I think this will be a good change for the Chicken. I did not see another thread on this, but I apologize if this is a Germans bombing the moon post.

I thought the Dixie Chicken had always had a whiskey bar in the front, closest to University?

Nope.

The bird has always been a "beer (wine)" bar.

I'm surprised they're goin to start selling hard stuff

Nope. It was restaurant that only sold beer. In fact it didn't even have 51% signs up a few weeks ago.

I don't know if this is a good change or bad. However, it very well may have been necessary.

I, for one, will never drink liquor bought at the Chicken. That was one of the big reasons I lived there in college. It was nice to sit and play 42, and drink all night and still be sober enough to function/remember.

If they become 51% again, I think they will have to start checking IDs at the door. This means children will not be allowed in. So your children's first beer at the chicken might get pushed back a few years.

Probably going to start play that hippity hop music and replace the trough with urinals too.

Sounds like the girls are hurting for money, not making it with the coyote lot price hick to $20, and hoping to support their lifestyles by hanging the bird.

What effect will this have on dry bean?

Techno, change was tough when Rudder was bringing it to TAMU. The Chicken will survive.

Liquor up front, poker in the rear

Hurting for money? Probably not.

Based on nothing more than the number of people I've seen ask for liquor at the bar, then be shocked that they don't sell it... It's just good business.

What is really funny is when people get mad and say, "I bought a shot here a few weeks ago!"

Will have zero effect on The Bean.

Good. Something else to drink besides the ****ty beer they have on tap.

Their beer selection has expanded to include Texas craft beers.

Yep, that was cut out around '04 or so. Sure was nice to go in and order a Freddy Special burger basket with fries and limitless fountain drink for $5.75 and split a bottle o whiskey amongst friends.

I think this will be a good change for the Chicken. Some women prefer liquor over beer and that can't be bad for business.

It's a smart move for customer retention in regards to women/couples/groups with women, as their cider selection is small and horribly overpriced/underpoured (they put ice in it to save money and claim its a TABC regulation).

That having been noted, some of the Bean staff is a little nervous. While it likely won't affect their busy nights, I expect the sunday-wednesday nights will be hurt. Some of the bean staff is being used to help set up and manage the new bar, as would make sense.

TABC does not require the place to be 18 or 21 and up when serving liquor (think about all the restaurants that serve booze), but many insurance companies do.

restaurants and bars are treated differently though. There is the whole 51% classification. The Chicken used to be rare in that it was 51%, but did not sell liquor.

I guess there are still a few 51% establishments that are 18+ which sell liquor, but they are definitely dwindling. Most are 21+.

TexasRebel, you're waaay off base - there are plenty of locations in Texas that are all ages, are 51%, and serve liquor. There is no legal causation between 51% and patron age limit - it's at the discretion of the company and their insurance company.

Anyways, today is the first day.

EDIT:

May a minor enter the premises where a license or permit is issued?

Generally yes, if he does not possess or consume an alcoholic beverage. A minor may not enter the premises of a package store unless accompanied by an adult parent, spouse or guardian. A licensee or permittee may have a “house rule” that minors may not enter their licensed premises.

It took exactly 40 years, but as of today you can buy liquor in The Chicken.

The girls have been hurting for money for years, they were when I worked there about 6 years ago. Bars just don't support their millionaire lifestyles.

Torn on this.

Being able to bring a bottle in was nice. And it was the summer of 2004 that it ended.

I highly doubt the girls are hurting. Unless their step mom took a goos size chunk of their inheritence. People underestimate how cheap it is to run a place you have had for that long. People also underestimate how much money is made on game days alone in both food and beer.

I have no idea how much money they do/don't make, but I know they are incredibly generous to local non-profits like ours. They've gone out of their way to help Mercy Project and the BCS Marathon anytime we've asked, and I think that says a lot about their character and hearts.

Chris,

You are right. We didnt see eye to eye but i love them both. Their dad was a hard man to work for, which ment earning any praise was worth the payout and taught me a lot about being flexible to management.

I wish them the best.
