"Organizers of the Texas Reds Steak and Grape Festival in Downtown Bryan have said the 2013 edition will be dedicated to the city's firefighters, and a charitable donation will be made in honor of injured Firefighters Ricky Mantey and Mitch Moran, along with the late Lieutenants Eric Wallace and Greg Pickard.
The festival this year is set for September 27 and 28.
A portion of the proceeds will go towards the Firefighters Association to directly benefit those families."

Charitable donation (from the city? motel tax?) maybe so, but a portion of the proceeds will be a negative amount, based on the history of the event.
Maybe just donate the cost of the festival, and cancel the event?

We have always enjoyed our visits to the Tx Reds, but the math says it's hard to donate from a money-losing operation...unless of course tax $$ are involved. KBTX at 6pm said the CoB was going to divulge just how it will all be possible (w/o using Enron accounting...or maybe not).

They've been making more money every year at TR. I'm sure they'll have a place to donate to the firefighters this year.

Kudos to City of Bryan.

A "place to donate specifically to Firefighters" is different than "a portion of the proceeds will go to the firefighters"

Super premium high end blue star for techno's advocacy of government spending for entertainment purposes.

So if they lose money again this year, they'll donate proceeds from a loss causing them to lose even more money?
Scruffy

Hold.....

So techno is for the spending of public (tax payer's money) for entertainment, but is all for uneducated and researched cutting of "state employees" because they suck on the government teet?

Interesting.

I think so too, Scruffy.

c'mon, fellas...doncha know that ANY funds coming in are proceeds, so it's not tax money that is being donated.

Tsk. "I'm sure they'll have a place to donate" =/= taxpayer money.

"In order to help them, the city is giving a charitable donation from the festival to the Bryan Firefighters Association. But in the past 6 years of the event, the festival hasn't made any money. So how will the association get proceeds from the event? Bienski says a donation will be made.

"Whether it is $5,000 or $10,000 on up depending on what kind of money we can bring in with sponsorships but we definitely want to set aside some of the proceeds,” said Bienski."

Or maybe they will have a place to donate, with a "portion" of the proceeds used towards the actual donation.
Or it could be a huge success, with excess funds to.......never mind.

Sounds like we will have to TRUST the organizers of Texas Reds.

I'm thinking after the official investigation is completed, the City of Bryan will be donating alot more than proceeds from a festival.

I continue to be amazed at people so angry at Bryan for trying to stimulate the economy of Bryan with an event such as Texas Reds.

At least they are trying.

If you don't like the method, then run for office and come up with your own ideas to draw people to spend money in Bryan.

But internet tough guy criticism of something that is by in large supported by the community, and this year giving to a charity to help local public servants who were injured in the line of duty is pretty weak.

Yes, TR might lose money. But like I said, at least they are trying !

Yea, they have one and have yet to generate the other. I just can't figure out how an event can lose money, yet still give money away.

I'd never be able to run a business at a loss every year, go bankrupt, and pat myself on the back saying "Hey, at least I tried"

Good intentions don't pay the bills.
SARATOGA

They operate at a loss, the proceeds don't cover the costs alone. So yes, they take money from the general fund (your tax dollars) to pay for the costs that are not covered with the proceeds.

If you don't like it. Then run for office and mandate that all attempt to drive business to Bryan must be wholly self sufficient with proceeds covering costs 100 percent of the time.

Good luck with that.

We don't have to run for office to tell the people who ARE in office that we think it's a waste of money and to pull the plug.

That is true.

But you're probably in the minority.

It seems to be pretty well supported by the community (though at a loss).

If the plug is pulled, and a mandate given to only have events the generate a positive ROI, you might not like the dwindling numbers of events attempted; or the lack of business investment in Bryan if small business owners don't perceive the city to be behind them.

Because the majority of people are not smart enough or don't care enough to see that the event is costing them money, more than what they are paying at the door.

BTW - IIRC the monies for TxReds comes from the HOT not the general fund.

SARATOGA
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Since we're adding accuracy...

Just the BRYAN HOT funds ? Bryan alone ?

In that case, it is only costing the residents of Bryan money, and it isn't really COSTING them money, unless you take the assumption that money would be spent on something else that directly benefits them...

Its an event, its supposed to cost money. The city charges admission and vendor fees to keep the event costs down. It would be nice if it broke even, even better if made some money back. But it is a public event paid for with HOT taxes not General funds.

Enjoy it. Its fun.

From today's Eagle:
"This year, however, admission will be free, but festival attendees will need to purchase a $5 wristband to drink beer and wine, and an additional $5 wristband to attend the main stage event on Saturday night."

The advocates here and elsewhere were just certain the admission take was going to ensure a closer balance set of books.
Tax money to the rescue!
"But the festival historically has not made any money. Thousands attended last year's festival, and it generated an economic impact of $1.7 million, but Walker said it left the city approximately $145,000 in the red. He said the city used public funds from hotel and motel taxes to bring the total closer to breaking even."

Still a little fuzzy math at work here...
"Walker said the cost savings will allow the city to make a donation of between $4,000 and $5,000."
http://www.theeagle.com/news/local/article_d42436ba-c5e0-544e-98a9-2067b38eb667.html

I hope it's a fun event (again), just be realistic and truthful when it comes to "proceeds, profits, and donations".
