I'm fairly certain I saw a bobcat cross the road this morning in the Lick Creek area. I've heard plenty of coyotes and even a roadrunner recently near the Peach Creek winery, but the bobcat was a first in all my years here.

I've seen the following in town (in areas not as secluded and wooded as Lick Creek).

Bobcat
Fox
Skunk
Coyote
Wild Pig
Deer
Beaver (it was dead in the road, but definitely a beaver)

^^ I've seen a lynx, wild turkey, and nutria, too.

I've seen all those too. The bobcat was a first. A lynx would have been cool to see too.

Actually, I didn't believe my wife when she said she saw a roadrunner. I've ridden thousands of miles on these country roads and have never seen one until this weekend.

We see roadrunners everyday around Great Oaks and Quail Run

I think a real find would be a horny toad. Haven't seen those since I was a kid.

I saw the roadrunner only once many years ago outside town. Haven't seen one since. The lynx was more recent, near the Navasota River off 21. Never seen a bobcat around here, though.

Yes, there are bobcats in that area.

Please don't harm them.

I see no reason to harm them. They'll help keep the feral cat population down.

I was at First baptist is CS one night about a year ago and a huge cat - bobcat or lynx - was walking on the grounds. One night a skunk wouldnt let us get into the building until i honked my car at him and he ran off

My Grandparents lived in Roans Prairie when I was a kid. There used to be roadrunners, wolves, and a lot of jack rabbits on their land. I have only been through there once in many years. I am in College Station a lot but haven't seen any jack rabbits in the rural areas around CS. Are they still many around the area? I used to love to watch them run through the hay fields.

Plenty of rabbits, but I don't recall any jackrabbits.

The last 3 years rabbits have made a huge comeback.

Saw a bobcat run across the street on Arrington (ran from the protected wildlife area) and ran into open field across street between Arrington and HEB.

We are creeping up and taking more and more land around these areas. They have to go some where, and sometimes it is in the populated areas we live.

Suspect as we expand outward more ,these sightings will become more common.

It's very unlikely that anyone saw a lynx around College Station. The lynx's range is the far northern parts of the US and throughout Canada.

But, to get real technical, a bobcat is part of the lynx "family" so if you saw a bobcat, you really did see a lynx.

Normally though, when someone refers to a lynx, they are referring to the Canada lynx with the tufts of black hair that crown their ears. That cat does not range in Texas.

Lynx in Central Texas is extremely unlikely.

I was thinking that too...

They have very similar traits. You very likely saw a bobcat. I think lynx are the only cat species in North America that doesn't reside in Texas, not 100% on that.

Could well have been a bobcat. I got a good long look at it was stationary near the river. It's ears definitely looked very lynx like.

Nobody's mentioning armadillos, like the ones that come dig up my yard this time of year?

In Wheeler Ridge and along highway 60 I've seen them, herds of deer, rabbits, roadrunners, coyotes (suspiciously soon after seeing the roadrunners), racoons, owls, crows, Chuck the vulture, skunks, a mole, crawdads (I was raised on The Beverly Hillbillies), various snakes and frogs and toads, and many other varmints.

I almost always see an armadillo while going for a quick walk or run in the evening.

You can thank the fire ants for that. We used to see and catch them all the time out in West Texas.

According to Wiki, bobcats are a species of lynx. The one most people think of is the Canada lynx which is unlikely to be here...I assume they would asphyxiate in the summer heat.

marracco, I actually did see a coyote in pursuit of a roadrunner across Hwy 21 once. The actual ones, not the cartoon versions.

Horny toads were every where in west Texas when I was growing up. I hear they are making somewhat of a comeback in west Texas. I haven't seen one in years though.

Lick Creek is a protected area with abundant rodent and rabbits. I am sure 1-2 bobcats roam the area.

You can find more wildlife as you get to large rivers, creeks or lakes that are in a protected wild area. In the west end of the county we have seen:
All kinds of snakes- rattlesnake, copperhead, king and rat snakes.
Elk (escaped and now running free) running as a group
Deer
Scores of rabbits
Roadrunners
Eagles
Hawks
OWLS
A kite (living not plastic)
several medium gators
Gar
A possible Oarfish (Brazos River)
bobcats
Coyotes
coyote/dog mix
grey fox
armadillo's
otters
nutria
beavers
some kind of weasel
skunks
porcupine
Millions of squirrels
Funnel web spider, yes a funnel web
small tarantulas
turtles of many varieties
feral hogs
escaped antelopes
several wild goats
weird looking ring tailed cat
black tailed jackrabbits
Raccoons - Cute but a pain in the ass
possums
Vultures - all over the place
A dead badger at 47 and Silver Hill rd.
And about 3 different bats

Paddlefish? Occasionally one turns up in Texas rivers, though they are probably on the fast track to extinction in the state.

My father has just recently sent me a couple of photos of horned toads he's seen on his property in Amarillo.

On the Pebble Creek golf course I've seen some kind of wild cat and a coral snake.

This is on the fairway on hole 8 on a hot summer day:

Horned toads will be found where the harvester ants are. Fireants displaced the harvesters in the early seventies around here. Miss the horned toads..

Been seeing an increasing number of Cara-Caras too. Saw a bobcat the other day run across greens prarie from Wellborn Oaks to Sweetwater. Many Kestrels as well. Heard many say they've seen Bald Eagles during certain times of year, but I have to think they are seeing the Cara-Caras.

Game wardens CONFIRM bald eagles in our area. There is a pair that hunt and live at gibbons creek reservoir.

HUGE difference between an oarfish and a paddlefish.

I have photos of a bald eagle I saw last spring or two while on my way to Lick Creek...went all paparazzi on the darned thing. Most definitely not a crested caracara. I've worked with both, and am familiar with the differences. I have seen caracara over Lick Creek Park too.
...but then I get excited when I see a kingfisher....so...yeah.
