How long do you want to ignore this user?
Just curious how many others have received notification that they have gone over on their data usage and been billed $40 ?

I started monitoring it pretty closely over the last couple of months and I am noticing that on days when I am not even home and nothing is connected data usage is still in the Gigs. Nothing is streamed outside of my home network. No devices are connected to unless I am on my home network. My router even tells me how much traffic comes in or goes out to the internet and it doesn't match what they claim by A LOT!

I'm starting to think somebody built out a service (100GB) and nobody is buying so they are trying to force people on to it. I have gotten more than one message telling me that for ONLY $10 a month I could upgrade and my cap would increase.

Something smells rotten here.

And they're wondering why nobody is buying when google has already set their price point for symmetrical gigabit internet with no caps at $70 a month. Why would anyone want to pay almost twice as much for only 550GB of bandwidth?

Switch to a commercial account. It's totally worth it to never see another overage charge. And it's cheaper.

How much are you paying for commercial and what speed? I've heard different rates so I'm curious from someone that actually has it.

I pay $70 per month with 50 mbps and no data cap. With the data cap, we were regularly getting hit with up to $40 in overages at the 75 mbps level so it's cheaper for us to go commercial.

The first time we got hit with the overage we assumed it was us because we were getting caught up on a show on Netflix. However, since then we have been monitoring our usage every day and you can see what they show on their site and they don't really match up. Im talking on the order of 3GB on a day the router showing we used and Suddenlink claims 13GB on the same day. Its ludicrous how much over it is and when I know nothing is streaming and I see that kind of usage I call B.S. The final straw was them showing 7GB when no one was home and everything was off for a day. I did this on purpose to test them, not me.

At the 50Gigabit plan I could use 8 Gigabyes of data a day with no overages. I see what I am using and its far below that but they claim so much more.

I suggest others check their website on your account and check their internet usage. Its under "My Account" and then "Go To My Service Details" Finally its under "Internet Usage" You can see what they say you used each day during your billing cycle. Then compare to days you know you are gone and/or nothing was on and see how they fair for you!

I switched to the commercial Suddenlink too. $75 with taxes. No overages, which works great with 3 kids in the house all using data. You don't actually have to have a business to have the commercial account. Just tell them that you want to switch. Don't disconnect your residential until the commercial service is set up.

So how does this affect your TV service with them? Doesn't it go commercial to and then the price is sky high? I don't need to pay more money, I just need them to be HONEST about consumption and we won't have a problem :/

No, you just unbundle it from your internet. We actually switched to DirectTV at the same time that we switched to commercial because I was tired of paying that much and not getting the channels I wanted but I know they offered to sell me just the tv package.

I don't have cable and we stream everything at my house. We upgraded to the 1 gbps speed mostly for increased data, which is 550 GB, but suddenlink also offers extra data packages up to an additional 750 GB. I purchased an additional 650 GB. At 1.2 TB a month, I'm pretty safe from going over. The things that eat my data up the most are the Nest cameras I have around the house. They are recording at 1080p all the time.

If you have wireless someone could be piggy backing. I'd check the connected devices list and change the password to something long.

Some routers show usage breakdown by device. Some routers that don't can be flashed with new firmware that does.

While you are gone you could unplug the ethernet cable from the cable modem and turn off any integrated wireless function just to be 100% sure nothing is using it. You could leave the coax and power plugged in to the modem itself so it still has a signal. If you do this, please post the result.

That won't happen until they have some legit competition. Until then, they'll treat customers like crap because they have the monopoly.

Didn't know about the commercial option, so that's good to know for future. Though I'm trying avoid giving them business for as long as I can.

I switched to Wirestar for the same reason. They have no data caps at all and my bill is about 48 after tax

I just spoke with Suddenlink and was told the lowest commercial plan available was the 200/20 at $134.95. How long ago did everyone receive the 50MB/s @ $75 + tax?

I switched in April. Maybe too many of us were doing that.

I switched to commercial last month and got 50Mb for something like $79/month.

Your upload data counts against the total used as well. The business plan isn't worth it unless you can't get 50M residential internet. We signed up for 50M internet at $35 a month but didn't receive that price, now they wont fix my pricing or prorate me the time I've been paying overages. Their customer service is junk, their internet isn't delivered at the speed they sell, and the tv guide is the worst in the history of worst tv guides ever.

Verizon DSL is better all around except the speeds are low.

Uverse, Fios, Google. . .any competition would be better than suddenlink.

I was never dishapointed, but I feel suddenlink disconnected.

So we had the basic plan, 250gb per month. No cable through suddenlink just internet. We did receive the notices that we've gone over the allocated monthly amount, 2 months in a row. The notice said if we go over a 3rd time we would be charged $10 for an additional 50gb.

Looking at the data usage graph we used 277gb and then 312gb.

We upgraded to the 350gb plan for $8 more per month.

The 350gb plan also comes with 100mb speed. The strange this is, when we had the 250gb plan we had 50mb speed and our internet was so-so. Since upgrading to the 100mb we do a speed test and are receiving 6-12mb speed.

So we called Suddenlink, they pushed some magic button and we received 95mb speed. That lasted about 4 hours, then it was back to 6mb.

We did the usual, reset the PC, unplugged and rest modem and router,etc..etc... still only could get around 6-12mb speed.

Called Suddenlink back, they pressed a magic button and boom 97mb speed. We still thought this was strange so they said they could send a technician out.

The awesome news is, we called Sunday night around 9pm and the technician arrived this morning at 7:45am. Talk about prompt service! :-)

He said we had a "trap" on the line, he said it was something on the telephone pole that was supposed to be removed in June but a lot of them were missed.

So he took this "trap" off the telephone line and since we've had 90+mb speed.

I'm writing this b/c I hear a lot of negative about Suddenlink, I would say this has been a very positive experience, the service technician was prompt, professional, and it made sense what he did.

I did ask and he wasn't sure, but I'm still not clear as to why our data usage graph spikes so much. We use the same PC and t.v. (sling or hulu) pretty much each day and our usage chart will vary from day to day, something like 5gb one day then 38gb the next day and then back to 2 gb the following day. Each day we watch the same amount of t.v., don't download songs or games, or anything else. We have a password on our wireless internet and it shows only our devices, so we aren't sure why it goes up and down so drastically from day to day.

I've found that if I'm watching sling on my roku and if I forget to hit the home button when I'm done, it will keep streaming overnight and my daily usage will be in the 30-50GB range.

Some shows have HD available while others do not. Depending on the device and your settings it may be streaming HD content when available, which could account for the variance. I have found that I had to lower my content settings in order to stay within my allotment, even on modest watching.

I would like to hear more about the traps. They put these up all over town and only took some down? Anyone from Suddenlink care to comment?

Line traps are essentially bandpass filters which is how Suddenlink (and most cable providers) used to control access to television services versus those who had only Internet services, or in the really olden days how they limited certain customers to only certain channels. The filter would block frequencies that carried channels that were not purchased.

Now, with the switch to encrypted digital, all channels on the line are open and access is digitally controlled rather than filtered directly. Unfortunately this means they need to remove all of the filters they installed over the years to allow every customer to have full access at all times and upgrade/downgrade capability at a phonecall away versus a truck roll.

I've had many experiences with their technicians... some good, some not so good. Always professional.

I've had them come to my house, say everything was fine after hooking up their tester. Then say they are going to check the connection to the box in the yard behind ours after seeing the problem on my TV. After they left after a little while my problems were gone and he came back to the door and said they replaced the connection. I was happy until I got the bill for that month and they charged me $100 for an "in home" repair. When I called they said there was no in home repair they finally said "Well, thats what he wrote down".....

Again more "trust me" because the bill is right

DSL also comes with NO limits and is the same cost and/or cheaper. I won't get 100MB but I sure don't all the time with the cable modem. Further I will ALWAYS get the bandwidth I am supposed to.

In response to the "traps" the Suddenlink tech did say they had contracted out with a company to remove them all but some were missed. He hinted that "some" may be a loose term.

Since they came out on Monday our internet has been pretty fast on the speedtest.net one day it did get down to around 15mbs. We shut the PC off and unplugged the modem for a few minutes then started everything back up, since then it's been 85+ (knock on wood).

They don't need to be worried when they are literally the only option for cable in the inner BCS area. Good ole monopoly...

I so dearly wish we had google fiber here. I would pay more for the same speed just so I don't have to pay suddenlink anymore.

There's some news about another option:

I've been using them for residential copper, but hopefully this fiber kicks off.

You shouldn't be forced to upgrade to a more expensive rate or fake being commercial to get rid of these overages. It's a services pyramid scheme of sorts.
