I haven't seen anything on here about this yet. It is mentioned on both KBTX and the Eagle's websites.

Atmos sent out an email to customers warning people that there is a phishing scam going around where a fake bill supposedly from Atmos will link you to some malware so don't click it.

A while back, Atmos used to send both paper bills and electronic bills, and at some point they sent out a message saying that they were no longer going to send the bill two ways so now it's just electronic. They didn't ask us to pick a bill format. They decided on their own to switch ours to electronic and they send the bills in an unsafe way ( as obvious by the scam currently circulating ). You have to click on something in their emails to see your bill. Apparently how you know if you are seeing a real bill or the phishing scam is by the account number. Do many people actually have their utility account numbers memorized?

Is there any way to switch to getting an actual paper bill or go to a local office and have your account looked up by name or address? As far as I can tell, Atmos doesn't accept payments at their local office (just at bill pay places in grocery stores).

I got an email from Atmos about that. I am always getting emails that look like they are from Chase, Bank of America, and others telling me to go to a website to verify my identity. They always want my SSN number. They say if I don't give the info, I will lose my account. I just ignore them. I also get tons of calls from Capital One wanting my SSN number to give me a credit card. I always tell them that I will give them my number if they give me their number. They always hang up.

Got the Atmos one as well. If you look at the sender's email address, it should be obvious that it's not from Atmos (can't remember what it said now that I've deleted it). Definitely avoid opening!

I got this email - two, actually. They both went to my spam folder but at first glance I assumed it was legitimate.

Always be sure to check the email address of the sender! In these emails, the sender's name was something like "donotreply@atmosenergy.com," which sounds legitimate enough, but then the sender's email address was "dave03@rainbowofficesupplies" or something similarly unusual. The fact that I had two emails within a few days time was a tipoff too; each email had a different account number.

We pay by automatic draft and get a paper statement after it is drafted, so I didn't have any need to click the email. But if someone wasn't paying attention or didn't know what to look for, they could definitely fall victim to this one.

Good morning, folks. It is true that an email purporting to be from Atmos Energy is circulating. Interestingly, I got one sent to my Atmos Energy account. The return address was an AOL account but informed me my bill was ready to view.

To clarify something said in the OP, this is not a phishing scam. Instead, clicking the link in the offending email will take you to a website infected with malware. Granted, that could put some of your personal information at risk, but is not what would be considered a traditional phishing scam.

If you are unsure if the email is truly from Atmos Energy, the best thing to do is log in on our website, www.atmosenergy.com to make sure the numbers match up. In the meantime, we are working with ISPs to determine the source of the email, though that is like looking for the proverbial needle in a haystack. In the meantime, if it looks suspicious, don't click it, delete it.

To address the billing questions, you should be able to change your billing methods on our website, www.atmosenergy.com. We cannot accept payments at our local office but you can make in person payments at a number of local grocery and convenience stores.

As always, you can email me personally and I will be happy to answer any questions you have and/or privately address concerns: chace.murphy@atmosenergy.com.

All the best and I hope you have a great 2014!

Sender's email addresses are very very easy to fake. You need to mouseover the link and look at the server url, before clicking on it, or at least look in the url bar before putting in any login information.

* Even better, bookmark the https link to login, and use that bookmark instead of any link provided in email.

As opposed to the super top secret safe way of dropping a paper letter off in a mailbox that is readily available to anyone in the world to get into? Also, did you consider that most companies do this as a means to save money, which in turn saves you money?

Find the option to view "Full Headers" and verify the return path is Atmos.

As a general rule I don't click on those links in emails but type in the address myself.
