used to carry them - may still. I just get online.

Are you talking about the orange and black tubes you fill with water and hang around the perimeter of your property?

Reporting back. We have an acre and I deployed four Spartan tubes about three weeks ago. We have seen very few mosquitos - so they seem to be working well. You have to place the tubes at least 80 feet from where you normally gather. So far we are very happy - my wife can actually be outside after work now without getting eaten live like last year.

Unless mosquitos are just not bad yet? Is everyone else seeing a normal number of mosquitos?

Bump. What's your mosquito situation? I'm ordering a new set of Spartan to replace the ones I put up a month ago. So far we're happy but it's hard to know if they are working or if the population just hasn't amped up yet. Seems like with all the rain there should be more...

I had one mosquito bite this week with a fair amount of time outside. Certainly not widespread, and I have some spartan tubes ready to go once they start ramping up

I've got four more tubes ready but I think I'll wait until we see an increase before I deploy them. So far we are not seeing many at all. I was hoping it was the Spartan but based on the lack of interest in this thread I'm guessing they are just not out in force yet.

Just FYI…you don't have to buy new ones every time. Look up refill formulas. My husband makes his own now and just uses the tubes. Much cheaper.

Is this still a big issue? Looking at a couple of houses that backup to a retention pond on the west side of Castlegate II, but mosquitos were my first thought. I noticed it was mentioned in some HOA notes that were available online in 2020, but I never saw if there was a solution to resolve the issue.

For us it has depended on the year. A couple of summers ago it was not bad until late in the summer/early fall. Then this summer we have struggled with them all summer long. In fact, I am still seeing some mosquitos because it has continued to be so warm. I have done just about everything but put in a misting system and nothing seems to help when they are bad.

In would be better to go get some mesquite dunks and cut into pieces and put in any standing water areas that you see around in your yard and out into the green space. The dunks do not harm other insects or animals.

Same here near Lyons. Mosquitos have been worse than I have ever seen here, even during the dry months. I have donated dunks and asked my neighbors with unused/half full above ground pools to please place them in their pools or better yet drain them! I looked at their pools and didnt see any wigglers but they're coming from somewhere!!!

This last year I used Backyard Comfort and Pest Control and it really worked. They will do the first spray for free and you can arrange for which months you want them to come out. If it is raining they will reschedule. I also used their Inzecto traps and the combination did the job.
