Howdy, we are looking for preschool suggestions for a smart, but overactive 3 year old. His current curriculum (Montessori) is a bit too structured all morning for his maturity level and the consensus is that he needs to break up his day with more physical activities. The current school tells us he's advanced academically, so we don't want to leave that out, but need to find somewhere with more physical activity throughout the day (which is difficult in the heat of summer!)

Powersports is an obvious answer and we're planning on checking them out ASAP. Any reviews there would be appreciated, as well as any suggestions for other schools that would work.

I was going to suggest powersports. I recently toured there as I will need summer care next year. Since my daughter goes to gymnastics there, I went over and talked to the staff. First impression exceeded my expectations. They have freeplay in the morning in the gym and the kids also get 30 minutes of gymnastics per day.

Powersports works well for my children. They are in the preschool program, halfdays from 9-2. They (yes, twins) will be three soon. When I pick them up at 2 they are exhausted and most days fall asleep in the car before I get them home. My girls are also learning at a steady pace even though it is summer and a tad bit more relaxed. The only other facility I have experience with is Longmire Learning Center. My oldest child went there. It is a great academic choice, but no where near the physical activity opportunities. I am sure the staff at Powersports would love another over energized three year old to join our class. Load claps for the teacher--all teachers for that matter!!

I'm curious how Montessori is too structured. I thought the basis of Montesori was more physical hands on learning at ones own pace.

There is another Montessori preschool in town, it's on South College. The name is Brazos Valley Montessori. I believe they have a facebook page.

They have outdoor play in the mornings, then they go in for group and individualized lessons, then lunch, nap, and more outdoor play.

I LOVE their outdoor space as well, they have a garden project ongoing, mature trees, swings, slide, treehouse, sandbox, heck I have a good time on their playground!

They also have a "Discovery" room that allows the kids to explore and direct their energy in positive ways, with hands on sensorial learning.

I highly recommend them, as the school has been very successful for my three children. Good luck finding something that is right for your child!

I thought the same halfpint, but the issue is that it is too much sitting still and/or playing inside over a long period of time (all morning). The current school has a small playground and it's been to hot to use it much mid day.

If your schedule will allow, you might have luck with a morning walk around the block with your child before school. It gets some of the energy burned off before they have to sit still. You can walk for 15 minutes and you tell you child to run to the blue car and then run back to you. Run to the fire hydrant and run back to you. It is fun and very effective plus it is not crazy hot at 6:30 or 7 am.

so energetic is another name for undisciplined. Great parenting skills!

I thought all toddlers are energetic and smart.

Saint Michael's Episcopal School has a very good preschool program. They spend a lot of time playing outside (in the nice shaded playground area) as well as on academics. Check out the school's website and give them a call to take a tour.
