Wondering what our city will decide.
I could see CHL being an available course for a phys ed credit.

Probably nothing yet. Seeing as how the Legislature has to pass it.

If they pass it there will probably be blood flowing out of the O&M building as there is now at the restaurants, retail shops, and all up and down Texas Avenue.

CHL is already allowed on campus. It's just the premises that you cannot carry into. Texas law defines premise as a building or part of a building.

I have no doubt the Brazos will run red with blood should this ever become law.

Who wouldn't risk a misdemeanor for the ability to protect themselves? It means the faculty and staff, or institutions, can't override your right to self-protection. Like it or not many CHL's will carry on campus when this is passed.

I'm all for it...

I hope it passes.

FIFY.

I have known several people in offices I've worked in who would rather risk the law vs. risking their loss of life.

Where's the laughing/crying icon when you need it? I love it when misinformed people react to this with "Gunfight at the O.K. Corral" in mind.

@ Robert: Oh, you were being sarcastic? You should've used a "winky face" smiley or something like that.

(Glad to know you weren't serious: that would be unfortunate)

That's what leftists do. They must make sure everyone else lives how they want. Texas is in for a rude awakening as leftists from failing Democrat states start pouring in here with their politics.

The passage in the house looks good but the Senate is a huge hurdle. Sen Whitmire is against it and is killing any hope. Possible long shot if Sen Patrick can work some magic with Whitmire. Everyone needs to contact their State Senator and turn up the heat.

Reminds me of the following controversy that occurred in Wyoming. The reaction by the young senator is a classic breath of fresh air that we need in today's politics.

I can also vouch for this indirect, non-incriminating statement. (I think) I may know of people who have been carrying on campus (in their offices, classrooms, etc). I think they may feel "screw it!". If a Luby's or Virginia Tech situation happens here, at least I MIGHT have a chance to save lives & survive. So screw the law (that they didn't vote for).

I do, by the way, feel safer on campuses without concealed carry than I would on a campus with concealed carry. Most of you disagree with me about that, but that doesn't necessarily mean that any of us are naive, stupid, etc. We just disagree about that empirical issue. (There's not enough evidence to perfectly answer that question one way or another.)

There's a very good empirical prof at A&M that looked into a related question about expansion of the Castle Doctrine and it's effect on violence. Guess what he found?
robertcope
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I don't think anyone of us would argue the Castle Doctrine would reduce crime, if that's what the professor was trying to determine. It's about being able to protect yourself when crime takes place. See the difference?

I've used a shotgun to get an intruder out of my house. It worked really well. I was young at the time, 12 or 13; there was no way I would have physically been able to do much about it. I doubt that incident, and incidents like it, are ever factored into the statistics that are used by anyone. But I bet they happen more often than we think.

I believe that in principle I have a right to defend myself and my family. No amount of discussion, statistics, etc will sway me from that.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
Robert - You are absolutely right that the "right to defend oneself" is a different issue that I brought up with the Castle Doctrine paper. There are, indeed, a lot of dimensions to the gun issue.

I can, of course, differ in my views about where to draw the line on what people are allowed to do without being a pink commie right?

Captain Flagg:

Like you, I care about evidence. Hang in there indeed.

And if people are carrying on campus now, and saying (as someone above said) "screw the law I didn't vote for," then for those people, the oft-spoken "law abiding CHL holder" does not apply, amiright? Obeying only laws you like removes your right to trumpet yourself as a "law abiding" anything. That said, I have no idea if the person who said this above knows the violations to be true.
