I am moving down to college station and will living about a mile from work. I would like to bike to save money on gas, parking, etc (and it is good exercise of course).

I want to find something cheap because I fully expect it to be stolen at some point in the future anyway. I've been checking Craigslist but was wondering if anybody had any other suggestions.
Does that A&M warehouse on agronomy still do bike auctions?

The University often auctions off old, abandoned bikes.

I've got a Windsor clockwork single speed road bike if you're interested. Frame is large. Is in really good condition. You can google the name, bike was 300 bucks brand new less than a year ago. Trying to get 175

Do any of the places to buy do repairs? We're moving to CS this month and will be using the bike again I'm sure.

Aggieland Cycling is a bike shop that caters to the most basic to most advanced needs, including repairs.

I've bought from them in the past and are completely satisfied with the sale as well as service after the sell.

I second the Aggieland Cycling recommendation, I brought a couple of bikes in to have them tuned up and repaired and they did an excellent job. I know it's silly, but having the sales clerk greet me by name when I came to pick them up a couple of days after they were ready was pretty awesome, too.

Robert Rose at Cycles, Etc on University across from campus. I've bought three from him so far (over a period of 10 years) and he took a trade in (of one he sold me).

He's always been honest and had better prices than Aggieland Cycling. I also get the impression that he expects a lot from his guys...they've always been very well dressed and act very professional and independent...never did get the "I need to talk to my supervisor" line...they just did it even if it meant a loss to the store.

Bike theft is over rated. I've had one on campus for 6+ years (a $500 bike) and it was never stolen because...wait for it...I locked it up (with a substantial lock). It was parked everywhere on campus...dorms, buildings, so on...

From what I've heard from friends and associates, their bike was stolen when they didn't lock it up (or in one case, used a chain and padlock).

Well I've only had my front wheel stolen before. My bike was locked by the back, guy next to me by the front. Thief took my front tire, attached it to the frame next to mine and then rode off. It was brilliant, I couldn't be angry.

My plan is to buy an o-lock and probably a chain of some sort too. But I only look to be riding maybe two miles a day (one each way). I'm not a professional and have no intentions of doing so. So I hate to spend a lot of money on something I will only be using a little at a time...

Texasaggie04...you just gave me a eureka moment. I didn't realize why there would be one wheel chained to the bike rack but no bike as I couldn't figure out what someone would do with a bike without a wheel... Took me 12 years!

I do however get a kick out of seeing a random bike in the tree because some brilliant undergrad thought that by chaining it to itself out in the middle of no where would prevent malicious (or funny) activity.

Are these free for the taking or are you asking for money? I could use one for the girlfriend and will take anything off your hands (and piece together into a nice bike for her).

I've been a customer of Cycles, Etc for a while. I have a stable of Treks and Robert is the local Trek dealer.

Check out all the shops and decide for yourself who is most professional.
