my son found a bullet in Brushy creek in round rock that is 7.5 inches long and 1.25 inches in diameter. We are curious as to what shoots something that big!

Look like this?

Just the bullet or a whole cartridge (bullet, case, primer, and powder)? If just a bullet, that is...huge. If a cartridge, that's more reasonable but still very big.

If the actual bullet (projectile and not casing) is 1.25 inches in diameter, then you are possibly looking at a 30 millimeter "tankbuster" round fired by an Airforce A-10 Warthog jet or Army Apache helicopter. The bullet could be depleted uranium (U-238) and slightly radioactive.

1.5 * 25.4 is 39.4, so, it's closer to a 40mm round, 7.5" is around 190mm, which is about right for the Bofors 40 x 310 round.

(Those 30mm DU rounds are about the same level of ionizing as a bunch of bananas or a couple pounds of coal, for a comparison.)

Bullet measurements include the case. And you are correct, it is huge!

It also seems like if it indeed took batteries, it would at least be a D. :-).

I love the pictures posted. But, no, they are not like any of these on this post. It might be older???

My boys and I are excited to find out what type of gun shoots this beast.

so if this thing is radio active, maybe I should get it out of the house?

I'll ask the colonel that lives across the street from me. I'm certain he'll know what facility will take this sucker back! But in the mean time, if any of you have an idea of where I should take this (if it's radio active), please do share.

Not enough bottleneck on the case for 30mm used in the GAU-8.

The blue color on the projectile indicates a training round, which will be entirely inert.

What that might be is a 25mm Bushmaster round, which could have come loose from a number or rotary-wing aircraft in an innocent fashion (fell out of some space where it was loose).

I think she said 1.25 inches, which is 31.75mm.

DU is also a heavy metal which is toxic regardless of radioactivity. If the DoD says it has the ionizing potential of banannas or coal, I definitely would not touch it. I bet DoD said Agent Orange was as safe as milk, too.

I keep a 20mm dummy round on my office desk and it does not have a blue color.

TEEX teaches an Unexploded Ordinance (UXO) class. Ed Fritz is the instructor/coordinator for that program.

As mentioned, it's an M788TP. It is not inert. The primer is still intact.

These rounds do contain a propellant and it could be potentially dangerous.

1. My son found it in a creek!!!
2. I did not give it to him to play with.
3. I live in Small town USA where we teach our kidos how to shoot a gun safely; identify poisonous snakes; poison ivy and oak; and how to cross the street safely; dont talk to strangers; and how to be kind and polite to one another; among other practicalities for this part of the world.
And I thank God for the good fortune of living in such a great country where we thankfully do not have to regularly worry about finding spent or live rounds riddling our countryside. Nor do I have to warn my children of running through fields that might have land mines.

Everyone on here has always been so pleasant, polite and helpful to me. I have never antagonized or even encountered you or anyone on this forum, for that matter.

I am more inclined to warn my children against toxic unspent rounds such as yourself! Do you always wake up this antagonistic and Cantankerous? Sheesh!

That can be one of a couple things.... Practice munition.... Or an HEI high explosive incendiary ..... Or just HE High Explosive.... It looks to be 30mm in dia.... if that's the case it's either the HE or Practice..... I cant tell but .... What color is it? If its blue.... Then it's probably practice.... But sometimes blue will fade or change to green .... If its green it is possibly the HE version ..... I can look at it for you and let you know my number is 979-862-3410. Ed Fritz. I am the program manager for the Unexploded Ordnance Training here at TEEX

I havent seen it posted yet so Im going to.

That's cool as hell that you found something like that. If TEEX will ID it and not confiscate it, Id have that done for my own personal knowledge. Otherwise, id sit it on a shelf and keep my mouth shut.

The color appears to be oxidation of the brass to me.

The A-10's do not train with their DU rounds due to the trace amounts of radiation. Although when they're fired they end up about 19 feet in the ground. According to the pilot I chatted with at the static display after the Florida game, they have not loaded any DU rounds in their planes since the first gulf war.

Also their weapons do not discharge any of the brass. The brass is cycled on it's belt back into the drum magazine. The way the cannon is built into the plane and the airflow around it there is too much risk of the brass (and belt) getting pulled into an engine.
