KBTX : COLLEGE STATION, Tex. (KBTX)-

The following is a news release from the Texas Department of Transportation:

Beginning Tuesday, October 16, 2018, the Texas Department of Transportation will have outside lane closures for both directions of Texas Avenue in College Station between FM 2818 (Harvey Mitchell Parkway) and Deacon Drive. These closures are necessary to install raised medians and turn lane improvements within this section to enhance safety. TxDOT reminds motorists who travel through this area to obey all warning signs, watch for workers and equipment, expect some delays, and drive safely.

This $1.1 million project is contracted to Knife River Corporation-South. This work is anticipated to be complete in the Spring of 2019. TxDOT and their contractor thank everyone for their patience.

Long expected and necessary, bad timing though.

When would the timing be good? At least it'll maybe be done by the time the students leave to make summer easy sailing down Texas Ave.

Improvements are good, but odds are good that the TX Avenue exit from Hwy 6 will back up onto the highway at times. Be safe out there

Not everywhere needs raised medians.

I'd suspect that this is to alleviate the wrecks at the Wally World entrance.

For the police officers. If a school bus has its flashing lights on and is stopped on the opposite of a road with a raised median, does oncoming traffic have to stop?

No. See Texas Transportation Code 545.066

Snip

(f) For the purposes of this section:

(1) a highway is considered to have separate roadways only if the highway has roadways separated by an intervening space on which operation of vehicles is not permitted, a physical barrier, or a clearly indicated dividing section constructed to impede vehicular traffic; and

(2) a highway is not considered to have separate roadways if the highway has roadways separated only by a left turn lane.

No. Which, given that they are putting in a raised median and no real barrier, is quite scary. I foresee kids running across Texas getting dropped off through there, and it being completely legal to keep on driving on the other side if the flashing lights are on.

Why would kids cross two opposite lanes of traffic, a turn lane, and one more lane to get to a bus? Seems kind of silly to stop all 4 lanes

The school bus stops for those trailer parks on that section. Currently with no raised medians you have to stop for a stopped school bus with flashing lights if you are on other side of road as the school bus.

I am pretty sure the bus stops on the side wherr the trailer park is so kids do not have to cross

I asked the question because a friend of ours did get a.ticket for.not stopping for the bus when she was heading south on Texas and the bus was on the other side going north. Was curious if that would stl warrant drivers stopping if there were raised medians.

If people didn't drive down left-turn-only lanes or make right turns out of them to merge into traffic, they wouldn't install raised medians. Not TxDOTs fault people are too stupid to follow the law.

yep.. in today's society, if "people aren't protected from themselves by the government" then they will sue the city if they get into an accident because it was "preventable" if only they had raised the medians in that section just like they did on the rest of Texas Avenue.

I think that, to be very honest with you, I do believe that we should have rightly believed, but we certainly believe that certain issues are just settled.

Unfortunately in today's society we must always cave to the lowest common denominator. (in this case stupid drivers).
