My recently engaged friend/colleague left her ring in her bag while she worked out at the Rec on Tuesday around 5:00 pm. The ring was stolen from her bag while she worked out. I thought there might be an outside chance that someone on this board will come across the ring at a pawn shop or something. The sapphire is a family stone.

It's probably a lost cause, but if you have any info about the ring, I'd really appreciate your help. My email is cuppycup at gmail.com. I've never dealt with anything like this, so if you have any advice beyond "don't leave your ring in your gym bag", I'll pass that along as well. Thanks!

Here are some images of the ring.

That ring is incredible.

How did they get the locker open where the bag was located?

Does the rec have cameras? If the locker was one of the ones not in the locker room they might check video footage if there is any.

OP - I will keep my eyes open, as well. And I agree with WO, that is a very nice ring.

Dubi, it isn't helpful to troll and it doesn't matter where the ring was taken. She is asking for some assistance and advice on how it might be recovered.

Never ever take anything valuable with you to a gym. I had a couple of things stolen at the College Station Gold's. I now always change at home, then go to the gym. I keep valuables at home and keep everything else in my pockets at the gym. My brother-in-law had his wallet stolen at the gym in Plano and it was locked up in the locker room.

I got some clarification on the locker situation:

quote:
I took the ring and necklace off and put it in the front pocket of my backpack in women's locker room. Then I took the bag with me and put it beside me while I was on the elliptical in the half floor. The only time I left the bag unattended was when I went to have some water ( 1-2 minutes)

Then I took the bag to go to weight lifting area. I put it in locker in front of the temporary weight lifting area (locker 230) and locked it. When I left the gym the ring and necklace were gone.

I was in half floor between 5:20 and 6:20 and I was in the weight lifting area until 7:10.

You never said it was left unattended, you said it was left up against the wall.

And it appears that Harabec was the one that called you a troll.

At least it's a unique enough ring to be noticed once or if it pops up on the internet or a pawn shop.
advice for jewelry owners- buy insurance on everything of value/ importance. It's not too much and i think my policy is still a cut me a check if it's ever stolen, lost, or destroyed type policy or full replacement. Well worth it if your wife has $20,000 in rings on her fingers.

If it was in the main gym, there should be cameras. She should call the rec and check the footage. Also, those lockers by the weight room aren't safe for valuables. They don't lock reliably. A friend of mine had their bag moved from one.

On a related note, never use this type of lock for anything. I can open one in seconds.

Sometimes, it's not real easy to get places to release the camera tapes. I knew a guy that had to hire a lawyer and get a court order to get a bank to release the tapes at a ATM machine that was used to withdraw all his money out of his bank account. The bank bitterly fought it for a long time. Sounds good, but not easy to always do.

True /\

places are very hard to get to release their security footage. If you decided to go all vigilante on someone the rec could/ probably would get sued.

File open records to get the video surveillance.

However, if you filed a police report with UPD they should have contact Rec Sports for the footage.

What? WHY? Isn't that the whole point in having them????

Definitely check craigslist. Friend of mine had their golf clubs stolen and that's the first thing the police told them to do.

This.

Did they call UPD?

It does not matter whether you are correct or not. It does not matter if the person left the ring on the floor, in plain sight. The OP was asking for help and possibly some advice on how to find the ring not your opinion on what you think happened or should have happened. Your condescending response was not helpful, nor was it necessary. Offer some help or move on.

Furthermore, my intention is not to harass you. I am simply tired of the snarky comments that are so prevalent around here.

If dubi's first post the snarkiest post in this thread then the thread is doing pretty good for this forum. If anything when I read his/her/its post I felt that a simulation suggestion was being given to us so that we might use that in our deduction process of what actions and movement patterns may have been used to perform the theft.

Speaking on that subject, after reviewing the update from OP it seems that this would have had to be some Oceans 11, 12 or possibly 13 type of planning and coordination and must have almost certainly happened when the owner went to get water. I do hope that the water is in a camera viewed area and that the bag was within that shot and that someone didn't loop the feed. Best of luck and I do whole hardheartedly suggest to contact UPD. I am going to watch the movies this weekend to try to get a grasp on any suggestions I can provide as to what the thieves may have done and what their next move may be. Although let us not get sidetracked on a troll hunt but come together to focus on the purpose of the thread topic at hand.

Easier to blame the snarky trolling person.

Especially if UPD wasn't called they are relying on Texags to solve the crime!

I agree. Lets not. There is no need to as I am fairly certain she probably already feels pretty badly about losing her engagement ring.

Cuppycup - if she hasn't already, your friend should contact UPD and file a report. If another student took the ring, then there is the possibility that UPD can have access to any recordings.

Was the necklace stolen also? I'm just wondering if it was possible that the ring might have fallen out of the pocket while the bag was in transit. I would think that the thief would have taken both the necklace and the ring. If only one is gone, then it's possible the was lost, rather than stolen.

Take that picture to the pawn shops. No way someone would willingly walk around with a ring like that....being incredibly unique. That would stick out like a sore thumb on the jackass that stole it.

Video on campus kept for a limited period (if at all). Contacting UPD is important in getting the video feed (If it exists). Good luck in your search.

She contacted UPD after the incident and they are supposed to review tapes, but unfortunately the half-floor where it was presumably stolen does not have full surveillance.

The ring theft made the UPD "significant activity summary".

Maybe the thief will show up to claim their award for most significant activity and they can nab them then.

My engagement ring was stolen from me at UTSA several years ago. I was in a bathroom, washing my hands, and a group of girls approached me and began to talk to me. One of them swiped the ring above the sink while I was washing; right from under my nose.

I felt horrible. I tried everything to find it, but was never successful.

Best of luck to you!
