Especially since Martha's was stupid enough to blame the "new server" and lie about a misunderstanding. "Oh we thought she meant GUARD dog". It's like something straight out of a comedy movie.

In reading the KBTX article, what strikes me as insincere on the MB apology is that they state that "30-60 seconds of terrible miscommunication" were responsible for this issue.

It seems unlikely to me that this supposed brand-new hostess misheard "guard dog" not "guide dog" and didn't bother for clarification and that this person didn't even attempt to correct it in the time it took for the Navasota PD to arrive. Not to mention, I highly doubt that even this brand-new hostess couldn't tell the difference between a person who's *****ing about their Fluffy not being let in versus arguing with a person who's blind enough to have a legal guide dog.

And the apology doesn't even hold it's own water. Supposedly two waitresses, this new hostess and a manager all talked with her, and even viewed the ADA card, and still rejected it. But the corporate person out of Dallas said this all resulted from "30-60 seconds of terrible miscommunication". Which is it? Did four employees take part in this, and had the guide dog law explained and viewed an ADA identification/law card or was it solely the fault of a "brand new hostess" and the result of "30-60 seconds of terrible miscommunication"

Nothing serves to better enlighten and win over the hearts and minds of those who have wronged you than to place a criminal blot on their permanent records. Sure, it's a misdemeanor, but still. And don't accuse me of taking MB's side, as they did wrong, but as others have said, the whole thing has gotten out of hand. Civil court is where this belongs.

Of course, then again maybe it's just me and my fatigued reaction to a world in which Our Lady of Perpetual Outrage seems to have become everyone's favorite patron saint.

So true. This has gone from wanting an apology to wanting to collect as many scalps as possible.

Only a petty individual would want to brand people with a criminal record over something like this.

If it were taken to civil court, you'd have people on here (as they already have been and on the comments articles) saying she was only doing it for the money or was looking for a lawyer-induced payday.

What happened, while very minimal, was a criminal act. According to our legal system, this is the legal and proper venue. Don't like it, petition the government to change it to a civil action rather than a criminal one.

I'm sure if MB had apologized to her directly, rather than issuing a disjointed story, semi-apology to the press, then it might appear to her as if they took it seriously, and truly intended to correct the problem.

In a time of faux outrage, it's easy to knock everyone out (until some incident gets you) and assume they're just outraged idiots looking for fame-*****dom and money. But what you lose when you do that are the people, few as they may be, that have actual incidents.

This is an actual incident. Not to mention, it's an actual incident where the response from MB's corporate offices doesn't match with what's reported in having gone on, which blows out their credibility in my mind.

I'm all about giving a business a fair shot to respond to a person's concerns or qualms. However, if that business lies or gets their story wrong, then I have little to no trust in their explanation. Same with the person making the claims.

Good summation, however Texas law at this time allows for an option of civil proceedings. However if you read the statute damages are not to exceed $300.00 in civil matter. MB has been most disingenuous with their dealing with the issue. But still don't like it, take it up with Abbot's office or your local representative for 2017.

This attitude strikes me as similar to those who run red lights in town. Run a red light because you're in a hurry to get where you're going? Fine, but if you get caught, it's a misdemeanor.

She did not receive much of an apology. Read the story.

It's not her being petty, it's the law. Fortunately, the misdemeanor may serve another purpose in educating some locals about the ADA laws.

Once the law was called it was out of her hands for charges. MB let it get that far. Also this is not just a Texas law but a federal law also applies that would involve the DOJ

Anyone who wants to see people with both a state and federal criminal record for the rest of their lives over this are very small, petty people.

Everyone has had sh*t happen to them in life and didn't have people arrested, booked, mug shots, and then tried, and convicted over it. This woman is wanting nothing more than to harm as many people as possible out of pure payback and spite.

Try getting any good job with a federal criminal record. No one should have their life ruined over this but that is what she and her supporters want.

Calm down. It's a misdemeanor, just like running a red light. The good thing about it is maybe others here locally with similar misguided attitudes will learn something. And, maybe gain some sorely needed compassion for the disabled.

Wow. All you folks that are blaming her for this need to spend a week or so walking in her shoes. I had retina surgery twice this year. I lost total sight in one eye for several weeks while things were healing up, and it still won't ever be 100% in that eye. Never. I have no clue what going totally blind is like, but I sure as hell have a damn healthy FEAR of it.

If you all think this is about flowerpots and a sandwich you are WAY wrong. This is about how a bunch of idiots in Navasota treated a blind lady badly. Embarrassed the hell out of her, and then when she called the law, they didn't even help her (more good ole Navasota boys). I hope that place shuts down. I hope she sues the crap out of them.

I had cataract surgery in middle school, and can only read a book out of one eye, and think this all ridiculous.

This is the kind of nonsense that incites the kind of responses you are seeing from this thread.

Businesses make mistakes ALL THE TIME. Literally every single day. Businesses are not perfect. Humans are not perfect. Blue Bell screwed up and people DIED, yet here you are wishing for the demise of this business and insulting an entire town for a relatively minor, yet obvious mistake. Seems to me you must have some kind of axe to grind. Maybe you need to spend a week or two walking in a business owner's shoes. Or a week or two walking in a front line police officer's shoes.

This isn't a simple little mistake. There was obviously an extended amount of time to have a discussion about this issue with a customer, including glancing at a labeled service dog, reading a card, and conversing with an obviously blind woman. I mean, how many clues do you need?

I guess we need to feel bad for Martha's employees since they're also apparently blind, deaf, and totally lacking interpersonal skills that would have laid this matter to rest quickly and nicely.

Whats not simple about the mistake? An employee and manager were confused about whether one set of government imposed regulations (health code) trumped another set of government imposed regulations (accommodating disabled persons), and it resulted in a customer being embarrassed and denied the opportunity to spend some money at the business. If that is the worst mistake a business ever makes, and the worst consequences such a mistake causes, that business is doing pretty good.

I am not saying you need to feel bad for Martha's Bloomers or for the employees. They screwed up. There are consequences for screwing up which the business has to deal with. However wishing the business be entirely shutdown over it or calling a whole town a bunch of idiots and good ole boys over the mistake is just ridiculous. Having never been there myself, I feel certain that Marthas Bloomers isn't full of disabled hating employees looking for reasons to keep the business clear of them.

I've owned and run my own business before. I never acted like a complete idiot to a blind lady. I have plenty of police friends. I could tell you that their opinions of NPD are only a little higher than Hearne PD which is a joke. But that won't matter. Minds are made up. This is a topic that some folks just won't get the point. Thank God for ADA laws to protect the blind and the infirm.
your "police friends" sound like some real fine folks if they are publicly denigrating the service of fellow officers from other jurisdictions.

I'm not going to see the "jerk blind lady trying to ruin the business of some proud business owner" angle. Y'all aren't going to see the whole "compassion for the handicapped" angle I have.

I see the "compassion for the handicapped" angle you have. I have that angle too. No need to go into personal stories, but handicapped people absolutely deserve to be treated with dignity, and the ADA and other laws that offer them protection are extremely good and just laws. I'm glad they are being enforced in this instance, and also glad that the it appears others are being educated on them.

The "angle" of yours that I can't see is the "This business deserves to be shutdown entirely" and the "this shows that Navasota is full of a bunch of backwards imbeciles" angle that you have going on.

Nothing shy of dog pack mentality.

Look for the impaired and kick 'em down.

I've witnessed people in groups of three verbally attacking a handicapped person. Basically, these are sick people.

I think the hecklers should hang out at the handicapped car spaces and judge every person that gets out of the car. Based on your expertise, you can let the person know what you think. Please bring first aid items with you. If you insult someone, they might come after you.

For those thinking she wants money, I say she is an Advocate. Advocates work hard when there plight continues to suffer. If you know American history, or if you follow the news, this occurs every single day in the USA.

This was a mistake on behalf of MB, not a purposeful act of discrimination. Their mentality was not "get her out of here because she's blind" it was "we don't allow pets in here." This was ignorance that caused the situation not discrimination.

This should not have gotten past the file a complaint with the manager, a social media posting, and choosing to take her money elsewhere. It should have never been escalated to the point it did.

There was no criminal intent involved in this and the fact that a business is being sued over this tells me all I need to know about the woman.
