What's the of the place in "west gate"? I really enjoyed their touffe on grits. Pretty awesome.

I am not a huge fan of shipwreck. Seems to me that it's not what it could be.

We went for lunch yesterday after noticing on Saturday night that they are open 11-3 Sunday.

I had the chicken and sausage gumbo. Very good, right amount of spice. I would have liked more bread, but my wife shared hers. I didn't ask for more. Comes with potato salad which is amazing!

Wife had red beans and rice. She said it was very good and would have gone back for dinner if they had been open. Also served with potato salad. She is a potato salad snob and said it was the best that she had tasted in a while.

Ordered catfish basket for the boys. The breading was a little spicy for them, but the wife and I love the pieces we sampled. Once I removed the breading, they ate every bite.

We also ordered the hush puppies which were a little spicy for the boys so I regretfully had to eat theirs. Dipping sauce was really good.

We can't wait to go back and try something else.

I know that serving sizes have been mentioned but honestly it was enough for me and I'm not a man with a small appetite. I wanted more, but I would have been full.

Got to meet "Rhino" and he was very nice, talking to most every table. Wait staff was friendly and helpful. Best part was being told that the goal is for every time you come back to be a little better than the last.

This place was great. We went on Saturday night for crawfish, and ended up staying until the end of the Kentucky game. We also had the boudin balls and the crab fingers, and everything had just the right amount of spice. I have spent a decent amount of my days in South Louisiana, and this place is the real deal. I look forward to going back and try more things on the menu. The roast beef poboy with debris gravy is calling my name!

Good to great food, but I'm a big eater and portions are way too small.

We tried to go Friday night but the line was out the door and I couldn't tell where the people even in line were going to sit - every table was taken and all the porch space, and lots of people eating crawfish that didn't look like they were leaving any time soon. Regrettably we moved on, but I'm looking forward to trying it as soon as we can find a less busy night.

Maybe they need to have a "lunch" portion and a "dinner" portion of some of their dishes - a few dollars more than the current price for more food?

Really like the layout of the place. Pay up front then seat yourself.
Flavor of the food was fantastic! However, the portion size was not. The seafood gumbo was the best I've had.

Went tonight and took the kids. Portions were small. Spent $70 for two fish and shrimp baskets, crawfish tails and some gator bites. The fish in the baskets were bits not a filet and there were only 3 of them. They were the size of chicken nuggets. Tasted ok but was not expecting it to be that pricey.

AgTrip,
I'd like to personally invite you back to my restaurant to allow me to make things right. This is an obvious mistake on our part and for that I apologize. I have quality controls in effect which were not adhered to. I will fix these issues and continue to strive to my goal of getting a little better each day. Please accept my apologies and allow me the opportunity to better serve you as deserved and expected. Thank you for your patience. "Gig Dat!"

Now, I'm a yankee from Bossier Parish, but I look forward to trying it out.
.............and I am a yankee from Natchitoches and Webster Parish. The dusting thing is not just Texas. My sister and brother-in-law own a crawfish restaurant in Minden, LA. They have been in business since 1992 and have always dusted the crawfish. I know, I have dropped many a bag in the pot helping out. Once boiled the crawfish are dumped into a large oval washtub, dusted, and then stirred with a boat paddle. Check out their website at www.crawfishhole2.com . They have won several awards and recognized by local area newspapers. If I could get the picture posting thing down I would put a few on here.

I have not tried the local restaurant here in CS, but I will very soon.

Tried it this past weekend and was very pleased. A combo basket with gumbo for under $10 is not a disappointment. The food was tasty, fresh and appropriately portioned for me, so I was happy. The seasoning was just right on the crawfish, catfish and shrimp. The gumbo had a really nice kick to it, which was perfect.

Our only "comment" would be that the crawfish were a little soft, but I know the place was slammed before we got there and I suspect they had been prepared earlier and had been sitting a little while. Again, the flavor was excellent and we thoroughly enjoyed them.

I live south, so this is a really welcome addition to the area. I will be back . . .again and again.

Went back today. Tip - they do not start serving crawfish until 6 pm. I assumed they served it all day.

Tried it tonight for 1st time.
Crawfish were ok.. But they don't sit in soaking pot very long, the head end was bone dry with no juice in em whatsoever.

Beer wasn't very cold.. Sit in a display freezer. , crank that thing down a bit.

Kicker for me however was spending close to $90 for 3 adults and 2 kids under age of 10 and I asked for a side of dipping butter and was told it would be an extra charge... Come on now.. Really?

Other than that it was great.
Staff was very friendly , place was clean even though it was packed, they really did a nice job on the interior.
Boudin balls were excellent.

I think this place will stick around longer than the last few tenants of that building lasted.

The food was great but I was also a bit taken aback when I asked for an couple of extra sauce. Its not like they give you a nice big portion, its just the little plastic cup. She told me the extras were 25cents EACH and I asked for a couple. She brought me a couple of em and said that'll be 54cents !! I pulled out 2 quarters ( all the change I had), gave em to her and she just stood there. I actually had to take the quarters back give her a dollar and she brought me the change WITH a receipt for 54 CENTS ! I thought the entire thing was a bit bizarre ! Had to laugh but it did take a bit away from a great bunch of food.
Def will go back..the gumbo was very very good....but I will NOT ask for extra sauce again !!!

Meh. New business trying to make it. Can't blame 'em.

I don't see any people complaining about how much grocery prices have gone up over the last few years. And, that's probably set you back a lot more. But, by golly, charge me a quarter for more sauce and this means war.

I've never understood why some people have an issue with paying for extras at restaurants. It seems unfairly unique to the industry.

When you fill up gas do you expect a comped 1/2 gallon or pack of gum for example?

Food costs $ just like anything else

Price the quarter into the menu.

Then everybody pays instead of the just the people who want it. Pros and cons both ways

We have eaten there multiple times and will continue to do so. I did not get an extra sauces, but saw the sign indicating they charge for them. I did find it odd that a restaurant in this price-point was charging for extra sauce. Seems like a fast food restaurant move.

Outstanding!
Their rules are a bit stupid but the food and the service is excellent.

Very few places charge extra for any sauce or other condiments. If I was the owner I would look at the number of persons requesting more sauce. If the percentage is high it would indicate that the amount that comes with the meal is not adequate for the food quantity served. If it just a very small percentage, I would give it free.

If it was a small percentage the cost of giving a few more small portions is probably way less cost than have disgruntled customers that may or may not go back.

To me it would be like being charge when asking for more gravy to put on a CFS or more hot sauces at a Mexican restaurant.

Add ten cents to the cost of the meal up front and give it out. A $90 table is a non-brainer if the table wants a few more sauce containers.

I love that place and have been there five or six times, but I think the portion of gumbo needs to be more for the cost...but I am a big eater and love the food.

SPOT ON! I hope the owner read your post. I love the food but have gone other places when I have a large out of town crowd cause I don't want to have to listen to the " you gotta be kidding" chorus from my sauce loving friends.
The eaterie world is just far far too competitive for silly foolishness like his "rule" to mess up great food.
As good as his food is there are other less rigid eateries in town.

It has been slower lately but same for every other restaurant in BCS over the summer. I imagine the end of crawfish season has something to do with it to it. Great food though. They'll be fine.

The wife and I ate there this evening for the first time. We arrived at 6pm and by the time we left there were no empty tables inside. The service was fast in my opinion, the portions were excellent, and there was plenty of meat in our gumbo. We both left full.

This is the real deal cajun food too. We're both from SWLA, and this is as close to our home cooking as we've found in BCS. Looking forward to many return visits.

Had dinner last night as well. The place was full but service was excellent. The owner was coming through the dining room and chatting with the folks at every table. I asked for another container of their Cajun tarter sauce and was given it without being asked to pay extra. The gumbo is the best in town!
