Slow Suddenlink Internet ... Haven't Changed Anything

How long do you want to ignore this user?
Over the past week, my internet has just totally gone down the tubes. I haven't changed any equipment or reset anything on my computers or tablets.

Trying to watch Netflix on Apple TV is excruciating now. It just keeps stopping ALL the time. YouTube is super slow, as is downloading (I'm downloading a PDF right now and it's taking forever).

Here are my speeds:
PING 31 MS
Download 18.74
Upload 14.62

I pay for the top of the line Suddenlink because I use my computer for work. Are these speeds OK and if so, why am I having these problems all of a sudden?

TIA!!!!

Our internet was horribly slow at home for as long as I can remember. I finally got a tech to come out and he checked all the lines inside and couldn't find a problem. He finally climbed the pole out back and found that the connector going to the house was fried (like struck by lightning fried). He replaced it and it's been great ever since.

Your down numbers are not good.

What speed are you paying for?

Your ping rate seems high. should be around 10 ish?

Assuming you have 50mbps service you should be getting near 50 mbps down

If you have 100 mbps service you should be getting near 100 mbps down

The up is great. Suddenlink only promises 7.5 mbps up

Try resetting your modem first.

Your numbers, while not ideal, are more than enough for any streaming service. Your bottleneck is most likely your WiFi in house. This can change all of the sudden if another neighbor introduces a WiFi access point that might be on the same channel as yours.

If you can, get into your wifi settings on your access point (router) and see if your channel negotiation is set to auto. If not it should be either 1, 6 or 11 at 20mhz. If if is not auto and is on either 1, 6 or 11, simply change it to one of the others and try again.

When doing speedtests, always test plugged in as WiFi is inherently inefficient and fickle.

The first step is buying your own router and modem. Make sure you have a Docsis 3 capable modem; if you do not have this, you won't get the fastest speeds your level of service affords.

After you've purchased the devices, call Suddenlink and have them provision it. This is a simple process they'll be able to walk you through.

If, after that, you still have issues, you need a tech to come out to your house and assess your lines.

We have our own router and modem (the modem that is one of two that SuddenLink says will work so I know it's a good one). We haven't changed any of our equipment and are just suddenly having this issue.

It sounds like I need to call SL and ask about our speeds and then look into talking with NetGear about the router ... because I have nothing else to do with my time!

Thanks, everyone!

Ping seems high.
Mine is usually in the 9-11 range
What service are you paying for ?
100 mb?
What router brand and model are you running ?

Have you tried unplugging the router and modem to reset them ?
I have 100 mb service and my wifi never got over 50-55 mb until I upgraded my router and now it is consistently 97-110 mb.

I bought a wifi range extender from Best Buy and it made a huge difference with my Suddenlink. Where I couldn't download Nexflix or Amazon is speedy now!

My Suddenlink internet has been acting up tonight. Normally don't have any issues.

Maybe something's stuck in a pipe somewhere (hyperbole - I'm really not educated enough about internet infrastructure to assume why).

I would test your speeds using a computer connected with a LAN wire directly to your cable modem. If the speeds are still slow, it is an issue with your cable modem or a Suddenlink issue. If the speeds are fast on the computer then you have a wireless issue related to your router.

This will at least help identify where the issue is. We had an issue with our wireless router recently that was causing all the wifi connection to suddenly be really slow. I switched wifi channels on the router and it fixed the issue.
