Please forgive me if my private school defense gave the impression that I am anti- public school. I am extremely pro public school and do what I can to further its importance. I guess I became part of the problem and opted for private school.

I agree that BISD gets an undeserved bad rap. The teachers are exceptional, they offer the same programs and facilities but because most of the schools are in diverse economic deficient areas the schools are perceived as "lacking". I wish more happy BISD parents would speak up to dispel the myth that the world ends and begins with South CS schools.

Stupe- If I remember correctly from another thread, mwesson literally did draw the map and posted impassioned arguments defending it.

You don't remember correctly. I didn't draw the map.

I did sit on the rezoning committee that was made up many different community members a while back and I currently sit on the CSISD School Board now.

I don't know what thread you are referring to, but I don't appreciate it when people come onto a forum and make statements like "they were done by a first grader". The notion that the maps are done by incompetent people because of the weird shapes of the zones is ludicrous. This is an incredibly difficult process with lots of factors going into making the decisions.

If Stupe's argument is that the zones should be more clear in their presentation - that's one thing. However, that is not what was insinuated.

I think I just need to stay off these boards. This is now my New Year's Resolution. Goodbye Aggieland Boards. No more posting from me.

I didn't "insinuate" anything. I very clearly posted "attendance zone map" and didn't say a thing about the attendance zones themselves.

Stupe, there is an address lookup feature under the bus route information. I'll grant you, that might not be the first place I would think of looking for attendance zones. But if you go the the "Parent Info" section on the CSISD website, then choose "Transportation", and then "Bus Stop Information", you can type in an address, and it will show you the school that that address is zoned to for the current year.
I've told people about that function and that's not the first place that anyone would look. That map should be on the Attendance Zones page.

Both of my children are in the CSISD dual language program (currently offered at South Knoll, Southwood Valley, and College Hills). Applications will be coming out soon, and parent info meetings are in March. Here is the website.

I have appreciated that my kids are in very diverse classrooms. I often say that their class looks like Texas. They have friends from all around the world, and are deeply immersed in the Spanish language. The kids spend half the day in Spanish--my 5th grader is pretty fluent; my 3rd grader has some work to do.

I've been happy with this decision for my kids. At times, the homework load has been pretty heavy because it takes us time to translate so we can help him. We have learned so much in the process, though.

Do not worry, I enjoy a good conversation and like to bring up examples. I do not feel like you are anti-public schools. But to continue what you are saying, concerning the parents, they do need to speak up, and there are parents that do speak up. Unfortunately, many of them speak by moving away from schools with bad raps, choosing to not fight it. I'm not saying that is the best thing, but facts are facts.

I know the OP was asking about elementary schools, but the thread has also included discussions on CSISD and BISD in general, so I thought I'd throw in my 2 cents worth. We lived in Bryan the past 6 years in a community we really enjoyed (Austin's Colony) and my older daughter graduated from Rudder last year. My younger daughter was in a small private school but we chose not to continue sending her there for HS.

My older daughter did not have a great HS experience at Rudder. She was in the health sciences program at Hammond-Oliver and liked those classes, but did not enjoy the classes or atmosphere at Rudder at all. I know every family has different experiences, but ours was of teachers that had almost non-existent communications with parents and classes where my daughter felt like she was the only student who cared at all about what was being taught.

Based on the unpleasant experience my older daughter had at Rudder, we decided to sell our home in Bryan and move to CS, so our younger daughter could attend CSHS. She is a freshman this year and the difference has been dramatic. We receive regular communications from all her teachers. She enjoys her classes and we feel much better about the education she is receiving.

And we found a community we really like in CS (Creek Meadows) that feeds into the Greens Prairie elementary school zone and have also heard really great things about that school. We don't regret our move at all.
