So now that I understand reasons behind the law for window tint, when I get it redone how do I make sure its legal? Do I trust the tent company or do I go by College Station PD and have then test it?

The pillars on a car.
The first set framing the windshield are the "A" pillars.
The next set back (rear edge of driver door) are "B" pillars.
Set after that is "C" pillars, and so on.
Usually, only stretch/12 passenger vans or limos will have more pillars than "E" or so.

Thank you! Makes sense now!

Remember that most factory windows are also tinted at a small percentage. Many are tinted at 95% where you wouldn't even realize they are tinted.

Add that 5% to the 25% "legal" film you have installed and now light transmission is only 20% and you're breaking the law.

Any good tint shop should take this in to consideration when doing front windows.

Tinting that is legal will have a sticker with a DOT label. Both my front windows have them.

This is from the DPS site:

The language of 547.609 of the Texas Transportation Code was interpreted by the Department as requiring one label for each vehicle regardless of how many windows had sunscreening devices applied to them. As a result, in Chapter 21 of the Texas Administrative Code (TAC), TXDPS requires that only one label be attached to the rearmost, bottom corner of the driver’s side window of the vehicle. The passenger side is optional. The content of the label shall include “Complies with TRC Chapter 547” (or “Complies with TTC 547.613 (b)” which is currently utilized). Any other information on the label, including the installer’s name, is optional.

Post pictures of the truck. It is possible that the truck has other attributes that are causing the po po to take a second look.

It even has a cutesy little tinted window in the license cover
This is against the law as well. Although your LP frame may not cover any printed info on the plate, all covers (clear, tinted, etc.) are also prohibited. I've even seen really cool LP covers that look normal when viewed with the naked eye, but once any lightsource flashes on the plate, the number becomes blurry and basically indistinguishable. That would certainly come in handy if you intended to run a lot of toll booths.

I've even heard of officers pulling people over because they felt their view to the license plate was obscured despite the plate being completely exposed, but I don't think that is a ticketable offense. It's easily defensible in court, so request a jury trial.

It's a "probable cause" issue. ie headlight out, changing lanes without signaling, license plate or tail light not working.

Probable cause allows officer to stop you, run your drivers license (to find warrants) and sniff for alcohol, drugs, burglar tools in back seat etc.

It all adds to your chances of being pulled over, especially at night.

Reasonable suspicion...

Probable cause allows an officer to arrest you or search your vehicle/person. Reasonable suspicion allows you to be stopped.

Reasonable Suspicion v. Probable Cause isn't as cut and dry as you are trying to make it. In the case of window tint violations, reasonable suspicion is used to make the stop. Another example would be inspection stickers (kinda hard to see and be sure 100 percent I imagine). However, once they realize they are wrong, a moral officer will immediately terminate the stop and allow them to leave. 90 percent (guessing obviously) of traffic stops are based on probable cause instead of reasonable suspicion. License plate lights, tail lights, head light out, etc are probable cause stops at night. They alone being out at night are crimes in of themselves that the officer witnesses and is taking action on. Also a traffic stop is pretty much an arrest anyway. You are just allowed to sign a promise to appear in court instead of going before a magistrate immediately (if the officer chooses to cite you).

Probable cause, probable suspension

either way, if you are drinking, have a warrant etc, you are taking a ride to Brazos County Jail.

Moral to this story, don't drink and drive and don't draw attention to yourself, especially at night.

Tail lite tinting is one of the most ignorant things I have ever heard of. He deserves to be rear ended and he should get the ticket if it happens. He is clearly a moron.

Like stated above, it's for show cars. The black ones complete the "black out" effect that matches black rims.

I could see using something like that at a car show, I don't get using them on a car that drives on the street everyday. Just seems like you're begging to be rear-ended.

I saw a brand new, decked-out black Chevy (black wheels, dark tint, black everything else) driving erratically in front of me the other day with these tinted taillights. It was well into the evening and you couldn't see his brake-lights or signals at ALL, and after reading this thread I had to think long and hard about teaching him an expensive lesson. I'd imagine the police in this town would quickly issue him several tickets for defective equipment if he were to be involved in any sort of wreck.
