I don't know all of the "facts" surrounding this situation, and I'm pretty sure most on here don't either.
There seems to be a lot of speculation along with some partial "facts". One thing I know for a fact is that, by state law, board agendas are made public 72 hours prior to board meetings. If any board members were "blindsided", it would only be due to their lack of diligence in doing their job.

Saw this brought up on Facebook and one of board members posted photo of the agenda. It didn't say anything about renewal of coach's contract. It said something along the lines of "Discuss renewal of expiring contracts for administrators"

Could it have anything to do with the fact that there is a no homework policy in effect in Navasota and the people are seeing the effects of "dumbing" down academics so as to make sure all of the athletes are eligible. This has worked for the past few years but now parents are starting to see the effect it had on their kids who are trying to compete with others across the state i applying for entrance to higher education schools. Seems like it has caught up with Navasota and some parnets actually seem to be more concerned with education than athletics.

Here are some selected things written by a newer school board member:

Another good example is the "review and consider for approval of the bills paid" section of our monthly school board meetings. When I came on board in May, board members received the bills paid on Friday afternoon. The deadline to turn in a question on a bill is Thursday at noon. That's correct; we were getting the list of bills paid after the deadline to question anything. I was actually chastised by another board member for asking questions about some bills paid. I didn't back down. If you care to look at my record I have voted numerous times to not approve of the bills paid because I believe our Superintendent is abusing his position and wasting tax payer money.

and

At Monday night's regular school board meeting, I was blindsided. Although it was included on the agenda in a generic way, I had no idea that we were going to have to act in the manner that was put to the board. This is another example of the lack of communication that our Superintendent relates to the board. If we are going to act on a half a million dollars worth of salaries, I would have liked a little more heads up. Thank you Linda Meekins McClain for noting this in an earlier post yesterday. This is why I and the majority of the board members failed to act on Coach Fedora's contract extension. I knew that his contract was intact through June of 2017. Sixteen months from now. Like every decision I have made since being elected to the board, I want to make an informed and deliberate decision on everything we vote on.

The ensuing circus on social media that happened yesterday is not by accident. There are those who sit on the sidelines and launch continual personal attacks because they have lost any reason for their argument. The navasotaexaminer.com had an erroneous headline that read "Board of Trustees votes to not offer extension on Fedora's contract". False, there was no vote. The motion failed for a lack of a second. There is a huge difference. This will come before the board again. We board members all know this.

and more;

I'm down on the field blowing up the run thru helmet and I take my turn in the concession stand. Don't you dare question my loyalty to Navasota Football and our school district. At a time when parents were pulling out and leaving, I ran for school board because I care about this district and I want only what is best for our kids. That means academically, athletically and economically. If this means I need to take a thorough look at things before we act then that's what I will do. Otherwise I'm just another "rubber stamp".

When you are not sure what an agenda item is, you email, call, etc, to get some clarification. This is called showing up prepared. There is also no time limit on a meeting. If you have questions, get them cleared up. Have rich discussion. Then take care of business. I am curious what info the board was given between the two meetings that cleared things up? Especially since they can't meet outside a public meeting with a quorum? Bottom line, this is just a backtracking excuse. If you believe this "blindsided" excuse, you just want to believe it.
I have served 2 terms on a school board. I understand very well how a board works. Administrator contracts are 2 year term contracts that renew annually. Trust me, to even insinuate that your successful football coach might not be renewed for another 2 years is an intentional shot across the bow. It would be insulting to an assistant principal.

I dont think the motion was for a "renewal" of Fedora's contract. It was for a 1 year extension.

I have never served on a school board, but is that how it works for all administrators? They get 2 year contracts but every year the contract is extended for 1 year? If so are the extensions given 6 months in to the 2 year term??

Former NISD teacher, here. Cubbies 25 is on the right track. NISD is also on a 9-week grading cycle which means athletes have 3 more weeks of playing time before grades take them off the roster. I'd bet NISD is looking at going to a 6-week cycle to better monitor progress of students........

He dids say he would like to stay in Texas close to his elderly father. I wish Sumlin would bring him aboard as Director of High School Relations or something along those lines.

I do think a college position makes the most sense at this point.

Like Sinuso, former NISD teacher here. I cannot speak to Coach Fedora as a person...we never interacted. My football player students loved and respected him...and I always liked that. But at the same time, there was some pressure to pass football players (that is not unique to NHS, I know) and the focus on the football team was way higher than everything else (also not unique to NHS). The players know that and some of their attitudes in class show they know football allows them cut corners. When all of that is going on in addition to really poor academics overall, it is harder to swallow. It leads to a really divided student body, faculty, and community members.

Bottom line, I hope NISD can find a great coach to replace Fedora, hope Fedora finds a great place to impact more young men...and I also hope the school/town culture can balance their love for football with an equally passionate desire to improve academics.

Schools on a 9 week schedule must still do a grade check the 6th week of the first 9 weeks for eligibility. This is done by UIL to prevent school from having an advantage between /schools on 6 & 9 week schedules.

So football teams in 9 week schedule get checked on wee 6 and week 9. Schools on 6 weeks get checked 6 and 12. Advantage for school on a 6 week schedule.
